Chicken & Waffles: A Hot Food Trend

What's The Big Deal About Chicken & Waffles?

I first encountered the concept of chicken and waffles in a book and the book was not a cookbook. Instead, it was a fictional story called Mildred Pierce written by James M. Cain and set in the 1930s.

The plot is that of a young mother whose husband walks out on her leaving her to struggle to keep their home and put food on the table for herself and two young children. She eventually finds work as a waitress and uncovers a few secrets about the restaurant business while working for a restaurant owner. Eventually she uses her strengths as a cook and her new knowledge to open her own restaurant where the only thing on the menu is chicken and waffles...

Chicken and Waffles in the Movies

You can have your chicken with waffles in movie form...

After read the book, I went on to watch both the recent Mildred Pierce HBO miniseries starring Kate Winslet and the 1945 Joan Crawford movie of the same name. Both were thoroughly enjoyable, though I caution about the sexual content of the first. This page is not meant to be a review of the Mildred Pierce book and movies though I highly recommend them and you can read my reviews of them by clicking here.

Chicken and Waffles at the Mill Street Brew Pub

Yes, that's right. I spotted chicken and waffles for the first time on the brunch menu at a the new, much talked about Ottawa, Canada restaurant Mill Street Brew Pub. Some tease me about my fondness for the Mill Street Brew pub but would you believe that, despite my fascination, I have not yet forced myself out of my breakfast frame of mind to try the chicken and waffles when it appears on their brunch menu on the weekend. Doing so is on my list of "To Dos."

More Chicken and Waffles

Including a few recipes.

Since then I've pinned a VERY interesting chicken and waffles recipe to my Pinterest board Recipes: Culinary Favorites that I would love to try. It features a very savoury recipe for fried chicken and waffle sandwiches, which you can see right here and find by clicking here.

I've picked up a February 2014 copy of a Canadian magazine called Chatelaine quite by accident and discovered a recipe for chicken and waffles within its covers. You can click right here to see if it is available on eBay. I'll say that recipe, though not executed very well on my part, was a bit of a disappointment. It attempted to be a healthier version with chicken baked in the oven. That chicken seemed closer to strips that you would feed young children. To boot, I struggled with my waffle iron and I made a mistake with the ingredients. I'll admit it was not a fair test of the recipe but I will not likely be trying it again.

And finally, I noted that chicken and waffles were on the Ottawa Citizen's list of food trends for 2014 as part of the number one trend, which is roast chicken.

Apparently, I am right on trend. I do intend to go to some restaurants and try the chicken and waffles and to try some chicken and waffle recipes right here at home so please plan on joining me on my adventure. If you have already experienced chicken with waffles, I would love to hear what you have to say!

Chicken and Waffles from Hooch Bourton House

Chicken and Waffles at Hooch Bourbon House

In Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

A friend at the gym told me about the new restaurant she took her dad to called Hooch Bourton House. Also located in Ottawa, it is drawing talk for being different and for having an interesting menu with items that are out of the ordinary, like horse. What did my friend eat? Presented with a highly unusual menu, she said she picked the safe item and, yes, you guessed it, it was chicken and waffles, which, by the way, she said were delicious.

Fast forward from a few months ago when I started writing this page to today, March 15, 2014, when I am happy to be able to report that I have finally had chicken and waffles. Hooch's version is done with fried cornish hen - one piece dark meat, one piece white meat - buttermilk waffles and a chipotle maple emulsion and they were absolutely, positively delicious. They were a bit expensive and I longed for a veggie, perhaps a stalk of asparagus or two, but I would definitely eat them again.

Sorry, I had dug in before I thought to take the picture...

Chicken and Waffle Cookbook

The one cookbook that I could find dedicated to Chicken and Waffle Recipes is this one, From Harlem to the Universe: the Top 10 Chicken and Waffle Recipes On the Planet. It's a small Kindle eBook. Note that although it is an eBook, you don't have to have a Kindle to read it because any eReader, your iPhone and even your computer will do the job for you.

Liz Evans, from Florida, says, "As a Northern transplant to the south, the idea of chicken and waffles escaped me early on. Why would you pair chicken with a breakfast staple? Turns out it was really good."

It's very inexpensive -- less than a dollar -- so go ahead and treat yourself, even if you won't be eating chicken and waffles on an every day basis. I love the fact that the first recipe uses oven-cooked rather than deep-fried chicken and hope that it would be better than my failed attempt at oven cooked chicken...

Chicken and Waffle...Potato Chips!?!

No, I'm not kidding.

Honestly, part of me was not surprised to discover that there was such a thing as chicken and waffle potato chips because I know the potato chip industry will make any flavour combination into potato chips...

I've never had grits but I expect whatever you like that add as a side dish will only improve your meal!

I'd certainly try them, especially now that I've seen the photo of your very own order and read your review, but I probably wouldn't seek out chicken and waffles. Can't quite imagine trying the potato chips, though. You've certainly done your research, Brenda. Bravo!

@Merrci: Your bacon and cabbage recipe is a bit unusual, too, Merrci though it has two of my favorite things in it! Thanks for your visit. I hope you get to try chicken and waffles & that you like them. Though judging by all the pictures I have seen online and the sad attempt at making them I made at home, I expect not all chicken and waffles are created equally.

Have to admit it sounds a bit strange, but there are a lot of strange combos out there that taste delightful. If I saw them on a menu, I'd try them! Fun and unique lens!
