Best Chocolate Bread Rolls Recipe

Mmmmm. Freshly cooked bread. It's one of my favorite smells. And chocolate is one of my favorite foods. This bread maker chocolate chip bread rolls recipe is very easy because the bread maker does all the hard work for you! Try this recipe and let me know what you think. Oh and this is a perfect recipe for hot cross buns for Easter. They make an interesting change from the traditional fruit hot cross buns.

Cook Time

Prep Time: 10 mins + 10 mins

Total Time: 3-4 hours

Serves: 16


  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups all purpose / plain flour
  • 1 cup wholewheat / wholemeal flour
  • 1/2 cup gluten flour
  • 3 Tbps cocoa powder
  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 Tbsp white sugar
  • 3 Tbsp milk powder
  • 3 tsp yeast powder
  • 1 cup choc buttons / chips


  1. Add all the ingredients except the choc chips to your bread maker pan in the order preferred by your particular bread maker.
  2. Start the bread maker on the dough cycle.
  3. After the bread machine has been mixing for about 10 minutes, add the choc chips to the pan.
  4. When the dough cycle is finished, tip the dough onto a floured surface and divide into 16 equal balls.
  5. Evenly space your 16 rolls onto a large oiled tray.
  6. Cover with a clean cloth (tea towel) and leave in a warm place for about an hour to rise.
  7. Cook in the oven at 360ºF (180ºC) for 20 minutes.

Chocolate Bread Rolls Using Bread Mix

If you like the convenience of using a bread mix, you can make it up according to the packet directions and simply add:

  • 3 Tbps cocoa powder
  • 4 Tbsp white sugar
  • 1 cup choc buttons / chips
  • (Assuming you use about 4 cups of bread mix. If you use more or less, adjust accordingly)

To split your dough into 16 reasonably equal rolls, split the dough into half, then each half into half again. Halve each section again then once more and, presto, you should have 16 pieces!

Okay. All you purest cooks close your eyes at this tip! Once when I was making these rolls, I accidentally used self-rising (self-raising) flour instead of the all purpose flour. This actually made the rolls rise even more when they were in the oven.

      When we were first married hubs and I made bread a was inexpensive and a wonderful to connect. Today we mostly make our bread in the machine and then get to creating a yummy dish together that will go with it :)

      I have a bread maker, but haven't used it in years - ate too much bread! Love hot bread with melted butter lol.. so it now lives in the cupboard!
