Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies

Updated on January 13, 2016

Gooey Butter Cookies are Delicious!

Chocolate Gooey Butter cookies are the perfect cookie for holiday desserts.  They are soft and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness.  These cookies are derived from the St. Louis famous Gooey Butter cake and are a popular cookie around the holidays in our region.

Every time I serve these cookies I get requests for the recipe.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful taste delight!

A Great Treat all Year Long

Ingredients for Gooey Butter Cookies

only six ingredients

Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies

  • 1 box (about 18 ounce) devils food cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) butter, softened
  • 4 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Christmas and Valentine Treat

I made the gooey butter cookies using a strawberry cake mix and increasing the cream cheese to 8 oz. They turned out fantastic!

Cookie Scoop - secret to perfect cookies

I had always used a teaspoon to scoop out cookies and then used my hands to shape them. That was before I discovered the luxury of using a cookie scoop. What a great little device! You can scoop out just the right amount of cookie dough and each cookie will be uniform size. It doesn't get much easier than this!

This scoop is what I use to scoop out my gooey butter cookies and I find it makes a perfect sized cookie. Using this scoop I end up with about 30 cookies from the recipe.

Directions for Cookies

easy three step directions

  • Step One

In medium size mixing bowl beat together egg, cream cheese, butter and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add cake mix and beat till it is completely mixed together.

Cover bowl and place in refrigerator for at least 1/2 hour.

  • Step Two

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and lightly spray cookie sheets.

Sprinkle powdered sugar on wax paper

Take bowl from refrigerator and drop rounded scoops of dough onto wax paper. Roll each ball in the powdered sugar and place on cookie sheet. place about 1 1/2 inches apart.

Bake for 12 minutes.

  • Step Three

Remove cookies from cookie sheets onto rack to cool. Sprinkle with remaining powdered sugar.

Red Cardinal Serving Platter - great tray for gooey butter cookies

What could be more fitting for serving a St. Louis style dessert than a beautiful platter with a red cardinal design?

This delightful platter is sure to add color to you holiday buffet!

Try Various Flavors of Cake Mix

decorate for the holidays

Gooey Butter Cookies can also be made with other flavors of cake mixes. I used a yellow cake mix and they turned out wonderful! I used a lemon cake mix and got raving results! Wonderful flavor.

To decorate for the holidays you might use the yellow or a white cake mix and divide the dough in half and add a few drops of red food coloring to half the dough and a few drops of green food coloring to the second half. These would make a nice appearance for your Christmas platter.

Another way to decorate would be to use red and green sugar to roll them in instead of powdered sugar.

However you decorate, I am sure you will love the soft, gooey flavor of the cookies!

Happy Eating!

Lemon Gooey Butter Cookies

Try these with a lemon cake mix for a wonderful taste sensation!

Have you ever tried gooey butter cookies or gooey butter cake? They are both very popular desserts in the St. Louis area!

I copied your recipe back in the winter and made these cookies. Then, just made them again yesterday for the grandkids! Yum!! My husband likes to eat them with peanut butter on top! I'm going to try the lemon cake mix next.

I can't tell you how glad I am to find this recipe. I tried a cookie-from-a-cake-mix recipe recently and it was lacking in something. I just wasn't sure what. I'm thinking your addition of cream cheese to the mix is what it needs. I'm putting this in my recipes folder to try. Thank you!

I love butter cookies but haven't tried the gooey ones. Your cookie scoop is a great tool. Many times I've put flour on my hands so the dough wouldn't stick and I really didn't want more flour added to the cookie. So the cookie scoop is perfect.
