Who is Cookie Monster?

Most people know of Cookie Monster, lovable blue furry muppet on Sesame Street. He loves cramming cookies down his face but if no cookies are available he's been known to eat anything including inedible objects such as silverware or letters.

In 1966 Cookie actually began as a character made by Jim Henson for a General Food commercial that never ended up airing. He was however later used for a training film for IBM where he ate an intricate machine. During this time he had teeth. He later appeared without teeth in a commercial for Munchos. He has since become a regular star on the show Sesame Street.

The Cookie Monster Decorating is Key

The decorating of the cupcakes is really the key here. If you prefer you can use your favorite cupcake recipe. I have supplied my favorite cupcake recipe but you can pick your favorite flavor. You can even use a boxed cake mix to keep things really simple. Just make sure that the frosting is a lighter color so that it can be died blue. Milk or dark chocolate frosting isn't going to work here but you could do a white chocolate.

  • Blue food coloring
  • Blue sprinkles
  • Bite sized chocolate chip cookies
  • White chocolate rounds or anything else that looks like googly eyes
  • Chocolate chips

  1. After the cupcakes have cooled it's time to decorate!
  2. Stir drops of food coloring into frosting until you have enough to give a bright blue color. (It will probably take at least half a bottle).
  3. Frost each cupcake; then sprinkle the blue sprinkles over the top.
  4. Cut the chocolate chip cookies in half. Stick a half piece into each cupcake where the mouth should be. It can be fun to add a couple crumbs around the sides. Have fun with it!
  5. Put two white chocolate rounds where the eyes go. Then rub a small amount of uncolored frosting onto the bottom of chocolate chips and add to the top of the eyes for the pupils. Or you can heat up a small pan and place the bottom of the chocolate chip on the hot pan for a second or two to start to melt and then press on. This will help it stick. Enjoy!

My Favorite Red Velvet Cupcakes - The cupcake recipe I use for Cookie Monster cupcakes

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetend cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup low fat milk
  • 1 ounce bottle red food coloring
  • 2 tsp real vanilla

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. 2. Mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt in medium sized bowl.
  3. 3. Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Then beat in one egg at a time. Next mix the sour cream, milk, food coloring and real vanilla. Beat in flour 1/2 cup at a time until incorporated being careful not to over beat.
  4. 4. Pour or spoon batter into 30 lined muffin cups. Each should be filled about 2/3's full.
  5. 5. Bake 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Remove cupcakes from pan and cool.

Is Cookie Monster going to become Veggie Monster?

In 2005 Sesame Street made a move to portray more healthy eating habits. This started a rumor that Cookie Monster would become Veggie Monster or else be removed from the show altogether. This was in fact false. Cookie still loves cookies however he emphasizes eating a healthy meal and then enjoying cookies for desert.

Fun Facts about Cookie

  • Cookie doesn't really "eat" cookies on set. He typically enjoys rice crackers that are designed to look like cookies.
  • Though most muppets have no fingers, Cookie Monster has 4 fingers and a thumb.
  • In an early show Cookie refers to having a brother named Fred.
  • The letter C is his favorite letter.
  • His birthday is November 2nd.
  • In a song in 2004 Cookie says that before he began eating so many cookies his real name was Sid.
