Cooking Utensils, Ideas, Recipes and Accessories

Updated on December 19, 2014

Cooking and Kitchen Renovation Ideas

Kitchens such as this are not always possible as many live in small units, rented premises or houses too small to expand on. But the contents of a kitchen are important and good utensils, cookware and accessories creates incentive to make great meals and to treat the family.

Recently my kitchen was upgraded and my old dishwasher (25 years in service) and microwave (same length of service) had to be replaced. The dishwasher sprang a leak as the men moved it around and the microwave was too heavy for me to lift or even move. It also did not fit on the shelf now provided for it. Now it is time to upgrade many of my kitchen accessories to complete the make-over.

As many women and men may be in need of an upgraded kitchen this lens is designed to offer advice, help and useful products for that purpose.

Yes they should, with adult supervision of course.

  • kimbesa 5 years ago from USA

Yes, under proper supervision, and using age-appropriate tools. I wouldn't let a four-year-old child use a chopping knife, for example. But there are things they can do, like stir some cookie dough with a big wooden spoon.

  • aquarian_insight 5 years ago

My parents instilled an interest in cooking from a young age as they are both great cooks, so I really believe every child should be given that opportunity. It's a life skill that will always come in handy.

  • BusinessSarah 5 years ago

Absolutely! I didn't learn how to cook until I moved out of messy college housing and in with my now-fiance -- I'm still sad when I think of how much time I wasted NOT cooking!

  • anonymous 5 years ago

Yes. It is important to learn this vital skill early in life.

  • kathysart 5 years ago

    Oh my goodness YES

  • Linda Pogue 5 years ago from Missouri

Absolutely. There is nothing sadder than a married couple where neither can cook. The earlier they learn, the better they cooks they will be when they are grown.

  • Petstrel LM 5 years ago

    Sure, but with supervision.

  • June Parker 5 years ago from New York

Absolutely! The sooner the better with age equivalent task. The day will come that your children are living on their own and will need these life skills. The parents that neglect to teach their children necessary life skills do their children, & society in general, a disservice.

  • Laraine Sims 5 years ago from Lake Country, B.C.

It never hurt me. I was cooking for a farm crew when I was 11 years old. Mum went out with the crew when they were short-handed. One day I was left "manning" a pressure cooker. That thing really scared me (the steam hissing out). I followed mum's instructions to the letter though, and we had a really good stew for dinner that night.

I think that if your child is a level-headed young one .. you'll be surprised what they can do to help out.

  • Odille Rault 5 years ago from Gloucester

Of course! And in fact, if you have a child who won't eat vegetables, the most effective way of getting them to eat them, is to let them cook the vegetables themselves (and even grow them as well if possible!) They won't be able to resist eating their own creation! ;)

  • KimGiancaterino 5 years ago

Yes ... cooking is a wonderful way to learn how to follow instructions. And you get a treat at the end. I did a lot of the cooking and baking at our house when I was a kid.

  • Fay Favored 5 years ago from USA

Absolutely! It works in every sense stimulating creativity.

  • Cynthia Sylvestermouse 5 years ago from United States

Absolutely! My children always helped me in the kitchen. They were learning and didn't even realize it :)

  • Carol Fisher 5 years ago from Warminster, Wiltshire, UK

Yes, they should definitely be encouraged to cook, under supervision of course.

  • Treasures By Brenda 5 years ago from Canada

Definitely, cooking is so much fun and a valuable skill.

  • Heather Burns 5 years ago from Wexford, Ireland

it's a fun activity to share

  • Nancy Tate Hellams 5 years ago from Pendleton, SC

Most definitely. Being in the kitchen can be a real education with learning Math Skills and much more.

Dads in the Kitchen

There are many great cooks among the male members of society and some handle all the cooking needs of the family. Many, however, prefer to only do bar-b-ques or outside cooking and that means different utensils and accessories.

Whatever your man does around the kitchen or outside bar-b-que you need to ensure he has the right tools and accessories to make him a happy cook and the food he prepares all the better. There are some great ways to do that and with modern cookware it is all so easy.

In this shot even the dog is enjoying himself along with dad, who is obviously in his element. Make cooking even easier with these great products:

Prepare your meals ahead of time and cook for the future. It's the modern thing to do.

Mums in the Kitchen

Of course a kitchen spells home when mum is doing the cooking. The warm smells, the aromas of special dishes, the oven bakes cooling on a tray and the unforgettable smell of hot coffee mingled with the swell aroma of cakes makes the scene of something that one always wants to come to. Think of mum and you think instantly of the marvellous meals she prepares, of the beautiful warm home she inhabits and of the fun and laughter you enjoy around the kithchen table while enjoying her offerings.

Think too of how you can make her life easier, more pleasant and rewarding. What little something would she love and treasure that comes from you to say thank you. On the other hand if you are the mum in your household than treat yourself to something you would have on hand to make your work easier and your family healthier. The following products are some of the things you might consider.

The one thing a good cook cannot do without are the herbs and spices that make a meal extra special. These wonderful indoor \herb gardens are a great innovation and allow busy mums to have what they need right at their fingertips. Whether a kitchen is tiny or large they will suit and if in a unit or upstairs they are a great asset. In any kitchen they mean availabilitiy at all times of the year, in any weather or season and always fresh.

One of the greatest things about my kitchen upgrade has to be the lights that now allow me to see better and prepare meals in a much more frienfly atmosphere. Not until they were in place did I realise how much of a stuggle it is when the light is inadequate. Now my kitchen has daylight at the end of a switch whenever I need it and everything looks so much better because of it. If you want a perfect gift for your mum's kitchen then think of lights.

Had to come back for a look. Which kitchen is yours - the intro or video? Wish my garden looked like the one on the video. The dishwasher is great. I've never seen one like that. Thanks for sharing this. Blessed indeed.

An excellent lens. For me, a kitchen really is the heart of a home, and if I ever have any kids, I'll have them mucking in with me in the kitchen.

I think where cooking and children is concerned that it is a graduated step situation. I met a young man who had burned himself badly as a child so I really don't like the idea of young children feeling too comfortable around the stove anymore. Best of wishes.

Even when my girls were 2 years old I let them help me cook. I let them crack the eggs.. yes knowing it would be a MESS and of course it was ~LOL. They are both really good cooks now though so I think a few messes were worth it. Besides they had a LOT of fun! Angel blessed lens.

Thank you so much for adding my "Kitchen and Dining in Turquoise" to your featured lens list!. You have found some unique kitchen tools, like the Volcano Grill, but I think for someone starting a new kitchen, the knife set is a must have for every new kitchen. You just can not do a good job in the kitchen without a good sharp knife. *Squid Angel Blessed* and added to My Squid Angel Blessings 2012 as the 1st lens in the "Food & Cooking Appliances, Bakeware & Utensils" neighborhood.
