The Best-Ever Creamy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

My Creamy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

The Best-Ever Creamy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe is Umm, Umm, Good! These potatoes are exactly what I think of when I think of comfort food and they are soooo delicious. My sister-in-law quite likes them and she, believe it or not, does not like scalloped potatoes! These ones are rich and it must be the presence of these extra special ingredients that makes them tasty and different to her.

I have been making these scalloped potatoes for years...since I discovered the recipe in a Parents Magazine in April of 1993. My family loves it as have all our guests to whom we have served it. My potato-loving son has always loved it. My other son, who does not love potatoes, always opted for the homemade country seed bread instead of the potatoes...until recently when he has discovered he has a taste for this delicious recipe, too.

The Best-Ever Scalloped Potatoes are a perfect accompaniment to your Easter Dinner, New Year's Dinner, Christmas Dinner or any special occasion meal. We always serve them with The Best-Ever Glazed Baked Ham. We do tend to reserve this recipe for special occasions because of its richness but there is no reason you could not prepare this recipe for creamy potatoes on a more regular basis!

What Potatoes Are Best For Scalloped Potatoes?

My Mother-in-Law always matched the correct type of potatoes the the method that she was preparing them. I have always used whatever I have on hand except, that is, for this recipe. For this recipe, I go out of my way to buy Yukon Gold potatoes. I think they are perfect for this recipe and no others will do!

Can You Make Scalloped Potatoes Ahead of Time?

I do not believe you should make this recipe ahead of time. However, on the day of your meal you could prepare the potatoes and soak them in a bowl of water and you could prepare the rest of the ingredients and store them in the fridge.

The Best-Ever Creamy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Serves 8 to 10 people

There is some preparation work in peeling and slicing the vegetables, but otherwise this is a pretty simple recipe.

1 medium onion chopped

13 oz homemade chicken broth or one can if homemade is not available

1 cup of whipping cream

1 bay leaf

1 tsp salt

1/8 tsp pepper

1/4 cup flour

6 large potatoes peeled or unpeeled (about 3 pounds)

  • Heat the oven to 325 degrees.
  • Grease a 13 by 9 inch pan.
  • Mix together the onion, broth, cream, bay leaf, flour, salt and pepper in a bowl.
  • Wash the potatoes and make sure they are somewhat dry.
  • Slice potatoes into 1/4 inch slices and arrange them in your pan.
  • Add broth mix to the potatoes.
  • Cover and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove cover, give them a little stir and bake the potatoes for 45 minutes longer.

OXO Good Grips Pro Y-Peeler
OXO Good Grips Pro Y-Peeler

Amazon customer Grace Doll is correct when she says that the $10 or so that this peeler costs is a small investment for something that is so useful. She even goes so far as to suggest that you will wonder why you waited so long to buy a GOOD potato peeler.

Oxo Good Grips Peeler

Top-rated vegetable peeler makes preparing potatoes easy.

This Amazon's bestselling vegetable peeler PLUS it has received more five-star reviews than any other vegetable peeler available on Amazon. In my opinion, that makes it a pretty darn good peeler. Featuring extra-hard stainless steel blade which will stay sharp but can even be replaced by an OXO Peeler Bade Replacement Cartridge.

Casserole Dishes For Scalloped Potatoes - Le Creuset's Rectangular Baker is so handsome and available in such fantastic colors!

Le Creuset Casserole Dishes

Le Creuset's Enameled Stoneware Covered Rectangular Baker is actually a bit bigger than the one called for in this recipe. However, I believe it still would work very nicely PLUS it comes with a lid, making covering your scalloped potatoes simple.

The Best Potato Cookbooks

Hundreds of ways to turn the potato into a meal and/or delicious side dish.

I believe that Amazon's customer reviews are a great way to judge the quality of a cookbook. I've included a quote from a customer for each of these cookbooks. If the book is out-of-print, it is probably still available through Amazon's private sellers at a used price. You can visit any of these items for more information simply by clicking on the link shown in blue, the picture or the 'buy now' button. Doing so will NOT obligate you to purchase the book.

One Amazon reviewer says that she purchased this book because she enjoys the others in the series. This book contains recipes for main courses that include potatoes including soups, stews and casseroles. She also said she loves the international flavour of these potato recipes, which include recipes from Japan, China, Ireland, French and more.

Williams Sonoma Potatoes

Amazon Customer Jennifer Thompson said that all of the recipes she has used from this cookbook were wonderful. She particularly enjoys the fact that there are pictures for every recipe.

Potato Salad: Fifty Great Recipes

An anonymous Amazon Customer said that this cookbook likely contains your mother's potato salad and much more. It goes from traditional to new style recipes. She particularly enjoys the Tarragon and Lamb Potato Salad and Jansson's Temptation and closes by saying if you love potatoes, you will love this cookbook.

Perfect Potatoes

Amazon Customer C. Carlson says that this book is great for old and new cooks and offers a great selection of recipes for everything from main dishes, to soups, sides, and baked goods. It includes vegetarian, meat and fish dishes and ethnic choices from China, Mexico, the Caribbean, Germany and more.

The Great Potato Book
The Great Potato Book

Appropriate that an Amazon Customer named Spudman would vouch for this potato book. He says that it includes a long and interesting introduction to the potato, tips for cooking and storing it along with a discussion of the types of potatoes with pictures and recipes.

One of my favorite foods, prepared one of my favorite ways, and yes, your recipe does look wonderful. These days I would have to make a vegetarian version. I wonder if that will change the flavor too much. No matter, I will pin it and give it a try next time I make scalloped spuds. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe.

Very simliar to the French pomme dauphinois which is thinly sliced potatoes layered and eac layer sprinked with finely pressed garlic and seasoned. Pour over cream, I use creme fraiche, sprinkle with nutmeg and cook in the oven until the potatoes are cooked and the top brown. Cheese is not usually added to a traditional dauphinois.

This is the first time I've seen chicken broth in a scalloped potato recipe. Going to give that a try next time I roast a chicken and render some broth. Sounds fabulous, and we do love them here. Your suggestion to use Yukon golds is helpful too, because I find they cook tender much more quickly than some of the more utilitarian potatoes. Don't you?
