What Are Chicken with Dumplings?
Chicken and dumplings is a well-liked comfort food, regularly found in the Southern and Midwestern United States.. A dumpling is a mixture of flour, shortening, and water and/or milk or stock, which is then formed into a ball or rolled out flat. Chicken and dumplings is served with a combination of boiled chicken meat, the broth produced by boiling the chicken, adding several dumplings, and salt and pepper for seasoning. In some areas, a similar (or same) meal is known as chicken and sliders.
- Large Pot (1 Gallon)
- 1 Chicken
- About 3 cups plain flour
- 1 cup water
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- Easy Chicken Dumplings Prepare Broth - Rich and Delicious!Stew a chicken until done. Drain Chicken from broth. When cool enough, remove chicken from bones. Save meat to add back after dumplings cook. Take broth about 1 gallon, add 5 chicken bouillon cubes. Salt to taste. Bring to rolling boil. Let simmer on low heat till ready for dumplings. If you need to remove from heat, just cover till ready to cook dumplings.Prepare Dumplings: Beat eggs and water. Mix dry ingredients. Combine wet and dry and mix well. Refrigerate mixture 1 hour.Work refrigerated mixture with hand. Roll out as thin as you can get it to drop into boiling broth.Cooking Dumplings: Bring broth to rolling boilWork refrigerated mixture with hand. Roll out as thin as you can amd cut into small pieces. Drop dough gently into boiling broth. Try not to touch dumpling dough pieces with each other until cooking starts. You can use a wooden spoon to carefully reposition dumplings while cooking in broth.Notes: 1. Dough should be texture similar to biscuit dough. You might need to adjust water/flour a little to get the right consistency. When Mom makes it, she makes it for large amounts, and this recipe is adjusted for a smaller amount. 2. Timing is important for great dumplings. Have as much stuff prepared ahead as you can. 3. If you want a richer brother, you might add a little butter. 4. If you want a more flavor packed dumplings, add a little butter or shortening to the dough. 5. If the cooked dumplings are going to need to sit an extended time under heat before serving, add canned milk to the warm mixture. Do not boil.
