Beans,not Just a Side Dish.

Tinned baked beans.

This is one of a series of blogs about eating baked beans.

And yes that is the kind out of a tin, it will include recipes, and maybe the odd joke about the effect of eating beans.

You can cook beans after soaking them for hours and then cooking them for nearly as long, but this recipe uses tinned baked beans in tomato sauce, this makes the job easy

By the way did you know they are still trying to perfect the windless bean!

Oh by the way, they are not baked they are STEWED

Health benefits of tinned beans in tomato sauce

We all know that beans are a good source of protein, but they are also said to reduce cholesterol. Commercial canning makes the beans easier to digest than home boiled beans too.

The american journal of clinical nutrition has done many studies on these subjects. Also the British diatetic association recommends them for fighting cholesterol, but the lower salt and sugar kind are better for you.

The beans we buy in tomato sauce are usually, Navy beans also known as Haricot beans. Originally from North America, they were first sold in England at Fortnum and Masons as an exotic import in 1886.

Now there are many brands including supermarket own and they come with different flavours and added ingredients like sausage or burger.

Don't forget the tomato sauce is full of lycopene also good for you!

A recipe for Cheesy bean loaf

I have made this a few times in the past, every one has heard of beans and cheese with a jacket potatoe, and served hot that is sort of all it is, but served cold it makes a change from meat loaf with salad.

Get yourself a nice packet of Sage and onion stuffing, 8 oz or 227 grams. Make it up with 8oz, 225ml of boiling water.

Mix it into a 15oz,450g can of beans in tomato sauce.

Add one beaten egg and 2 tablespoons of cream or top of the milk.

At this point a small amount of chopped nuts can be added,30z,75g.

My family have decided they don't really like nuts in food. And If my son eats too many it makes him really ill, something to think about if sharing with others!

Put the mixture in a greased loaf tin and smoothing the top cover with tin foil.

Bake for 45 minutes at gas mark 5,375* F or190*C.

It may not be easy but turn the loaf out! Cover in grated cheese and tomato slices, Put back in oven for about 8 minutes.

Why beans make you bottom burp

Everyone knows beans are notorious for causing gas, wind or whatever you want to call it.

Legumes of all kinds have a sugar called oligosacharide, this cannot be absorbed in the small intestine, as other sugars are, and passes through into the large intestine broken down and ready to cause problems.

Thanks moonlake, to be honest I have not got the patience to cook any beans from scratch but use all kind of canned ones. Now my husband loves to cook, so I leave him to do the hard stuff LOL

excellent stuff, especially the fart catcher.

I make my own, tin of Haticot beans in water, rinse, cook with garlic, chillies, tomato puree and in enough water to keep moist but thick.
