Five Best Pizza Toppings

Updated on June 13, 2011

Favorite Pizza Toppings

1. Cheese

Admittedly, just about every pizza under the sun contains cheese. But a little extra never hurts, especially when you try adding different cheeses on to your pieces, like gorgonzola, bleu cheese, brie, gouda or cheddar. If you want to go with something a little more traditionally Italian, buy a large ball of mozzarella and cut off numerous thick slices. Add that to your pizza before popping it in the oven and you’ll get pockets of gooey mozzarella all over your pizza. Another great option with cheese is shredded or grated parmesan, which always adds a little kick of flavor and melts perfectly on top of a piping hot pizza. Because there are so many different flavor and texture options with cheese, it can be one of the most fun and delicious topping options for any pizza.

2. Pepperoni

Here in America, we’re all too familiar with this tasty, zesty pizza topping. It’s right behind cheese as the most popular pizza topping in the U.S. It’s the kind of topping that can be enjoyed by kids and parents alike. Many people are known to buy extra pepperoni slices to add to their frozen or delivery pizzas because they find themselves wanting more. If you love pepperoni on your pizzas, considering trying pepperoni chunks as opposed to slices. Not all pizza joints offer the chunks but if you can find them they are worth trying. It has all the same great flavors with a little more texture and meatiness. Either way, pepperonis are one of the greatest toppings you can choose to compliment a pizza.

3. Sausage

Because it has a tangy, spicy flavor, sausage is a great compliment to both the cheese and the tomato sauce found on most pizzas. Like pepperoni, sausage is one pizza topping you’re sure to find on just about every pizza menu in the U.S. It comes in different forms, too. Although a spicy Italian sausage is usually the norm, there are also plenty of pizza places that offer a sweeter sausage option as well. The better Italian sausages are often made in house. This chunky topping is especially delicious when it is cooked under the cheese instead of on top of it.

4. Ham

When it comes to pizza, we definitely like our meats. Along with pepperoni and sausage, ham is another great option when it comes to topping off a pizza. Because it is packed with so much flavor and has a wonderful texture, it’s perfect making any pizza that much more delicious. On some menus, Canadian bacon is offered instead of ham, but the tasty results are always the same.

5. Olives

They may not be one of the most popular options available, but olives are certainly one of the most delicious pizza toppings out there. Those who try it are usually hooked because of the delicate way that the olive taste brings out the cheese and tomato flavor in the pizza. Although black olives tend to be more common when it comes to topping a pizza, green olives are just as tasty.

Great Hub. I like a pizza with sausage, mushroom, green pepper, onion, and cheese. Many of the pizza places here in Springfield offer a specialty pizza with those toppings.
