Food On A Stick

Updated on December 30, 2010

The Minnesota State Fair

The Great Minnesota Get-Together has become famous World wide for it's dazzling display of Food on a Stick. This year the Minnesota State Fair will proudly boast that there are 78 different places where you can indulge on your favorite foods on sticks.

In 2009 Minnesota State fair-goers can dine on everything from Aligator on a stick to watermelon on a stick and everything in between.

Minnesota State Fair On A Stick

Pronto Pups Versus Corn Dogs

The Pronto Pup was invented by George and Versa Boyington in the late 1930s for their hotdog stand on Rockaway Beach, on the northern Oregon coast.

Pronto Pups are suposedly different than corn dogs because the batter contains different ingredients. At the Minnesota State Fair we have Corn Dogs, Poncho Dogs, Pronto Pups and Super Dogs, which are all different versions of hot dogs dipped in batter and then deep fried.

The Great Corn Dog Debate

What do you think? Is there really a taste difference between Pronto Pups, Corn Dogs or whatever different names they have for deep fried hot dogs on sticks?

Can you taste the difference?

Weirdest Food On A Stick

Each year people try to come up with the most unusual food on a stick at Fairs all over America. My favorite is still the Pronto Pup, my hubby just loves the deep fried Twinkies on a stick.

At the Minnesota State Fair you can find Pizza on a stick...which is actually a Calzone on a stick, Waleye on a stick, Catfish on a stick, Pork Chops on sticks, pickles on-a-stick, Italian style chicken on-a-stick, olives on-a-stick, chocolate covered cheesecake on-a-stick, ice cream on-a-stick, spaghetti and meatballs on-a-stick, salmon on-a-stick, hot dago on-a-stick, baby potatoes on-a-stick, even Caprese salad on-a-stick

Puff Daddy on-a-stick which is a sausage wrapped in dough.

Scotch Eggs on-a-stick (hard boiled egg, wrapped in sausage, rolled in bread crumbs and deep fried)

Tornado Potato, a potato spiral-cut on-a-stick!

Texas Steak Dinner on-a-stick (cubed steak, potatoes, onion, peppers and a dinner roll)

S'mores on-a-stick (toasted marshmallows in chocolate topped with graham cracker crumbs),

Pickle Dog and fire Dog (quarter dill or jalepeno pickle, coated with cream cheese and wrapped in pastrami)

Porcupine meatballs on-a-stick (wild rice and ground pork)

Foot Long Desert Pizza on-a-stick (pizza dough, sweet cream cheese, cinnamon, sugar)

Grilled shrimp on-a-stick with butter garlic seasonings or cajun seasonings

Kufta kabobs on-a-stick, lamb/beef kabobs on-a-stick, or even stuffed grape leaves on-a-stick.

Frozen key lime pie dipped in chocolate on-a-stick

Leg of lamb (marinated on-a-stick)

Fiddlestix (premium vanilla ice cream, hand sliced, skewered on-a-stick, dipped in chocolate and rolled in chopped nuts)

Corned beef and cabbage dipped in batter on-a-stick

Tater tot hot dish on-a-stick with cream of mushroom dipping sauce

Batter dipped, deep fried candy bars on-a-stick (Snickers, Milky Way, Three Musketeers, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups)

Peach Glazed Pork Cheeks marinated in garlic, herbs, spices and honey, then grilled and served two on-a-stick with peach chipotle glaze!

Fudge puppies (a Belgium waffle on-a-stick dipped in swiss chocolate) topped with choices of whipped topping, crunch coating or strawberries

Well...the list just goes on and on, but you get the idea...are you hungry yet?

Love the Minnesota State Fair; it's amazing the things you find on a stick there. I thought "Hot Dish" on a stick sounded like one of the strangest. And one of my favorites is "Cheese on a Stick" ... or maybe just fried cheese curds; those are good too.

Catfish on a stick would do me, followed by Scotch Egg on a stick. The sticks can be used for decorating behind the couch

My cousin would go back to Minnesota every year and always take in the state Fair. I was jealous. But the time I went back to MN I found walleye's on a stick! Hmmm. Love it.

Well I've spent countless hours at the Minnesota state fair over the last 40 years...mostly on machinery hill with my crazy farmer Dad when I was a kid. However, the most memorable moments at the fair are about the food....I love cheese curds and cheesecake on a stick. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. Congrats on your 2009 Giant Squid nomination and best of luck to you.

Maybe I'll go on the "Food on a Stick" diet. Think I'd lose anything? Seriously, though--really--I once tried a corn dog NOT on a stick, and it just wasn't the same. Something was missing ... like, biting down on wood. You just gotta have that. There's something about picking bits of pine (or whatever it is) off your tongue that's so special. :)

I have got to hand it to you and say because it's on a stick it adds to the novelty and therefore it tastes nicer. Just dropped by to say congratulations on a bit of the old purple.
