I'm new to the sushi world, but I love it.
Big shockers for me were the eel (unagi?) and caviar. They are delicious.
Since I'm new to it all, tell me what you thought would be NAS-TEH, but wound up being one of your favorites!
I never really tried too much sushi although I LOVE caviar and raw salmon. I could eat them all day.
Oysters are pretty awesome too.
I never thought I would eat caviar, but I love the little bitty ones that are different colors. The spicy red ones are amazing added! I love salmon so I thought it would be my favorite in sushi, but it's the raw tuna that I favorite in sushi.
Taco, aka octopus is pretty good. My favorite of all time is the spider rolls. Fried soft shell crabs rolled whole with the legs coming out. Great stuff! My gram is Japanese, so I've never thought sushi to be unappealing.
Lucky you! It's just not a common food where I'm from. I love the spider rolls as well.
I think the biggest surprises for me were the textures of the fish. It's creamy. I thought it would be tough and chewy uncooked. I love the salmon.
My favorite roll right now is something called "tiger eye". It's cream cheese, salmon, jalapeno peppers in a rice roll (I think) They all go very well together.
By His Way: Nice to see you tried something new and loved it. If you like Nigiri (just the rice and fish; not a roll), see if your local sushi place has "Toro" and try that. It's the fatty belly part of a blue fin tuna and is just delicious.
I would also recommend scallops (Nigiri is great, but rolls are also fine) and something with salmon skin, like a salmon skin hand roll.
I never thought anything would be nasty, but Toro, Salmon and Scallops are my favorites, which is why I mentioned them.
"Toro"...ok, I'll ask for that next time which may be this weekend. I have to drive an hour to get to this one really small sushi place, but it's worth it. It's one woman and there are maybe 15 seats. At night she uses candles around the bar (where she makes everything for us to see) to light the room. It's as amazing as her food. I've heard people say who have traveled alot say that she really makes some of the best sushi. Anyways, I went on a bragging spree there.
That salmon skin hand roll sounds interesting. Hmm...
Oh, and I haven't had the scallops. I'm leary of them, but it seems to be a favorite of most replying. I'll keep it in mind.
Back when I wasn't a vegetarian I found that the taste of calamari was surprisingly delicious. However, I only liked it the way my uncle made it.
Yeah, see my experience with that hasn't been good.
I love every form of sushi except mackerel. It took me a little while to get up my nerve to try scallops, but they're as yummy as the rest, as long as you're in a good sushi bar.
My only concern now is trying to stick to the more sustainable fish. i eat so much sushi since I moved to California that it's the main part of my diet!
Love the comment on sustainable, Greekgeek! - so important!
Funnily enough, scallops represent one of my earliest literal experiences of sushi. Growing up close to the West Coast of Scotland and being brought up on a fisherman and hunter's diet, I loved their sweet and succulent flavour. Mackerel are one of our most popular caught fish but I don't remember ever trying them raw (I may be wrong!) Thanks for the idea - I'll definitely try it this summer.
I've been lucky enough to try sushi in many countries but unfortunately never yet Japan. I think my best experience was - strangely enough - in Spain. A group of friends and I found this wonderful sushi bar in a small town I can't remember the name of where the staff spoke no English, or even Spanish! It was go with the flow or do without. I was disappointed in that only one of my friends trusted me enough to try the delights on offer. Believe it or not, the others turned their noses up and went hungry! Their loss... It was delicious, even though I am not entirely sure what I ate.
I would definitely recommend sushi to anyone, provided you do know what you're eating or visit a trusted restaurant.
I wish! it were THAT available here! I know of two sushi places within 2 -3 hour radius in any direction. You're so lucky! I really wish I could make it our daily menu. It's so satisfying on very little and healthy!
I don't know about other places, but it's expensive here. It's easily 30.00 just by myself. I took my kids (2) to go with me the last time and it was a little over 80.00 (three rolls, rice, chicken, drinks)
(Well....that's "expensive" for podunk girl. )
What are your average sushi prices?
Sashimi over sushi for me. Being of Filipino descent, I'm no stranger to eating fresh, raw fish with a bowl of rice on the side. At this point, I'm burned out on sushi because it's not new to me. In fact, I'm bored with it unless it's made with something more exotic (and expensive).
I have the same mentality toward Mexican food. Hamburgers are an actual treat sometimes.
One of my favorite dishes is only something I've had that was homemade by a coworker. I've never seen it anywhere else or even know the name, but it is OUTstanding. Maybe you know what it was since my coworker was Filipino. It was really thin rice noodles, sliced shrimp (not much), green onion, and what she called "fish balls" that were these little spongy pieces of "meat"? It was served with lime.
Oh, wow, now you're talking, Jesus was a hippy! Caviar, smoked salmon, smoked sturgeon, and oysters (right off the grill with lemon and Tabasco). You are making me hungry! If caviar and smoked salmon is offered on a cruise, I'm not leaving the ship until I get my fill. There is nothing better than smoked salmon and capers for breakfast!

What makes a fish sushi grade?I've been grilling a lot of fish lately and serving it pink. I'm wondering if I should be cooking sushi grade salmon since it is pretty pink. What makes a salmon fit for sushi?

It occured to me the other day that I have a shocking gap in my knowledge. What is it? Apart from a few film themes, I couldn't name a single piece of music composed in the 21st century !!! Not even one! Although I could name a few celebrity pop stars like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Beyonce, I...
