Belgian Waffles, A Family Celebration

Updated on February 5, 2015

Celebrate Waffle Iron Day or Any Day with Our Favorite Family Waffle Recipe

One of my family's favorite breakfast meals is Belgian Waffles and Waffle Iron Day on June 29 is a perfect reason to enjoy this delicious breakfast.

Waffles, a tasty, aromatic treat has become a tradition for our family and one our kids ask for when they return home for a visit. It was the breakfast our daughter wanted on her wedding day. So, our daughter and girlfriends in her wedding party, gathered 'round our breakfast table to begin one of the most memorable days in her life.

This breakfast began our daughter's wedding day and has also begun numerous other extra special and noteworthy milestone days for our family--which conveys precisely just how much these tasty pastries have etched out their place in our family's traditions. For our own special family signature, we add an ingredient that makes them smell and taste extraordinary ...I will share that ...

Do You Have a Waffle Iron? - June 29 is the Day You Need One .

If you don't have a waffle iron, Waffle Iron Day creates a good reason to buy yourself a fancy one like these.

Our waffle maker is plain ... doesn't turn ... or even cook two waffles at a time. After finding these new and improved models, I may need to update my appliances. It would be very convenient when you have a hungry family waiting, to have a waffle maker that produces two at a time.

Waring WMK600 Double Belgian Waffle Maker

This is like one of my waffle makers--only better since it cooks 2 at a time. It's a great idea and is now on my wish list! It makes a real Belgian waffle.

I like the belgian waffles that are thicker and more cake-like. And a waffle maker that cooks two at once is a bonus!

This waffle iron is like mine; our daughter especially likes the heart-shaped waffles. It makes a thinner, crispier waffle.

It's more like making a regular waffle from a Belgian waffle recipe.

The Best Tools for the Job - A KitchenAid Epicurean Mixer

When my husband bought me this mixer for Christmas one year, I soon realized it was one of the best gifts I ever got. It makes doing so many things in the kitchen simple--even making marshmallows! But it is extremely useful for making the family favorite--Belgian Waffles.

There are many models available; this one is like mine--but mine is cobalt blue. I enjoyed my mixer so much that I got my daughter a pink one when she got married. And I got my daughter-in-law a silver one when she and my oldest son were married. Both use their KitchenAid mixers frequently.

And now THE RECIPE

BELGIAN WAFFLES

4 eggs, separated

1 cup milk

1/4 cup butter, melted

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups flour

1 Tablespoon sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 Tablespoon vanilla--(this is our special ingredient because the kind we use is Mexico vanilla which adds a unique touch)

Beat egg yolks and sugar in bowl until light. Add cooled melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Add flour, baking powder & salt, beat well. Beat egg whites until stiff and gently fold into batter. Bake & serve.

Serving that Special Breakfast

A beautiful serving plate would add the perfect touch.

We often use our Lenox China in the gold Eternal pattern. When my husband and I owned our McDonald's Restaurants, the McDonald's Corporation gave us our set of China for 20 years of service with McDonald's. The dishes are beautiful and add a special touch to any occasion or meal--even breakfast waffles.

The Family Favorite Version

A faster version, modified by my husband

Quicker ... and probably better ... Waffles

4 eggs

1 cup milk

1 Tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups flour

6 Tablespoons butter, melted

1 Tablespoon Mexico vanilla

Beat eggs & sugar until light & foamy. Add cooled melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Sift flour & baking powder and add to egg mixture. Add salt & beat well. Bake & serve with fruit & powdered sugar, or butter & syrup, or honey, or ... whatever your favorite may be ... ice cream ???

Wonderful lens! We just love waffles especially for dinner, with fresh strawberries on top from the garden. We have put ice cream on them too! The Mexican vanilla sounds great. I'll give it a try.

Looking forward to waffle day. Belgian waffles especially with ice cream and powdered sugar like we used to get in Alantic City, NJ.

Belgian waffles are the ultimate luxury breakfast. I remember smiling inside whenever I noticed Mom had taken out the waffle iron that Dad had gotten her for breakfast, it did its job for 30 years before taking a rest.
