Gold Food: The New Edible Gold Craze

Edible gold is the latest trend in haute cuisine. You can't take it with you but you can eat it.

Eating gold has its roots in ancient Roman history and it has been reborn as the newest food and drink trend of the rich and famous. Innovative chefs are serving it up - adding it to champagne, caviar, chocolate and more. You can even find edible gold flakes on bagels and on sushi. The poor are protesting it, the rich are eating it, and the advertising companies are lapping it up.

Is Gold Food Safe to Eat?

Can it be digested?

Gold Food is actually safe to eat. Because edible gold does not contain harmful byproducts, it is easily digested and leaves the system within 24 hours. It has no calories, and edible gold does not alter the taste of the food or its nutritional value.

Gold Food aka "edible gold" is made of pure 24 karat gold or mixed with silver.

In 2006 this chocolate bar made history. Since that time, others have surpased it.

In 2009, Wispa of London created a special edition chocolate bar priced at £961.48.The company said that the price was the precise value of its weight in gold. That year Wispa brand manager Ross Farquhar said: "We believe this is the most expensive bar of chocolate to go on sale ever."

In 2007, New York restaurateur Steven Bruce of Serenity3 teamed up with luxury jeweler Euphoria New York to make an amazing dessert. They created the most expensive dessert at that time - a $25,000 ice cream sundae - and set a Guinness world record. The dessert is infused with 5 grams (0.2 ounces) of edible gold in a goblet of edible gold, and eaten with a gold spoon. To top things off, there is an 18 karat gold bracelet with diamonds on the bottom of the ice cream sundae. The bracelet is not digestible.

The first $25,000 sundae was eaten by a 12 year old boy celebrating his birthday at Serendipity3 of New York. The first $34,440 chocolate, caviar, gold and diamond dessert was eaten by a Mr. Carl Weininger from Rugby, UK in celebration of his 60th birthday at the Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere. Mr. Weininger is disabled and has arranged for the dessert to be on display for a charity ball aimed at benefiting the disabled.

On January 13, 2012, the Golden Globe nominees were served a dessert covered with flakes of edible gold which retail for $135 a gram. This was served to 1,300 guests dining at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

In Russia, the wealthy like to eat gold with their caviar. The latest rage in Korea is edible gold peanuts, which are said to have anti-aging and IQ boosting properties.

A recent trend in the US has seen the inclusion of floating bits of gold leaf in liquors. However, liquors with such bits of gold leaf have been available in in Continental Europe since the late 16th century.

In an article written by Bradley Hope for "The National," he said that the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, AE served 11 pounds of edible gold to its dinner guests. Its rose champagne with edible gold is popular at $3,000 a bottle.

Wikipedia says, "In Asian countries, gold in particular is sometimes used in fruit jelly snacks. It was also used in coffee, especially during Japan's bubble economy. In Kanazawa, where Japan's gold leaf production was centered, gold leaf shops and workshops sold green tea and hard candy with gold leaf within."

In reaction to the lavish dessert with gold recently served to the Golden Globe nominees in Beverly Hills, Joel Berg of the Coalition Against Hunger in New York spoke out about the irony of a society that makes it "extraordinarily difficult" for the poor to receive food benefits from the government and yet feeds its movie stars and their guests extravagant food. UK's newspaper "The Guardian" carried the headline "Golden Globe celebrities enjoy meal of real gold as poverty tightens grip on US."

At the the Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere, UK, you'll find a new chocolate dessert laced with gold leaves, champagne, caviar, and topped with a two karat diamond for $34,440. This is the creation of Head Chef Marc Guilbert.

When Mr. Carl Weininger of the UK was questioned about why he ordered the $34,440 gold dessert for his 60th birthday, he made the following statement:

"I am an impulsive kind of person and when I heard about the dessert on TV, it trapped in my brain. Getting the dessert has been an actual improve for my morale and it is assisted to market the charity Aerobility which provides disabled grown ups like me and children the opportunity to consider to the skies and fly".

The Head Chef at the Emirates Palace, Jean Pierre Garat, states that gold in food is a sign of excellence. My translation: In this case, the innovative chef makes a name for himself and and sets a new Guinness world record in the process. The customers buy into it and the media laps it up. All in all, it is good for business.

In the late 1870s, alcohol with gold leaves was consumed to give the appearance of great wealth. It is no different today.

Most people will eat and drink gold to show they can afford it. And if their fortunes crash, the chefs will surely come up with something equally innovative. Robert Frank of the "Wall Street Journal" suggested in 2009 that the replacement could be "finely layered sheets of 401K statements."

The current estimated price per pound of gold is $15,000 US, but you can buy 100 mg of edible gold for only $40.

What Forms Does Edible Gold Come In?

Edible gold comes in many forms. A one gram jar of 23k edible gold flakes can be purchased on Amazon for $142, and a small shaker of 23k edible gold flakes weighing 100 mg can currently be purchased on Amazon for only $38.

Edible gold leaf can also be purchased in fragile 23k foil sheets. These start at $40 or $50 and go up in price from there. You can purchase gold petals for about $50. These are small pieces of gold leaf and are applied by tweezers.

There is also an assortment of edible gold sprays for under $15 which contain a small amount of gold dust, as well as edible gold glitters, which contain very light flakes of gold that are sprinkled on desserts for a dramatic effect. Because edible gold is a precious metal, it is used sparingly.

The Fabergé Egg Hunt coming up in London this April will showcase the most expensive Easter egg in the world. It is part of a fundraiser for two important causes: 1) Action for Children and 2) to save the endangered Asian elephant. The Easter egg is a chocolate concoction created by world famous chocolatier William Curley, and is also a Fabergé creation, complete with a 121k emerald.

A Little About Myself

I'm an artist & art educator & I share my life with a wonderful husband and two very special Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. I haven't eaten gold food yet, but I am thinking about getting some edible gold paint to lightly brush on some chocolate roses I made. No, I wouldn't spend thousands on eating a dessert or any other food or drink with gold. That's ridiculous. It's fun to write about though.

      Fascinating! I'd never heard about this trend. Guess I've been living in the woods too long. I have to confess that if someone gave me a gold treat, I'd be tempted to cash it in rather than eat it! But I suppose that would spoil the fun. Very nicely written and designed lens!
