Kitchen Gadgets for Your Favorite Chef

Updated on July 31, 2013

Gift Guide for People Who Love to Cook

This gift guide provides great ideas about what to get your favorite cook.

I believe a kitchen with great cooking utensils is a lot like a fisherman's tackle box. You need the right lures to land the best catch. As much as I love great cooking, it is an art...a craft incorporating patience, dexterity, creativity and superior senses of smell and taste. Alas, I possess average abilities, but have always had a fascination with gadgets. Cooking gadgets, diy gadgets, tech gadgets...you name it, and I am just a gadget freak.

My better half frequently jokes he was attracted to me because I have all the best gadgets. When it came to my kitchen, he couldn't wait to prepare a meal just to have a chance to experiment with all the gadgets. Like a kid in a candy store, he set about playing with all the kitchen toys. That was eight years ago, and I still come home with new and interesting gadgets.

Some have been successful additions to the kitchen, and some have been abandoned to the back of drawers and cabinets. Some of the most successful and useful gadgets are also some of the most basic.

Here are some of my chef's favorites.

Spark Your Favorite Chef's Creativity

Put the Cooking Tools to Work
Put the Cooking Tools to Work

I believe many of the most memorable meals don't come from a picture or a recipe book, but from my guy thinking, "hmmm what can I make using this?" as he holds a new gadget in his hand. I truly believe he is incapable of following a recipe as I rarely see him use one. Yes, we are both avid watchers of cooking shows, and I read many cooking articles. However, when my man cooks he brings out ingredients we have on hand and cooking equipment. Then the culinary magic begins.

KitchenAid Mixer, A Real Work Horse - For every sale from Amazon on this page, Squidoo donates $1 to Room to Read

Every Kitchen Needs a Great Mixer (p.s. Check out the attachments too!)

KitchenAid KP26M1XNP 6 Qt. Professional 600 Series Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer - Nickel Pearl
KitchenAid KP26M1XNP 6 Qt. Professional 600 Series Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer - Nickel Pearl

This great mixer is put to regular use in our kitchen. It's selection of attachments have been used to make everything from my favorite artichoke and spinach dip to the best pear bread this side of the Mississippi. It is sturdy, reliable and has a powerful motor so it doesn't bog down when mixing heavier batters.

Perfect for the Smaller Jobs - Mixes and Chops

The KitchenAid is the true warrior in the kitchen, but for quick jobs this hand mixer is nifty. It also includes a whisk attachment and chopper attachment, so it is a great little multi-tasker in the kitchen. We use it for preparing the ingredients for our salsa...a real time saver. This is my absolute favorite gadget in the kitchen! It is easier to move, handle and use than either a food processor or a mixer, but usually does the tasks of both!

Appreciate the Simple Things in Life - Simple, Yet Great Salt and Pepper Grinders

These kitchen utensils can be easily overlooked. In the average kitchen they may be viewed as a luxury. However, someone who loves to cook is lost without them...salt and pepper grinders. The OXO grinders are great additions to any kitchen. The clear body allows you to see how much salt or pepper you are adding (we use different type of salt and pepper for different recipes), you can adjust between fine and coarse grinds, and they are easy to fill.

Add Spice to Your Life - What's Christmas without Nutmeg and Cinnamon

I don't think our grinder/zester sees a drawer much during the year. We use this to grind nutmeg, cinnamon, and create the zest used in any number of great recipes. When a food processor or grater is a little much, this handy tool saves the day. When you're finished, just put it in the dishwasher and it is that easy.

These Items Work Overtime in the Kitchen

Don't forget the stocking stuffers...

Let me know what you have found to be the most useful gadgets in your kitchen. We always like to try new things in our kitchen. Please share your great finds with other readers.

Love to Hear About Your Favorite Gadgets - Happy holidays!

There's little in life that excites me like a shiny new kitchen gadget (and we already have a wall taken over by kitchen stuff in the garage... shameless, I am!)

Nice! (Except I'm the type of guy who opens the can, eats the stuff, washes the spoon, recycles the can, and I'm done. *grin*) Congrats on a Squidoo masterpiece!
