Heavenly Guacamole Hummus

Updated on June 15, 2014

Protein-Rich Guacamole Spread

If you have ever been to a sub shop where they use a guacamole spread on their veggie sub, you know that it's delicious. However, if you're like me, you also can't help but wonder what's in the spread besides avocado. Is there any other nutritional content?

I love the guacamole spreads on these sandwiches, and recently, I set my mind to finding a healthier way to have this delectable treat. Guaco-Hummus is a great way to get the creamy flavor and texture of guacamole with the added protein value of garbanzo beans. A few other ingredients warm it up and make it the perfect homemade, healthy sub spread, for half the cost of a sandwich in a sub shop.

Keep reading to try my recipe. All photos on this page are my own.

I love hummus! And I will go to any lengths to get my hands on the guacamole that my husband makes me as a special treat every now and again. When I got to thinking about the guac spreads in sub shops, I thought blending two favorites might be a good way to create this healthy and delicious recipe.

The best part is that there's a lot of wiggle room to tweak this recipe to your own specific tastes.

  • Prep time: 15 min
  • Cook time: 5 min
  • Ready in: 20 min

  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 jalapeno (optional)

  1. Clean and prepare garlic clove, green onions, and cilantro.
  2. Rinse garbanzo beans.

  4. Add all ingredients to a food processor, and puree for 3-5 minutes until desired texture.
  5. Enjoy!

Pinned and will give this a try. My youngest dd hates mayo and this might be a great alternative for her. I feel bad that she skips a ton of sandwiches because of the mayo. Thanks for sharing on Merry Monday.

I can't wait to try this recipe! Not a jalapeno fan, guess I'll just add more garlic. This sounds like a healthy addition to any sandwich.

This sounds like a great nutritious improvement on regular hummus or regular guacamole - absolutely, yes, I'll be trying this recipe! Thanks for the tip on leaving the pit in the bowl to keep it green, too. I'd never heard that before.

I may not be building a sub sandwich, but I'm definitely going to try your guacamole hummus recipe. I imagine it would be delightful in a wrap or tortilla. Thank you for sharing it. Stephanie shared it on a recent article about GoodVeg Magazine, which is how I found it, and I can see why she picked your recipe.
