Half Cup of Coffee

Updated on October 28, 2014

You Asked for It -- Half Cup Coffee Mug

Maybe you've seen these cups in an antique store or you made the mistake of asking for "just a half a cup of coffee" and were served your coffee in one of these half cups.

I have a collection of half cups. If you can call two of them a collection, that is.

This half cup pictured here was on display my entire life in our kitchen. Dad delighted when he asked a guest if they wanted some coffee and they'd say "Okay, but just half a cup." He'd smile and trot over to retrieve this cup and fill it to the brim and set it in front of the person with the words facing them.

Collecting Vintage Half a Cup of Coffee Cups

With a little digging, you can find these fun vintage half cups. There are several on eBay and Etsy for sale if you're interested in starting your own half cup collection.

I've also seen these half cups in thrift stores and antique stores, but not very often. They're just that special!

Make a mental note (or a real written one!) to keep an eye out for these half cups, and soon you'll have your very own half cup.

Half Cup Photos - My favorite half cup measuring cup

Half Cup Measuring Cup
Half Cup Measuring Cup

I have two glass measuring cups. One is a fun slanted looking OXO measuring cup, which I use for things that I need to measure full cups or 3/4 of a cup of 2/3 of a cup. But for ingredients that are half cup, I tend to use my cute little vintage half cup measure. It is metal and has a great patina (it's well aged, let's just say that).

This photo is my half cup measuring cup empty.

Half Cup Photos - The Proverbial (Half) Cup of Sugar

Cookbooks say you should use a measuring cup like this for dry ingredients and run a knife across the top to make it level. I rarely go to that much trouble. I'm a lazy cook. But doesn't this heaping half cup of sugar look delicious!?

Half Cup Photos - Half cup of coffee?

Half Cup of Coffee
Half Cup of Coffee

This is a half cup of pure coffee, not a half cup of drinkable coffee. I actually use this 1/2 cup's sister, the 1/4 cup to measure the coffee I make each morning.

Coffee AM? Coffee PM? - When do you drink coffee?

I find it fascinating when I hear about people who drink coffee in the evening then actually go to bed and sleep. As much as I love coffee, it keeps me awake. Let me know what effect coffee has on you, and take this just for fun poll.

When do you drink coffee? And I'm talking about the leaded stuff.

Fun lens especially for us coffee lovers! I liked your polls, usually I find the polls don't have enough choices and mine isn't there, but you made some more interesting choices!!

I have a couple of half cup coffee mugs. When we ask someone if they want coffee and they say just a half a cup, we pull out the mugs.

I would imagine that these special coffee mugs bring a smile to the face of all who are served a half measure. Of course, being a coffee-holic, I would never think to ask for just a half a cup of coffee. :-) These mugs would be fun to collect.

I do not own a literal "half-cup" mug, but when I was growing up in the 60's it seemed everybody we visited had one or two. My folks had a couple of over sized mugs with that "Maw Come Git Yur Coffee" image - one said Maw, the other said Paw.

I enjoyed this lens very much - it brought back good memories, and I had just a teensy bit of half-cup envy looking at your half cup measure. I love kitchen tools, especially well used ones that you just know by looking carries a story of a person, or an event. Well done - totally deserving the the purple star.

Love the half cup. The joke at our house growing up was when you asked for half a glass it was invariably filled fuller. When you said you only asked for half a glass the reply would be, "If it was a bigger glass it would be half full."

Ha! That is hilarious! I have never seen one of these, but my dearly departed cousin used to always ask for only 1/2 a cup of coffee at a time when we went out to eat at our favorite restaurant. She didn't like how coffee got cold when it sat there. If she only had 1/2 a cup per fill, it stayed hot till the next time. Thanks for reminding me of her. : )
