Boiled and Roast Ham Sandwich Recipes
Ham sandwiches - like any sandwiches - can be as simple or as adventurous as you wish them to be. They are great for taking to school or work as packed lunches, perfect as quick, simple and satisfying snacks, or can even be served in a more substantial form with a starch accompaniment such as homemade fries or chips as a main meal. Ham sandwiches can be made with leftover ham, cold cuts of ham or even ham specifically cooked for making sandwiches. This page will look at a number of creative suggestions for making ham sandwiches, as well as an easy way to poach and roast rolled pieces of supermarket ham to delicious perfection for the express purpose of making sandwiches.
How to Boil a Piece of Rolled Ham
Cook Time
Ingredients
- 2 pound piece boneless, rolled unsmoked ham
- 1 green bell pepper, seeded and roughly chopped
- 2 medium carrots, topped, tailed, washed and roughly chopped
- 1 medium white onion, peeled and quartered
- 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions

- Use a large jug to pour in enough cold water to completely cover the ham. Put the heat on to high until the water just starts to boil.
- When the water has reached boiling point, reduce the heat to achieve a simmer and put the lid on the pot. Continue to simmer for one hour, checking occasionally to make sure the ham is still completely covered. If necessary, add a little more boiling water.
- Use a large carving fork to carefully lift the ham from the poaching liquid to a large, deep plate. Cover and leave to rest and cool for fifteen minutes before carving.
