Healthy Breakfast Smoothies For Weight Management

Updated on March 28, 2015

Get your day started off on the right foot with one of these Healthy Breakfast Smoothies.

Note: Thank you for visiting my smoothie page! If you are just looking for some great smoothie recipes just scroll down a bit. If you want to learn about some of the great health benefits of smoothies just read on.

Having a healthy breakfast smoothie in the morning is a great way to start off any day. They are easy, healthy and taste great.

Let's face it. With today's schedules it can be very difficult to make time for breakfast at all. And if we do get breakfast, it's usually in the form of fast food.

If you had to rank your meals in order of importance, breakfast would rank number one! Breakfast wakes up your metabolism and tells your body to start burning fat. You don't want to miss out on this every day.

Smoothies can act as a meal substitute and a potent snack for a few reasons:

1. They require little time.

2. The berries, flavored whey powder or other fruit makes them taste like dessert.

3. Because they are thick they take up a lot of room in your stomach making you feel fuller longer.

You can easily make something different each day. They never have to get boring because the possibilities are endless.

By downing one of these smoothies with fruits and vegetables mixed in each day you will save yourself from a variety of health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity among other things.

Whole food nutrition tastes better than popping pills anyday. Besides, unless you take a really good multi-vitamin they don't do much anyhow. And those diet plans with prepared meals can be very expensive.

You can come up with your own concoctions by using milk, low-fat vanilla yougurt, whey powder and ice as the main ingredients.

Healthy eating doesn't need to be boring, expensive or time consuming.

Also, if you don't do well with lactose or you're on the Paleo Diet, you can substitute coconut milk or almond milk instead of cows milk. I personally have been enjoying them this way for a few weeks myself. I think you'll like it.

Get Your Daily Fruit Serving With a Breakfast Smoothie

Have a hard time getting the recommended amount of fruit in your diet???

A lot of people have a hard time with breakfast. Either they skip it all together or they eat unhealthy foods at say, fast food restaurants.

Both of these options are unnecessary and dangerous to your health.

With breakfast smoothies these options are a thing of the past. They can be made in about 3-5 minutes (including clean up). If you are pressed for time in the morning you can make your smoothie the night before and have it on the way to work.

There is simply no easier way to get in a good portion of your daily serving of fruits. A pop tart will just not get you going the way a healthy breakfast smoothie will.

Did you know that the USDA Dietary Guidelines Committee has just raised the minimum recommended amout of fruit a day to nine servings (up from 5 servings) based on a 2000 calorie diet?

This could seem like an impossible feat without the help of healthy breakfast smoothies.

I use a Vita-Mix to make my breakfast smoothies. It's on the spendy side, but it has a 7 year warrenty and can do so much more than just blend stuff. It can make ice cream, hot soup, batter, syrups, peanut butter, and it purees (perfect for baby food). I figured I go through about one blender per year and can only do a couple things with it, so getting one will pay for itself in no time.

Breakfast Smoothies for Weight Management

Making healthy breakfast smoothies is a great way to start a healthy lifestyle

Notice I used the words (healthy lifestyle) and not diet.

In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle you have to change your old eating habits. Starting with a healthy breakfast is the easiest and most beneficial change you can make.

Research has shown that by having a healthy breakfast you will give your metabolism a jumpstart for the day. So don't miss out on this benefit you can give yourself each and every day.

Say Goodbye To Processed Foods

Processed foods have up to 80% of the vitamins and minerals missing. Manufacturers add back only a handful of the hundreds of nutrients they have removed.

The $450 billion food industry tells us that fresh food is pricy and we don't have time to prepare meals from scratch. They have campaigns that tell us that packaged, processed foods with additives, preservatives and fillers are a healthy choice that can save us time and money.

Nothing Could Be Further From The Truth!

Whole foods are the road to longevity and health. They are more delicious and more nutritious than you thought possible.

Breakfast smoothies also make you feel fuller for a longer period of time. You don't get those early morning cravings like you do when you eat pre-packaged processed foods.

I've placed some of my favorite recipes below for you to check out.

With each of these recipes below, you are getting in about 3 servings of fruit for breakfast, and start your day off on the right foot.

Smoothie Tip

You can make every smoothie a Green Smoothie by adding a little spinach, cabbage or kale. You'll never taste them and still get all the benefits!

Double Chocolate Fruit Smoothie

I start with 8 ounces of Chocolate Almond Milk and add to that the following ingredients...

Weight Watchers Chocolate Smoothie packet but you can use a whey protein powder of your choice if you prefer.

1 small banana

1 cup frozen sliced strawberries

2 Tbsp. Cool Whip Free

1/2 tray of ice cubes

Then I blend it in my Vita-Mix Machine until it is nice and thick almost like ice cream.

Making A Double Chocolate Fruit Smoothie - Making a healthy breakfast smoothie using my VitaMix

Pineapple Banana Strawberry Smoothie

With this one I begin with 8 ounces of a light orange juice (something with about 50 calories), then I add to that

Weight Watchers Vanilla Smoothie Packet but you can use a whey protein of your choice if you prefer

1/2 cup crushed pineapple

1 cup frozen sliced strawberries

1 small banana

2 Tbsp. Cool Whip Free

1/2 tray of ice cubes.

And once again blend until it is nice and thick.

Smoothie Tip

Smoothies aren't just for breakfast. They make great between meal snacks or even dessert! The next time you have an ice cream craving, whip up a smoothie instead.

Be Bold...Combine Your Smoothie with Coffee

I love coffee...well actually I love coffee that doesn't actually taste anything at all like coffee. That being said a delicious cup of "fake" coffee is extremely filling but only for a while.

I was always having to choose between my warm cup of coffee (that only keeps me satisfied for a short time) and a big smoothie (that keeps me satisfied until lunch or longer) but if I choose the smoothie while I feel good about my choice I would end up with a caffeine deprivation headache later in the day.

This is when my husband suggested that I combine them both and "kill two birds with one stone" so to speak. So I pulled out my Vita-Mix and began creating. I have come up with two recipes I really love. The hardest part was getting used to the fact that my coffee was now cold. Yes, I know people actually prefer it that way...I still don't get it. But with both of the recipes I have created you can't really taste the coffee in either one. There is just enough in there to keep me from getting that dreadful headache later in the day.

Cafe' Mocha

1 Cup Coffee (whatever flavor you like)

1/4 Vanilla Almond Milk (or whatever milk you prefer)

2 Scoops Chocolate Protein Powder

1-2 TBSP. Chocolate Pudding Mix

1 Banana

5-6 Ice Cubes

Dollop of Cool Whip

Put all ingredients in your blender and blend on high until smooth

Fruity Cafe' Smoothe'

1 Cup Coffee (whatever flavor you like)

1/4 Cup Vanilla Almond Milk (or whatever milk you prefer)

2 Scoops Vanilla Protein Powder

Frozen Strawberries (I don't generally measure I just add until it looks good)

1 Banana

Spoonful of Crushed Pineapple

Dollop of Cool Whip

1-2 TBSP. Cheesecake Pudding Mix

5-6 Ice Cubes

Put all ingredients in your blender and blend on high until smooth

Summer Smoothie

2/3 Cup sliced frozen strawberries

1 Banana

1/2 Cup Kiwi

4 Ounces low-fat vanilla yogurt

3/4 Cup 1/2% or 1% Milk

2 Teaspoons vanilla whey powder

1/2 Tray ice cubes (6-7)

Blend until smooth.

Strawberry Field Marshall Smoothie

1/2 Cup low-fat vanilla yogurt

1 Cup 1/2% or 1% Milk

2 Teaspoons peanut butter

1 Cup sliced frozen strawberries

2 Teaspoons whey powder

1/2 Tray ice cubes (6-7)

Blend until smooth

Great Smoothie Bases

You can use either protein powder or a general smoothie packet as a base for your smoothie.

If you want something to add some flavor I recommend just using a smoothie packet, but if you are using your smoothie in conjunction with daily workouts to help build muscle or lose weight I would suggest a protein powder.

Fruit Combo Smoothie

1/2 Cup pineapple

1/2 Pear

1/2 Medium apple

1/2 Orange, peeled & halved

1/2 Tray ice cubes (6-7)

Blend until smooth.

Cherry-Vanilla Smoothie

Blend 1 1/2 cups frozen pitted cherries

1-1/4 cups milk

3 tablespoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup ice.

Smoothie Tip

Healthy Breakfast Smoothies also make awesome pre and post workout drinks! You get a good amout of protein with the protein powder you put in, plus plenty of carbs. Just what you need after a good workout.

Vitamix - The best kitchen appliance you will EVER own!!

I have been making smoothies both for breakfast and dessert for over 10 years and in that time I have gone thru 4 blenders (about 1 per year or so at about $100 each). For Christmas 2008 my husband bought me a Vita-Mix (don't laugh...I LOVE IT!!!) I have more or less used and abused it every single day since then and it still runs like a dream! The seven year warranty was a major selling point. Plus, the customer service that I received was top notch and it's made here in the USA. I strongly recommend that everyone stop wasting money on a blender from your local housewares store and invest in a quality machine like the Vitamix. I'm not trying to sound like a salesman I just love my Vitamix and want to convey that.

Vitamix 5200 - 7 YR WARRANTY Variable Speed Countertop Blender with 2 HP Motor and 64-Ounce Jar
Vitamix 5200 - 7 YR WARRANTY Variable Speed Countertop Blender with 2 HP Motor and 64-Ounce Jar

Mixed Fruit Smoothie

1/2 Cup sliced frozen strawberries unsweetened

1 Medium banana

1/2 Medium orange (including white part of peel)

1/4 Cup frozen peaches

1/2 Cup vanilla nonfat yogurt

1/2 Tray ice cubes (about 6-7)

Coconut-Pineapple Smoothie

Freeze about 2 cups coconut water in 1 or 2 ice-cube trays.

Blend 2 cups each chopped pineapple (either canned, fresh or frozen) and coconut ice cubes

1 1/2 tablespoons lime juice

1 tablespoon honey

1/2 cup coconut water.

Mango, Peach, Pineapple, Strawberry, Banana Smoothie

1 Cup Vanilla Almond Milk

1 Vanilla Smoothie Packet (I use Weight Watchers)

1 Banana

1-2 Tbsp. dry cheesecake pudding mix (I use sugar free fat free)

1 Cup or so of Dole Mixed Fruit (Mango, Strawberries, Pineapple, and Peaches)

6-8 Ice Cubes

Blend until smooth

Peach-Mango-Banana Smoothie

Blend one cup each peach and mango either fresh or frozen.

1 Cup vanilla yogurt and 1 Cup ice

1 Banana

1/2 Cup Milk if too thick

Ultimate Smoothie

Not for the faint of heart!

This smoothie is my husbands recipe and he swears by it...beware some of the ingredients are not what you would normally put into a smoothie!

1 Cup Vanilla Almond Milk

1 Vanilla smoothie packet (again I use Weight Watchers)

2 free range raw eggs

1 to 6 Tbsps. grass fed butter (he likes more) We use Organic Valley

1 Tsp. MCT Oil (refined coconut oil)

Whatever fruit you like

6-8 Ice Cubes

Blend until smooth

Strawberry Banana Coconut Smoothie

1/2 Cup fresh or frozen unsweetened strawberries

1/2 Medium banana

2 Tablespoons cream of coconut

1/4 Cup pineapple

1/4 Cup skim milk

1/2 Tray ice cubes (6-7)

Blend until smooth.

Hide A Serving Of Veggies In Your Smoothie

Can't seem to eat enough veggies??

Not many people don't like the taste of fruit. Vegetables, however, are another story. Let's face it, we are probably NOT getting the daily recommended amount of veggies in our diet. And don't get me started on trying to get your kids to eat them....

Well now you can sneak in at least one or two servings of veggies per day. And you won't even taste them!

How?

Green Smoothies, that's how.

If you put in a serving or two of veggies along with your fruit smoothie you will get all the benefits and none of the veggie taste. It's a win win for you and your family. Believe it or not my daughter actually requests green smoothies on a daily basis.

Smoothies can be indeed a HUGE help for weight loss. My instructor Dr. Charles elaborated a crazy recipe. It's the perfect smoothie in my opinion. I wrote about his approach to weight loss in a blog, www.bodyzenith.com

I love smoothies and agree with you 100% on their value. I'm definitely going to give the Ultimate smoothly recipe a try. One thing I like to do with mine are to leave bite size chunks of pineapple or apple to mix in after the blending so I get a contrast with a part smoothie and part chewy dynamic. @anonymous: no that isnt true....blending things or making them smaller doesn't break down the nutritional elements that they contain.... it actually makes digestion easier because it increases the surface area of the foods making it easier for enzymes to digest them better...it increases the surface area of the foods. however u should stick to milk such as almond or soy , greek yogurt and freshly squeezed juice to keep it as healthy as possible

@anonymous: Not as I understand it. I'm pretty sure it is just easier for your body to break down when you blend your food. This can be good and bad I suppose. If you want to feel full for a long period of time I'd say stick to whole filling foods (bacon and eggs for example) and if you want something your body can process right away like after a workout or first thing in the morning a smoothie might be the way to go. I'll usually do a smoothie a couple times per week or if I'm running late in the morning, not every day. But that's just me. I'd just say do what works and feels best for you. Try experimenting a little over a few weeks and see what you feel like.

I have been drinking smoothies for breakfast making sure not add sugar. I add oatmeal, some juice, milk, bananas, yogurt and different fruits each day. My brother though said they bad for because you body is not absorbing all the nutrients from the smoothie because it is already broken down, is this true?

1/2 cup of crushed ice, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1 banana, 5 fresh strawberries, 1 handful of fresh blueberries, 4 tablespoons vanilla low fat yogurt, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 scoop of whey powder. A very delicious smoothie that will fill you up until lunch. I have this every morning along with one slice of toasted fruit bread that I purchase from my local farmers market. I also substitute frozen pineapple/mango/peaches for the blueberries/strawberries to have variety. For the frozen fruits, I just use 4 or 5 chunks of each fruit . Use your blender and enjoy a tasty treat.

I usually have my smoothie made as follows, I call it the Fruity Crunchy Smoothie:

1/2 cup milk (i use 3.25% milk so I add 1/2 cup water with this, you can just use 1 cup skim milk)

1 tablespoon of toasted ground flaxseed

      1/3 cup of granola

      1/2 a medium banana

      1/3 cup of frozen mango

      1/3 cup of fresh strawberries

      Blend until smooth and voila!

I change up my fruits but my base fruit is banana (ALWAYS). I have variations of avocado, blueberries, apple, and on and on and on..... Enjoy!
