Make unique homemade gifts by personalising the chocolate truffle recipe

Add a unique flavor to your homemade recipe

The basic chocolate truffle recipe is so easy that children can make it ( with adult supervision)

One of the best things about homemade chocolate truffles is that you can adapt the recipe to make it unique and personal for your loved one. How can I make homemade chocolate truffles? Read on!

Chocolate truffles can be made in all sorts of flavors. For the sophisticated chocolate lover, add a drop of Brandy, Cointreau, Rum or Baileys, if a little liqueur chocolate is your thing.

If you are making homemade chocolate truffles for a gift for mom, add the flavor that you know is your mom's favorite- Baileys, Tia Maria or Bacardi are three great choices.

For nut lovers, roll the chocolate truffles in crushed almonds or pistachios before the truffle sets for a lovely nutty finish.

You can also flavor your chocolate truffles with coconut, orange, peppermint- whatever suits your taste.

If you are making the truffles as a gift, you can make this a personalized gift by customizing the flavor. If you know Granddad loves his Bourbon, add a drop of Bourbon to the truffle mixture. These are magnificent gifts for men who love chocolate ( and I know there are lots of them out there!)

Rum truffles, brandy truffles, peppermint truffles, nut truffles- there's lots of choice whatever you decide to make.

Pick your chocolate truffle recipe, practice a little, then plan your packaging to make these home made chocolate truffles into a really special homemade gift.

I'm giving you my tips on how to make chocolate truffles, then some guidance and ideas about how to package your chocolate truffles to make impressive home made gifts. If you like the look of these homemade candies you might lke to try my homemade peppermint candy recipe .

Have fun making and giving chocolate truffles .

Chocolate truffles need really high quality chocolate - What chocolate do I need to make chocolate truffles?.

If you are going to go to the trouble of making your own chocolate truffles as special gifts, then you must spend the money needed to buy hgih cocoa content chocolate. I suggest minimum 70% cocoa solids for a great, dark , sophisticated taste.

Cheap chocolate or cooking chocolate will just not give you the quality you need.

Don't skimp on the quality of the chocolate.

If you want to you can start with a ready flavored chocolate such as Lindt's Orange chocolate that simplifies the truffle making even more, but make sure you use a top of the range chocolate with natural flavorings.

You can make a white chocolate truffle for a change, if you prefer the taste of white chocolate. A mixture of dark and white truffles also looks great in a presentation box.

Endangered Species Panther, Dark Chocolate (88%), 3-Ounce Bars (Pack of 12)
Endangered Species Panther, Dark Chocolate (88%), 3-Ounce Bars (Pack of 12)

This is very dark for those who like their chocolate very strong.

Package your home made chocolate truffles in appealing boxes and bags - You can buy packaging for every occasion to make your Truffles look really special.

Look out for the very smaller size cupcake papers. These I recommend are just 1 1/4 inch diameter. Anything else is really just too big for a rich chocolate truffle.

Package in a pretty Festive box for the Holidays,or tie in a clear bag with festive ribbons.

You can use a plain cello bag and make your own ties.

Give as a thoughtful homemade gifts, or take round to friends when you visit.

How to make Homemade chocolate truffles - Here's your basic homemade chocolate truffle recipe

Home made chocolate truffles beautifully presented in a gift box.

280g/10 oz good-quality dark chocolate ,minimum 70% cocoa solids

284ml pot double cream(UK)/ heavy cream(USA) ( approx 10 fluid oz US )

50g/ 1/2 stick unsalted butter

1.Chop the chocolate and tip into a large bowl. Put the cream and butter into a saucepan and heat gently until the butter melts and the cream reaches simmering point. Remove from heat, then pour over the chocolate. Stir the chocolate and cream together until you have a smooth mixture.

At this point you can add the flavoring of your choice- test for taste. A few drops go a long way in adding flavor.

Cool and chill for at least 4 hrs.

2.To shape the truffles, dip a melon baller in hot water and scoop up balls of the mixture, then drop the truffles onto greaseproof paper. Or lightly coat your hands in flavourless oil (such as sunflower) and roll the truffles between your palms. You could also use a piping bag to pipe rounds onto non stick paper.

3.Coat your truffles with you choice of toppings immediately after shaping. Tip toppings into a bowl and gently roll the truffles until evenly coated, then chill on non stick paper. You can use cocoa, chopped nuts ( pistachio look good), confectioners sugar, chocolate vermicelli or fine coconut.

4.Store in the fridge in an airtight container for 3 days, or freeze for up to a month. Defrost in the fridge overnight. To give as presents, place 8-10 truffles in individual foil or paper cases inside small, lined boxes tied with ribbon. Keep in the fridge until you're ready to give

The top chefs all love chocolate truffles, Delia Smith, Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson- all of them know that this is a homemade gift that punches above its weight.

Show off your home made chocolate truffles with professional looking packaging - Candy cups and candy boxes will make your truffles into a great looking gift.

If you want to show your home made chocolate truffles to their best advantage, you can spend a little extra on foil candy cups, shiny presentation boxes and ribbons.

If you really want to save money, my tip is to save used boxes from candies or other items that you have bought or received, then recover these boxes with gift wrap to recycle them. I use doilies to line old boxes. Doilies make a lovely lace like liner to a recycled box

@ashleydpenn: It's a pretty forgiving recipe. You can add a few drops of anything, and I've never worried about the temperature.

    • ashleydpenn profile image

      ashleydpenn 4 years ago

Will definitely try this! When you talk about adding a few drops of flavour (I'm thinking maybe Bayleys for my wife!), does the flavouring need to be at room temperature, to prevent curdling, or does it not really matter as you've added the cream already?

Hi! No need to use expensive commercial chocolate. Baking choc is a third of the price. Ghirardelli etc is good, get the chips, or baking bloc. You can make ANY percentages by melting semi-sweet with 100% unsweetened, or with White chips (slightly different flavor due to condensed milk in the white, which I really like) My favorites are 95% for covering my home made orange-honey marzipan, and 75% for flavor bars, such as Almond, etc, Melt it in a pot with thick bottom on low heat. Delicious. Good luck, Catyes.
