A true classic cocktail with such humble beginnings, this buttery rum drink dates back to the colonial times. The hot buttered rum has evolved and changed slightly but the awesome taste of spicy cinnamon, buttery sweetness remains the same.

A simple recipe to make and the best part is the ability to make ahead of time and freeze for months. Making Hot Buttered Rum is easy, and a great cocktail to indulge in anytime you want, whether you are serving a whole roomful of guests or just yourself. Ingredients to Make Hot Buttered Rum

  • 1 lb of Butter
  • 1 lb Brown Sugar
  • 1 lb Confectioners Sugar
  • 1 quart French Vanilla Ice Cream 1
  • Tbsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp Nutmeg

  • Melt Butter in a large pan over medium heat
  • Blend in brown sugar and Confectioners Sugar

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Butter
  • 1 lb Brown Sugar
  • 1 lb Confectioners Sugar

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a pan over medium heat and mix in brown sugar and confectioners sugar.
  2. Remove from heat and add Ice Cream, Vanilla extract, Cinnamon and Nutmeg and whisk until smooth.
  3. Pour mixtures into containers and freeze. Freeze for at least 2 hours prior to serving.
  4. The Hot Buttered Rum mixture will stay fresh in an airtight container in the freezer for a couple of weeks or in the freezer for a couple of months.

Hot Buttered Rum Cocktail

Okay, lets make the drink!

  • Warm the mugs or glasses to be used.
  • Fill with hot water and empty.
  • Optional: Rim your glass or mug with white and brown rimming sugar.
  • Scoop some of the Hot Buttered Rum Mix and put in glass or mug.
  • Add Some Dark Rum. The darker the better.
  • Boil Some Water and pour to fill glass or mug with the hot water.
  • Top with Whipped Cream and sprinkle with Nutmeg.

Fresh Whipped Cream

1 cup Heavy Cream

1 Tbsp Confectioners Sugar

1 Tbsp Vanilla

Beat heavy cream until peaks form, do not over beat or you will make butter.

Add sugar and vanilla and continue to beat until whipped.

*You can use a Rum extract instead of vanilla to enhance the rum flavor in your cocktail.

      @ismeedee: There is no Rum in the mix but there is definitely Rum in the drink. The darker rum the better. I have never had it without. :)

      @Mickie Gee: I used a 12 oz mug. When adding the hot buttered rum mix, I started with a 1/4 cup and tasted it. If you like it sweeter, you will want to add more and if you do not like things too sweet you may want to start with less. The RUM, a jigger is fine, 1 oz is the typical measurement of a shot, which is what I like, but my hubby will add more. I guess this is another adjustment done by taste. As far as the hot water you will need enough to fill the cup but not to the very top. Make sure to leave about a 1/4 inch for the fresh whipped cream. (Which is a must for this drink.) Enjoy!

      OK, your hot buttered rum sounds wonderful. However, I am one of those people that needs exact directions. Exactly how much of the mix (ex. 1 tablespoon, 1/4 cup?) , rum (a jigger full, 2 oz?) and hot water (1/2 cup ?) does one need to make this yummy drink. I know it probably depends on the mug size, but I I want it to be the best drink ever. Your photos are wonderful btw!
