Anything Better Then A Hot Dog?
Is there anything better then on a summer day eating a steamed or grilled Hot Dog? I like them with everything on them or with just mustard. And I'm pretty sure even the health gurus' on TV eat them every once in a while.
A Hot Dog that is cooked right and dressed perfectly can put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. Plump and juicy sitting on a plain bun, a fancy seeded bun or just between two slices of bread can transport you back to your childhood faster then a tall glass of lemonade.
Mustard, ketchup, onions, relish, sour kraut, pickles, and on and on. Try a little celery salt or garlic salt in boiling water when cooking your Hot Dogs. Wrap them in a really sharp cheese before they hit the bun. I love dicing up fresh from the garden tomatoes and cilantro, mixing in some olive oil and smothering the Hot Dogs in it all. And don't get me started about fresh pepper or green tomato salsa on my Hot Dogs.
Can you ever sing the praises of Hot Dogs enough? Of course you can't, Hot Dogs are the embodiment of summer in America. Oh and it doesn't matter if your state is blue or red, Hot Dogs are for everyone.Call it a Hot Dog, Frankfurter, Coney, Tube Steak or Wiener. They all cook up with flavor and deliver enjoyment in every bite.
What's New in the News - Gourmet Dogs, New Toppings and more
In the Miami area there is a new dog house and it's called Franktitude They have toppings galore and even a salmon dog on a whole wheat bun. If I ever visit the area you can bet I'll be there.
Oh and also in the Miami area and a couple of other Florida locations is the Dogma Grill.This place has beef, turkey and veggie dogs with so many toppings I would never leave.
In New York City Mandler's Original Sausage Co unfortunately has closed, this place was a topping freaks heaven and it will be missed. Check out Crif's I have not been to but have heard it's good and also I've heard great thing about Westville, a place you can take a date who wants a salad while you try a few of their hot dogs, don't let the word organic on their menu scare you, they have the goods.
Don't forget the Brooklyn Diner in Times Square and also at Carnegie Hall, they have something called the 15 Bite Hot Dog and believe me it's big.
July is national Hot dog month and that means that Nathan's will have their famous Hot Dog eating contest on July 4th.

4th of July 2009 at Nathan's Chestnut keeps hot dog title
4th if July 2008 - Brooklyn, NY (Sports Network) - Joey Chestnut edged Takeru Kobayashi in overtime during the 93rd annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on Friday.
Chestnut, the defending champion, and Kobayashi, a six-time former champ, both consumed 59 hot dogs during the 10-minute regulation time period, forcing a five-dog eat off.
Chestnut then squeaked by the Japanese legend in the overtime period, retaining the famous Mustard Belt.
Last year, Chestnut stunned Kobayashi by consuming a world-record 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes.
Both boiling and steaming take around 7-10 minutes to cook. Use 4 cups of water per dog when boiling. I put celery or garlic salt in the water to add a bit more flavor.
Some people find letting the Hot Dogs cook until they break open is best and others only heat them for 3 to 5 minutes. While Hot Dogs are precooked heating them through is recommended and brings out the flavor.

I'm not sure if this was produced as an advertisement or just a home movie by the stands owner but, with a catchy tune and a few words it just might have been a winner. How often have you been served hot dogs on a patterned piece of good china from the local stand?

On a stick really brings out the primal Hot Dog experience. Let the Hot Dogs warm near the flames and only pass then through the flame toward the end of cooking. You also can let them catch on fire in the campfire for that full rustic black flavor and taste, but be careful.
Using foil opens up a lot of possibilities. Double fold the foil making a pouch to hold not only the Hot Dogs but salsa, onions & peppers, summer squash & tomato sauce or precooked potato slices with a butter & garlic sauce. Heat in the coals till heated through.
