Hot Dog Ratings

Updated on June 23, 2015

The best of the wursts

I will be rating Hot Dogs from here on out, in the quest to find a replacement for my all time favorite hot dog, Jordan's Natural Casing. Jordan's were made by Tyson, and the original plant was closed years ago. I have never found a suitable replacement. I am on the lookout for Jordan's Natural Casing Red hot dogs, though I am unsure if they are made the same way, or even by the same company.

Dogs have come and gone, and I've had temporary favorites in the past, but always come back to Jordan's. Hopefully someone else in search of the right dog can learn and find a suitable replacement for their favorite.

Currently, I will be doing an overall rating, then a description of the dog.

5/10 will be the break even point, an average dog. Below 5 and the hot dog was bad, above 5 and it was good.

Ekrich Farm

Boiled: Ground too fine, almost mushy, no snap. Extra flavoring to hide cheap meat choice/cuts. 5/10 Average, but better than Bar S

Hofmann German

Natural Casing

Good snap, very pleasing. Taste is good too. Grind a little too fine. Taste is good, but not great. Not super juicy.

Tasty, but the casing snapped open, so it wasn't as snappy.

flavor better, snap less, remains 8/10

Johnsonville New Orleans Spicy Smoked Sausage - Andouille Recipe

Overall 7/10 I don't feel this sausage quite does REAL andouille justice. Decent eat, but if you are looking for strong andouille flavor (and spiciness) look elsewhere. If you like a more mild andouille, this one may fit the bill. It is spicier than the average dog though.

Boiled - decent flavor, snap is present, but not great. Grind is good, feels meaty. Would eat again

Grilled - improved flavor, snap is present, better than beore, but not great. Juicier. These sausages seem prone to splitting their case on a grill. Even at low temperature/flame, had some case splittage.

Kayem Natural Casing Beef Franks - 100% Beef

Boiled, eaten off a fork. 7 hot dogs out of 10

Grilled, eaten off a fork. 8 hot dogs out of 10

More snap than your typical store bought hot dog. I found the grind to be too fine, not enough spice, not juicy enough and flavorful enough.

A good hot dog, but I would want something stronger for an everyday eat. Lacked character.

Grilling intensified the flavors and made more juicy. Worth the cooking time.

Oscar Meyer Classic Weiners

Boiled 6/10

Flavor is actually pretty good. Zero snap and grind is a bit too fine. Good tasting, but not much else.

Publix Jumbo Beef Hot Dogs

6/10 Meaty enough, not too fine of a grind. Lacks big flavor, no snap.

Skinless Beef Frankfurters

Boiled 7/10

Nice and meaty, decent snap, but not like a natural casing dog. Nice and juicy.

Sabrett DOES make natural casing hot dogs, which I am on the lookout for!

What is your dog of choice? - What should I look for next?
