Apples and hot spiced cider are signs that Autumn is here!

Helpful Tips

The fragrance of hot spiced apple cider will make your house smell warm and inviting!

You can add rum, bourbon, or whiskey to the cider for an adults only Halloween party!

Top with freshly whipped cream or ice cream and a grating of fresh nutmeg for a decadent apple pie a la mode flavor.

Hot Spiced Apple cider

There's a chill in the air on an early autumn evening. You want something warm, sweet and delicious to drink for yourself, your family, and/or your party guests. This spiced traditional hot apple cider recipe will warm everyone's heart, it's a cozy way to welcome fall!

Hot Spiced Apple Cider has always been a favorite hot beverage for autumn and winter holidays. Or a comforting, cozy hygge warm beverage in the evening instead of a caffeinated drink. If not topped with cream or added sugar it's even a healthier choice compared to hot chocolate or a spiced pumpkin latte.

This low-fat spiced apple cider recipe is easy and inexpensive to make. Crockpot apple cider can be non-alcoholic or add some apple brandy, cognac, spiced rum or brandy for your adult guests to bring out, even more, apple cider flavor. This slow cooker Halloween spiked cider can be made with less sugar for people who are concerned with high sugar beverages. If you keep the cider warm in the crockpot or slow cooker during your Halloween party or holiday party your house will smell like the holidays!

How to keep apple cider warm?

Use a slow cooker!

Using a programmable slow cooker keeps the spiced cider warm throughout your dinner, party or open house. Place it on a buffet table or kitchen island and set up a hot apple cider bar so that your guests can help themselves to extras including:

  • Cinnamon sticks, candy canes or rock candy stirrers as stir sticks
  • Whipped cream
  • Rum or Bourbon for the adults
  • Sugar free syrups including pumpkin spice and vanilla
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg shakers

Note: If you plan on offering rock candy stirrers or extra sweeteners you can omit the brown sugar in the recipe.

What do I need?

Ingredients for a really good hot spiced cider!

  • Crockpot or slow cooker
  • 1 gallon unfiltered apple cider
  • square of cheesecloth or a large tea infuser
  • 2 whole oranges
  • 1/4 cup-1/2 cup brown sugar
  • whole nutmeg
  • whole allspice
  • 12 whole cloves
  • cinnamon sticks
  • star anise
  • Alternatively use apple cider mulling spices instead of buying all of the individual apple cider spices

Apple Cider Mulling Spices - An Aromatic Blend of Holiday Spices

What are mulling spices?

Since colonial times, Americans have been serving mulled wine and mulled cider during the holidays! Mulling spices vary by manufacturer but generally they combine cinnamon, cloves, allspice and citrus peel. Mulling spices are very aromatic and add a festive fragrance to your Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas or holiday party. You can also use mulling spices for mulled wine.

If you don't have a large square of cheesecloth you can use a large tea infuser to hold the mulling spices in your spiced apple cider!

Knudsen Spiced Cider

My favorite for a quick and easy spiked spiced cider? Microwave a cup of Knudsen Cider & Spice and add a shot of rum or bourbon to the warm cider. Top with whipped cream.

Step 1

Spiced Apple Cider Recipe

Warm the cider on the stove top until steaming; whisk in the brown sugar (to taste) until completely dissolved.

Turn the crock-pot on high and fill with warmed apple cider. Look for unfiltered apple cider, don't substitute apple juice it won't taste the same.

Step 2

Stick the oranges with the whole cloves and add to the crock pot. Tie up 3-4 star anise, 4 cinnamon sticks, 2 whole nutmegs and allspice in a piece of cheesecloth and add to the crock pot. When the hot spiced apple cider starts steaming turn down the heat to low, keep it on low for up to 12 hours.

Step 3

Serve the spiced cider in warmed mugs. You can top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a grating of fresh nutmeg.

I agree...Hot Spiced Cider is a wonderful fall and winter warmer and makes your house smell delightful! I just made two batches of glogg...also great during the holidays and cold months. My recipes are on my glogg lens. Cheers!

I love the way the scent of spiced apple cider makes me feel. Since autumn is my favorite time of the year, cider for me is everything that I love most about fall poured into a cup. Then I drink it into my body and become autumn. It doesn't get any better than that. I'm going to use this recipe. Thanks!

Since those are some of my most favorite spices of childhood, it's the spicy taste that I like best. Nice recipe.

I adore hot spiced cider and make it every fall/winter, as soon as fresh cider becomes available here! The warmth and sweetness of this drink, along with the fragrant spices reminiscent of holiday baking, make this beverage a delicious, homey treat the entire family can enjoy. My recipe is a bit different than yours, but the same general idea, and I'm sure yours is absolutely yummy, too! Blessed.

The aroma of hot spiced cider is my best memory. I don't like drinking it as much 'cause I usually burn my tongue. :P

This Christmas I served a non-alcoholic version of glogg in the crockpot that used apple cider. Orange peel, raisins, and spices. It was delicious and I agree that the smell is just wonderful.

Love it! Now I can have spiced cider with my sugar cookies in Grandma's jar. I won't pour the cider in there though! I didn't know that Knudsen made cider. I don't think I can get it here in Arizona. I miss the apple orchards of Ohio! Did you know that Knudsen is what Chuck Wollery always used to plug? His favorite was their cottage cheese though. I can get that here! Blessed
