Hot Tuna Hoagies

Updated on June 3, 2014

Hot Tuna Hoagies Warm My Heart

I was raised on this style of sandwich - an open-faced, oven-toasted tuna sandwich - we call Hot Tuna Hoagies. I grew up in a family of 8 so my mom would whip up a boatload of tuna and spread it onto a full-size french bread loaf, which we then cut up into slices. As my brothers and sister got older and left home, the bread got smaller and smaller until we were building our own. This recipe serves only 2-3 people because it's just my husband and I these days, but I want you to know that this is a delicious affordable meal for a family of any size.

Since I got married, I have shared this treat with my husband and he has shared his recipe for Dilly Tuna Salad with me. On this page, I'll share both with you in the hopes that you love Hot Tuna Hoagies as much as I do. They are a warm, cozy meal on a cold night, a refreshing flavor on hot nights, and an easy, hits-the-spot taste when you need it delicious and now.

All photos on this page are my own.

Did you know that there's more to tuna than a tuna salad sandwich and tuna noddle casserole? Explore appetizers, soups, sandwiches, salads, and main dishes. To be honest, I'm pretty relieved they didn't try to take on desserts. It adds to my confidence in this cookbook and the photos make me want to try every single recipe! Check it out.

Dilly Tuna Salad
Dilly Tuna Salad

I was raised with just the basics - tuna got mixed with mayo. Nothing more, nothing less. When I got married, my husband treated me to his own special mixture that I call Delectable Dilly Tuna Salad, and it amped up my world exponentially (at least as it relates to tuna). I hope you like it too!

By the way, this recipe calls for dried dill, but it's outstanding with fresh dill. We love it when the fresh greens come up in the garden.

  • 2 cans white chunk tuna packed in water
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1 Tbsp. dried dill
  • 1/2 tsp. celery salt
  • 2 slices finely chopped red onion

  1. Chop the onion.
  2. Press as much water out of the tuna as you can.
  3. Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix with a fork to break up the chunks of tuna.
  4. Enjoy!!

Wholesome Hot Tuna Hoagies

Hot Tuna Hoagies are a great comfort food from my childhood and they can take many forms. LIke I said earlier, they can be on every size and shape of bread from a hamburger bun to a french bread loaf as long as your arm. And Hot Tuna Hoagies go great with sweet potato fries (as shown), chips, or your favorite side dish.

I love mine with sliced fresh tomato and olives. My husband goes with tomato, onion slices, and pepperoncini peppers. It's perfect because we both get to enjoy the healthy base plus whatever toppings our palates desire.

Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 10 min
Ready in: 20 min
Yields: 2-3 people

  • 1 batch Dilly Tuna Salad (or tuna salad of choice)
  • 2 hoagie buns
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Toppings of choice: tomato slices, sliced olives, pepperoncini peppers, jalapeno slices, onion slices, additional toppings of your choice

  1. Cut open the hoagie bun and lay flat.
  2. Spread a thin layer of Dilly Tuna Salad on the bun. Go ahead and get it to the edges so you have that delicious flavor in every bite.
  3. Add your toppings of choice.
  4. Sprinkle cheese on top.
  5. Place Hot Tuna Hoagies on a baking sheet and put on oven rack on highest level, close to the broiling heat element. Set oven to broil with door partially open so you can watch. When the cheese is melted and starting to turn golden brown, remove the Hoagies.
  6. Allow to cool for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Enjoy!
