I Love Chicago Style Hot Dogs

Updated on December 3, 2014

I Love To Eat Chicago Style Hot Dogs

"I love Chicago Style Hot Dogs." So, I'm not "in" love with them, but I do love to eat them... I even smile when I'm just thinking of eating one, and of course one usually turns into two (okay three). In a sentence, the Chicago Style Hot Dog consists of - An all-beef hot dog, on a poppy seed bun coated with mustard, add neon green relish, onion, tomato, a dill pickle spear, sport peppers, and the secret spice... a dash of celery salt.

Fortunately I only live about an hour and a half away from the Windy city so it's no big deal to head over on a whim if I get a taste for the real deal. There are a lot of imitators but they don't always get it right. A true Chicago Style Hot Dog has to meet very specific criteria to pass the mustard and any legit Chicago Hot Dog Vendor knows the rules.

How you cook a Chicago Style Hot Dog is also important. Remember hot dogs come to us precooked, so all we are really doing is warming them. I'll get a little push back from some, regarding the best method of heating the dog, but in my world here's a Hint: You never grill, deep fry, barbecue, sauté, microwave, fondue, or roast a Chicago Style Hot Dog. Hmmm, what's that leave? And never, never, never put ketchup on a Chicago Dog!

Buying Hot Dog Machines

People love to eat hot dogs, and it's that passion for eating the highly portable culinary delights that inspires the restaurant equipment manufacturers to offer some of best systems available. Modern day hot dog machines are designed to store, cook and even merchandise hot dogs in a safe and reliable manner.

The low cost of purchasing a hot dog machine makes it possible for easy entry into the world of hot dog vending and if your ambitions are not so entrepreneurial, you can also join the multitudes of people that have purchased a commercial or semi-commercial hot dog cooking machine for their personal use.

Vienna Hot Dogs

If you're from Chicago, you already know that the only dog worthy of being placed front and center on a Chicago Dog is the Vienna Hot Dog. For me nothing else will do and they're available at my local supermarket, so even if I'm making my own Chicago Style Hot Dog at Home, it will be with a Vienna, exclusively.

But don't get me wrong I will .eat other dogs, just not on my Chicago Style Hot Dog. That's reserved exclusively for an all beef Vienna.

How to cook a Chicago Style Dog: The ideal and most respected way of warming the Chicago Style Hot Dog is with a Hot Dog Steamer. In lieu of that you can cheat by warming them in hot water, but "Don't Boil The Dogs" instead heat the water to boiling and back it down to a simmer then add the dog(s) to warm. It won't take long and they'll be ready to eat.

YES! And I loved it. Alas I don't live close enough to Chicago now, since I live in China. No sending hot dogs through the post! But sometimes I dream about them...

No, and now that I learned that Hebrew National dogs aren't what they say they are, I'm off hot dogs --- much as I love them so much. They look fantastic.
