How to Decorate Invisible Cupcakes

Updated on October 4, 2014

The Art of Invisible Baking and Decoration: Cupcakes

Invisible cupcakes and invisible icing are perfect options for people short on time, dieting, on a budget, away with the fairies, or who hate cooking. Or, like me, aren't too fond of cupcakes (tiny, finicky and far too sweet in my opinion!)

This page was originally intended to describe the art of invisible decoration, but then I discovered an appalling lack of information abounded about the entire culinary subject of invisible cupcakes, and so I have extended the recipes to cover those as well. The benefits cited for invisible icing obviously extend to invisible cupcakes, and one can mix and match.

It's up to you whether one has invisible cupcake and icing , or invisible icing and plain cupcake base. Obviously the former is the fancier option, but if you aren't feeling quite that daring, or really need to use up those plain cupcakes you seem to have on your hands, then plain or flavoured cupcakes with invisible icing will still add that extra flair! Invisible cupcakes and standard visible icing is not, however, recommended.

A minor downside of course is that they won't taste of anything - but if we're being honest, we all know that taste is the least important factor in cupcakes!

How To Make and Decorate Invisible Cupcakes - Simple, easy to follow, steps for making and presenting your invisible cupcakes

I am going to assume that you are making the full invisible cupcake - if you are starting with plain cupcakes and simply decorating them with intangible sugars, or see-through sprinkles, or other forms of invisible icing, then skip step one.

Recipe for Invisible Cupcakes

1. Imagine invisible cupcakes.

  • Decide what kind of flour and texture they have - whether they are wholemeal, white, organic, stoneground, or any other variation [optional]
  • Create any intangible fillings or other additions, such as nuts or chocolate chips [optional]

Select your cupcakes (Invisible or otherwise)

  • arrange them in cupcake liners of your choice [optional]
  • on a plate or stand that complements the intended setting [optional]

Get out a mixing bowl [optional step]

  • add no sugar or flavouring
  • mix with dehydrated water

To decorate them, decide what kind of icing they haven't got and what they don't look like.

Ice with the result from the previous step,

  • Enjoy

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime, doubly so.

Wonderful for beginners, you can't go wrong!

Presenting the Cupcakes - A must have in the kitchen

Of course, with invisible cupcakes, presentation is a vital ingredient - some might say, the only ingredient. (But people like that are sceptics, who don't understand the true art of creating and icing invisible cupcakes, and we don't pay any attention to them).

But the fact remains. Presentation, as with all baking for social occasions, is an important factor. You must carefully consider the amount of cupcakes you imagine you have, and how you would like to arrange them. Also bear in mind that as they are invisible, greater attention will be focused on the plate or stand, and so that item must be able to stand up to scrutiny.

Consider a beautifully decorated plate, or a graceful stand, such as this one. The pleasing progression of rising circles that reduce in size has a nice abstract effect, and the pure white will not clash with your cupcakes. The simple, yet elegant design is suitable for garden parties, formal dinners and even weddings! Best of all, white goes with most decorating schemes and is equally suitable indoors and out.

If you like fancy invisible icing designs you might also like ... - All this fun cupcake stuff to present your invisible cupcakes in!

Set off your imaginary cupcakes with exotic and bold liners! The dramatic patterns of hot pink zebra stripes, shining foil, cheerful polka dots or delicate white filigrees will balance out the silent negative space of the cupcakes and create interest and satisfy peoples' mental appetite.

But when choosing, remember that the cupcake liners are not as flexible as the invisible decoration and bear in mind the theme of the occasion!

Perfect snack for parties - make a drinking game out of it!

Benefits of Invisible Cupcake Decoration

More about 'Invisible Cupcake Decoration'

Invisibly iced cupcakes have an enormous number of benefits. You can choose from a wide spectrum of possible colourings, as long as they are out of the visible spectrum (Discworld fans will appreciate octarine icing).

They are light as air, so delicate socialites won't strain their wrists - and in fact, have negative calories, so those delicate socialites will stay delicate! You can even get extravagant with imaginary frosting, intangible icing and see-through sprinkles, and of course, the perennial favourite, transparent topping.

Invisible cupcake decoration is also a safe, easy and exciting activity for children, and can keep them entertained for hours! It's also a wonderful way to introduce them to cooking. It's a no-mess, no-fuss option that creates a highly original dish, that's always in style. You can choose to be as daring or as plain as you like!

And best of all, they are quick and easy - whip them up in seconds, create them as you describe them to your guests (or go for the surprise route and don't describe them at all). Some people have reported wonderful benefits from stress reduction - not only do they relieve the pressure on hosts, but can provide wonderful outlets for long periods of meditation as you consider the perfect invisible decoration.

They're also completely vegan, gluten-free and safe for anyone with food-allergies!

They have a practical use, too - you can use them to help children learn to swim!

Finally, the joy of invisible cupcake decoration is that you can avoid disasters like the wedding cake above - even if your taste is that bad, no one will know!

A great fancy cupcake option for a student on a budget!
