With winter well on the way and forecast to be horrible having lots of delicious hearty stews and slow cooking on the go makes you feel all warm inside.

What I like about this Book

When it comes to cooking I am a simple soul. I like food to taste good be quick and easy to make. To do that you need a no nonsense book that explains things clearly and simply and this book does that.

Also another reason for cooking yourself is that you have control over the ingredients and can move away from processed foods. While a lot of cooks use various ready-made soups like cream of mushroom or onion for speed this book does not. These soups have sugar and added salt which boost up unnecessary calories and it is so unnecessary as you can use other things that are just as creamy and fast to use.

I also like recipes that do what they say without fussy methods or complicated steps which is why I like slow cooking, this book is great for the reluctant cook as well as the enthusiast and you get many decent tasty food recipes that are fairly simple to create attention free cooking.

It uses simple everyday ingredients that are easy to get or you might have kicking around the house.

The book covers everything from soups and pasta, to meat dishes and even dessert. The recipes are great to experiment with over the dark winter months when hearty meals keep you warm and contented.

What is particularly great about this book is that it does not use dishes that use high processed ingredients just good wholesome sound ingredients.

Michele Scicolone is a popular cook of Italian foods and her books are well turned out and the recipes work very well and are reliable.

Instructions for the Slow Cooked Italian Sausage Soup

  1. This is a quick and easy recipe to create however I don't like that it is created on the hob first as the whole point for me is that you don't have to do that and you don't have as many dishes. I see no reason why you cannot just par boil the pasta (depending on your cooker) and put everything in together except the spinach under a slow cook would make it easier.
  2. Follow the Video
  3. If you prefer full Slow Cooker as opposed the the video method I would pop all the ingredients into your cooker (not the Spinach) and cook on low for 8 hours. In this case the preparation time would be greatly reduced.

Ingredients you will need are:

  • 1 Yellow Onion Chopped
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1lb ground Italian Sausage
  • 15 oz rinsed cannellini beans
  • 29 oz Italian stewed tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups of Rotini pasta (pasta twists)
  • 2 cups of baby spinach
  • 28oz chicken broth

The Italian Slow Cooker Extra Effort Recipes

There is a fantastic range or recipes for slow cooking such as pasta sauces soups, grains, risotto, polenta, grains, seafood, vegetables, chicken, turkey, beef, veal, eggs, pork, lamb and many tasty desserts. Due to the range of foods some do require more preparation than others so you can't always just throw it in. I would only do these when I was about or had more time.

Remember though even if it says high you can cook things longer on a low setting your slow cooker should tell you the timings, usually about 8 hours if there is meat that needs to be thoroughly cooked.
