Not Your Average Jello Shot Recipes

Updated on September 6, 2012

Yes, Jell-O Shots Can Be Gourmet, or at Least a Little Fancier

When you think of Jell-O Shots, you are probably thinking of tiny little cups full of jello and vodka that no one can dislodge with any amount of grace. Jello shots always sound like so much fun, but they are such a pain and most of the time they don't even taste good. Really what's the point?

Well, I stumbled upon a blog called the Jelly Shot Test Kitchen that gives the undignified jello shot a makeover. Her Jell-O shot recipes are based on actual adult drinks that taste very much like their liquid counterpart. She also uses molds and garnishes to make them elegant enough to serve at a dinner party. Who would have thought jello shots could be so fancy?

Blogger Michelle Palm has a jell-o shot recipe book, snag it on Amazon: Jelly Shot Test Kitchen: Jell-ing Classic Cocktails-One Drink at a Time.

Grown Up Jello Shots

Jell-O Shots are no longer just for college frat parties. Skip the flavored gelatin and vodka recipes for these gourmet cocktail jelly shots. Margaritas, Martinis or even a Sangria jell-o shot.

Presentation is a Key Ingredient

Think of creative ways to serve jello shots, like on a cucumber or in a mini muffin cup liner.

Your average jello shot is made in little cups that are a big pain to remove the jello from. Try instead making them in molds or cutting them with cookie cutters, then present them on mini muffin cup liners, cucumber slices (shown above), inside an actual shot glass, or even little appetizer plates. You can also get creative with garnishes, anything from colored sugar and sprinkles to orange or lime zest.

You can get many of Michelle Palm's great Jelly Shot recipes from her blog, but what's handier than having the actual recipe book in your collection. The photography is really beautiful making this a fun book to leave out as a conversation piece.

Molds Make Jell-O Shots Easier to Eat

Find a fun mold to make uniform stand alone jell-o shots. Silicone molds work beautifully with gelatin, but you will want to spray a little cooking oil or PAM and wipe away excess to ensure nothing sticks.

I'm almost finished with one of my lenses and I ran across yours. I'd love to feature it for some additional info on my lens. Great job and interesting info!

Love the lens! Jello shots are the best but you have to be careful you don't get too trashed.

What great idea! I love the idea of a sangria jello shot, but a mojito one would be awesome, too!

They had those sparkling jellos a few years back...I wonder if you could make a champagne jello shot? Nice ideas, I love the idea of serving them on cucumber slices. Thanks for sharing these.
