Meltaway Butter Mint Candy

Updated on December 12, 2016

These Buttermints will melt in your mouth!

Homemade Meltaway Mints--my favorite nibble at showers and weddings. Surely, this candy is easy to make! At least I hope they are! The glittering sugar covering on these mints just calls to me across reception halls and dining-rooms. So, I am wondering, how did I not have these at my daughter's wedding?

If you keep scrolling down, you will find several recipes for party mints that I found on the web. I also have a melt-a-way mint candy that you could purchase on Amazon. Weather you choose to make homemade mint candies or buy them ready made, you will satisfy your craving for melty, smooth mints using my recommendations.

The meltaway heart mints shown here were found using a Creative Commons Search on Flickr from user David Hepworth. I enhanced it using PicMonkey.com.

Make Mints for the Holidays - Valentine's Day is a good one!

Meltaway Butter Mints would make a wonderful Homemade Gift during the Holidays. If you find a perfect recipe, you might make this a holiday tradition. Maybe during Thanksgiving one could get the children to help make these candies for gift giving. I am all about making mints a family project.

Keep scrolling down for more essential items for making these melt in your mouth mints.

Soft Mint Meltaway recipes: - They will melt in your mouth!

I have never made melt away mints, but I want to! Oh, yes I do. Most all of these recipes state that the mints can be frozen. Nice feature because you can keep some on hand for "after dinner" or to give as gifts.

Below you will find links to the most appealing melt-a-way candy recipes I have found.

However, I did find a winning tutorial for the mint meltaways at the blog, Skip to My Lou! There is a big arrow link further down the page that will help you find this tutorial on the web.

  • Peppermint Candy Mints on Cooks.com.

This recipe uses a southern staple, light Karo Syrup. For the rest of the world, this is light corn syrup.

  • Homemade Mints on Cooks.com.

This recipe sounds wonderful as it includes butter, cream and powdered sugar.

No Karo involved. Recipe suggests dipping candy in sugar before putting in a mold.

  • Party or Wedding Mint Candy

This recipe only uses cream cheese, no butter. The title makes me think that this is the candy I might be looking for.

  • Wedding Mints

NINE recipes on this page. Oh, so many to try.

This website recommends using peppermint oil (see product below) over just "flavoring".

This site also has several other recipes that look worth trying. You need to scroll down the page to find "Secret Ingredient Cream Cheese Mints".

  • Butter Mints Recipe from "Neverending Yarn" looks like it would be a good recipe to try. The ingredients include milk, a clear vanilla and a clear butter flavoring. Excellent photos, too.

Two essentials for making meltaway buttermints: - Flavor, color and shape your homemade candy

Oil seems to be the best way to add flavor to a meltaway mint candy. The shown below had the highest reviews from Amazon customers.

Wilton has superior products for making candy of all kinds. Feel free to buy heart shaped ones while you are here. It will melt my heart if you do. These hearts can be used for more than just a wedding or a shower! Obviously, Valentine's Day is one other occasion. Thanks.

You must have a good food coloring for your homemade mints:

Butter Mints: see how to make one version of this recipe - A perfect candy to make with the grandchildren.

Not just for the holidays, butter mints are great after dinner, or put in a cute glass container to take as a hostess gift. This cook recommends that you keep the ingredients for this delightful candy on hand so you can be ready to make butter-mints at a moment's notice. I know that my grandchildren love to help me make stuff to eat, especially sweet stuff!

Be sure to do your research and read reviews of any product before you make a purchase.

Debate: Meltaway Mints at a Wedding or Shower?

I could only find 1 image on Creative Commons for homemade butter mints. Is that because making this candy is out of style? I, for one, sure hope not! I plan to attend many more showers and weddings in the future and look forward to having my mints!

Do you think having handmade candy mints at a wedding or shower is old fashioned (out of style)?

It most certainly is!

It most certainly is!

I don't know that it's out of style as much as people are so short on time today. There is so much that goes into organising a shower, that perhaps making the mints is the last thing people can find to do, even if it might be on their list. I love melt away butter mints. That's why I visited your lens :). I'm not sure when you state "old fashioned" do you mean out-of-style or preserving a tradition. So, I'm not sure how to vote. I'll follow CCGAL in assuming old fashioned is a tradition done for many years. At Italian weddings, we have an old tradition of giving five Jordan almonds to each guest, each almond signifies five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. These almonds decorate each place setting as favours, tucked into tulle bags called "bomboniere", and are personalised with the couple's names and wedding date. I have sat with family and wrapped hundreds of bomboniere :).

And I adore old fashioned! I think home made things at a wedding or shower brings a touch of loving kindness that makes everyone feel loved and cherished. I will take home made anything over store bought, any day of the week.

    It most certainly is not!

I say old-fashioned, make-it-yourself is a good way to go if you don't want to end up deep in debt for the wedding.

I love the idea. Recently went to a wedding and the favors were clear glass tea light holders with mints wrapped inside. Twice the fun. ~blessed~

I think it's a lovely idea. Homemade is always appreciated at any of the showers I have put on or attended.

No I think its great to have home made things it is more personal

I've made mints before, and it's certainly superior to the store-bought kind, but I'd never heard of Meltaway Mints or butter mints. I guess I'll have to try making a batch!

We live in the in North Idaho, and have few choices of where to shop. We have a Co-Op, where I have only healthy choices; and we have a grocery called Winco, where we can purchase in bulk bins. I have to pass by the Smooth and Melty Mints at Winco, and refrain from getting a bag, as I love these mints! The bulk bins have the name brands, so I can buy the best tasting.
