moringa oleifera research

Updated on May 7, 2016

Moringa Oleifera is the miracle tree. My first encounter with Moringa Oleifera was on April 12, 2011. How did it happen? My fiancé and I were walking down the street in Makurdi, Benue State, when suddenly, she saw the beautiful plant. It caught her attention and she suddenly stopped. With a fixed gaze, she began to check to see if it was the Moringa Oleifera plant she had known before. She is a naturopath by training and was taught about this wonderful plant, Moringa Oleifera. Curiously, she moved closer to see if it was Moringa Oleifera or some other plant that looks like it. She inquired from the children who definitely did not know anything about it.

Meanwhile the owner of the plant, who is growing them for research purposes sat inside his NGO office and was staring at us. To satisfy our curiosity, he called us into office and enquired to know why we were attracted to his wonder plant Moringa Oleifera. After introducing ourselves and began to talk about this great tree, Moringa Oleifera. This was the first time ever that I would hear the name Moringa Oleifera.

The researcher then began to tell us about the usefulness of Moringa Oleifera. He mentioned that it is one of the trees he is working on among two. The others are castor and Jatropha, which are all bio diesel, commercial plants of great international value. This made me to become all the more interested in this miracle tree, Moringa Oleifera, as it is widely know globally. Quickly I went online and searched Google to find out about this plant.

Little did I know that it is found right in my house in my home town. It was several days later when my younger one came to visit from our home town that I asked if he knew my newly discovered, money spinning miracle plant. To my greatest joy, he quickly identified as “JELEGEDE” which is Tiv for Moringa Oleifera. That alone fueled my quest for more knowledge about this plant. Now I write on Moringa Oleifera and it is been published in a paper ‘THE PEOPLES HERALD’, weekly, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

In my research, I have found out amazing facts about Moringa Oleifera. It is known to cure over 300 diseases in the body. It may also interest you to know that Moringa has

§  7 times the Vitamin C in oranges

§  4 times the Calcium in milk

§  4 times the Vitamin A in carrots

§  2 times the Protein in yoghurt and

§  3 times the Potassium in bananas

Here are a few more facts about Moringa. A single Moringa tree can provide leaf for nutrition, benoil (i.e. Moringa Oleifera oil) for cooking and a healthy, supple skin. Seed cake from the seed of Moringa Oleifera is used for water purification and wood to build shelter and keep you warm. I have decided that I will plant 1000 Moringa Oleifera plants this year!
