Having a childhood cyst overdosed with Penicillin made Stephen hyper allergic. From this he developed a keen interest in eating for health.

Getting The Ingredients Together

What Started Me On Green Smoothies?

After we bought our Vitamix blender which we splashed for after buying and reading "Eat To Live" by Joel Fuhrman M.D. we also received the Vitamix cookbook and a DVD of recipes. Both the cookbook and the Vitamix recipe book advocated Green Smoothies as a great way to increase our intake of essential vitamins and minerals.

They also have the benefit of helping our little ones to eat greens in a manner where they may not even notice that they are in there. The main ingredient used in these smoothies is a banana, followed by a cup of berries of your favorite type, and an orange plus a 1/2 cup or so of greens (Kale, Spinach etc.) and about 2/3 cup of Almond, Soy ar Flax milk. This recipe results in a very thick sticky smoothie.

We started experimenting with new recipes and combinations and eventually arrived at the recipe given here. This is thinner and really well balanced flavor wise. You can taste every ingredient if you savor it in your mouth long enough.

Time To Prepare

  • Prep time: 5 min
  • Cook time: 1 min
  • Ready in: 6 min
  • Yields: 2

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Almond, Soy or Flax Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Kale (Frozen or fresh)
  • 1 Cup Black Cherries (Frozen)
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Orange peeled and pith removed
  • 1 Honey Crisp Apple peeled cored and skin removed
  • 1 Key Lime juiced
  • 1 Small Handful Cranberries (Frozen)
  • 1 Small Handful Goji Berries
  • 1 Tbs Flax seed

Instructions

  1. Halve the Key Lime and juice it.
  2. Drop all ingredients into a high powered blender (We use a Vitamix 1732 VS Turbo blend).
  3. Switch blender to Variable and Turn on.
  4. Turn dial gradually from 1 to 10
  5. Flip switch to High
  6. Blend for 45 seconds or until liquid is smooth and uniform (Any longer and it will start to heat up).
  7. If using fresh produce not frozen add ice cubes to taste and reduce milk accordingly.
  8. Switch back to Variable
  9. Turn dial from 10 to 1 and turn off the blender.
  10. Pour into two glasses and enjoy.

What Do The Cooks Think?

5 stars from 1 rating of My Favorite Green Smoothie

The Best Smoothie Maker Ever?

If you are serious about making green smoothies for your family and like us want to make them every day or every other day then your first requirement is going to be a super fast blender.

After reviewing them on-line and in books about how to make them two brands stood out Blendtec and Vitamix. After watching them in action and seeing people actually using them on Youtube etc. We made our choice and this is the blender we use. It has been fantastic!

The Vitamix comes with a tamper and it is safe to use for smoothies, and peanut butter etc. Despite the claims of other blender makers the tamper is needed for smoothies as frozen fruit will tend to float and the action of the blades throws things upwards. This means that without the tamper things may not get blended in thoroughly.

In tests we found that other blenders will often leave items unblended. Using the tamper ensures this is never the case. Just ensure that you remove the center plug from the lid and leave the lid in place when using the tamper.

This blender is faster and more powerful than those you see in the local store. You will need one like this if you want to make nut butters as well as smoothies. It will last you for life. We use ours at least 3 times every day!

Our Inspiration To A Healthier Life Style

I had been looking on-line trying to find a healthier way to eat. I had been diagnosed with hyper tension and my doctor suggested that eating correctly was a better way of resolving this problem than taking any of the drugs on the market, which all have potentially harmful side effects.

This was the cookbook I settled on and the results in improved health are amazing.

It is, and I probably do in my freezer, but at minus 12 C I think I will wait for a bit more sunshine! Thank you for dropping by.

@QuiltFinger: There I was thinking the fruit mix up was to fool the kids! LOL. Actually if you keep the quantities low relative to the fruit he probably would not be aware it was there. I now love eating greens this way

MMM! I love kale. I would have never thought I'd say that. We have the Nutribullet blender, and my husband just hates the green drinks. I think the berries and sweet good stuff would make it a bit more palatable to him.

@Lynn Klobuchar: They are not cheap, but are so much better than the cheap blenders. We decided to dive in and have used ours at least 3 times everyday since we had it. Blending breaks up the cells of the plants and fruits so they are easier to digest. Celiacs, Diabetics and Vegans often use them as the benefits to the system help the immune system to fight the diseases. We found Joel Fuhrman M.D 's comments on all this extremely interesting.

I really think you would find it helpful in the longer term, once you feel ready to try.

This sounds delicious. I have toyed with the idea of getting one of these, maybe after my body adjusts to the gluten free thing. Sometimes too much fiber all at once is ... difficult, but it is getting better. Thanks for the information.
