Pita - A Delicious Versatile Flat Bread

Over the last several years, pita bread has become a very popular alternative to sliced bread. When I was in grade school, my peers were always interested in what I had for lunch since they had never really seen anyone eating pita bread before. Today, everyone is familiar with this delicious flatbread. Pita is available in many different sizes, thicknesses and flavors and can be prepared so many different ways. I have put together what I think are the top 10 uses for this scrumptuous middle eastern staple.

Different Types of Pita Bread

From mini pitas for hors d'oeuvres to large pita to make pizza

There are about 4 different sizes and at least 3 different thicknesses of pita bread ranging from mini to pocket to the larger loaves. All are good choices for making sandwiches and the medium to thicker ones are the best for toasting to eat with cheese, peanut butter or other toppings. Pita stays fresh in the fridge for a few days and can also be frozen for much longer. Can be easily defrosted in the microwave and then popped into the toaster oven.

As far as calories go, one whole medium size thick pita has approximately the same amount of calories as two pieces of multi grain sliced bread. There are some that are lower in calories and it's best to check on the package prior to purchasing.

No.1 and the most well known - Making Sandwiches

Pita Bread Sandwiches are great to perk the lunch box blues!

Of course the most obvious uses for pita bread is to make a sandwich. Slice it in half, open it up and insert your favorite filling and there you have it. Or alternatively, put the filling between the two silces and heat it up using a sandwich press. My favorite pita bread sandwich is a mixture of smoked ham, mild or hot hungarian salami, a slice of cheddar or swiss cheese and a piece of lettuce prepared with either mustard or mayonnaise or both. Makes a great sandwich for kids lunches as, unlike sliced bread which may get squashed, pita is already flat so hopefully the chances are less of finding it at the bottom of their schoolbag a few days later!

No. 2 - Toasted Pita Bread - Delicious!

The next best thing to potato chips without the calories!

If you are using a thin pita you have the option of opening the bread into 2 pieces or leaving them whole. Butter the bread before toasting is recommended , it is easier and tastes better as the butter melts into the bread.

Eat with your favorite topping such as yogurt cheese , tuma cheese ,peanut butter or whatever else you like.

No. 3 - Mini- pita bread appetizer sandwiches

Impress your guests with these delicious mini-pita loaves

Looking for finger foods? Appetizer sandwiches made with mini pita bread make delicious hors d'oeuvres. These little sandwiches can be prepared using egg salad, chicken salad, or tofu salad to name just a few. You can even cut the bread in half and stuff it that way too.

No. 4 - Toasted Pita Chips

Pita Chips are baked not fried

Have you ever tried pita chips? This recipe is quick and easy to prepare and can be used with many different dips. It is a lot healthier than potato chips and taste even better!

Brush bread with olive or vegetable oil. Serve plain or sprinkle with your favorite herb mix or top with sesame seeds. In this picture the mini pita loaves are served with fresh homemade hummus. Yum!

No. 5 - Pita Bread Croutons

Toasted pita bread makes delicious croutons!

If you always have pita bread on hand like we do, you can spice up your salad in a jiff! Toasted pita bread tastes great in salad!

Cut pita bread into small pieces, toast it and then toss it right before adding the dressing into your favorite salad. Here is a trick to keep the bread from turning soggy: Deep fry the pita bread pieces before adding them to your salad. They will stay nice and crunchy. If you find it is too much work., toasted pita can be prepared in advance and kept out in a bread basket, or in a plastic bag in the fridge or freezer!

Great tip and even more delicious! Herbed- flavored pita bread croutons. Before toasting the pita bread, spread either butter, margarine or olive oil all over the bread. Sprinkle your choice of herb such as oregano, thyme or basil. Toast for approximately 5 mins at 350F. Add to salad.

No. 6 - Wrap meat in large pita to keep it moist

The meat drippings will add flavor to the bread

Pita bread has many uses! It can prevent your sucullant shish or chicken kabob from drying out! When I buy a cooked chicken from my favorite middle eastern grocery store, they always wrap it in pita. The pita bread absorbs the flavor of the meat. Doing this does get the bread a little on the soggy side but there is an easy solution to this. I know that it is tempting to throw the bread away, but your grandmother would really frown upon that! Pop it in the toaster as is to dry it out and the bread tastes absolutely delicious!

No. 7 - Mini - pizzas

Don't have pizza dough on hand? No problem, use pita bread!

This recipe is always a hit with family and friends. It is prepared using mini pita bread. So easy to make, just put about 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce, fresh tomatoes, or Italian imported canned tomatoes on each mini pita followed by the cheese. You can also add any other topping of your choice and it will taste even better!

No. 8 Pita wrap sandwiches

Lower in calories than traditional white bread

Pita wraps like tortilla wraps are more and more popular. Add any topping you like, dress it up with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and voilà! Makes an easy lunch on the go!

No. 10- Breadcrumbs

Pita bread breadcrumbs can be made plain or seasoned

Plain toasted pita bread can remain at room temperature for weeks. Why not convert it into breadcrumbs? Just grind it in a food processor for a minute or two and then grind again in a coffee mill which will reduce it to fine bread crumbs.       I make pita chips by cutting pita in to wedges then toss them in olive oil - next sprinkle with Italian/garlic spices and crisp in toaster oven then let cool a bit. Tasty lens, blessed!

      A delicious lens! I enjoy tearing off pieces of fresh pita and scooping up a healthy daub of hommus. Excellent as a side dish to accompany chicken shawarma...stuffed grapeleaves...mujadara....fattoush. Mmmm. Making myself very hungry. :)
