This is my go-to recipe when I want hot, delicious, satisfying comfort food! I'm sure you will you enjoy it as much as we do.
The whole dinner can be done in a traditional oven roaster, a Nesco-type electric roaster, even a crockpot. All you need is some method of slow cooking. Add some mashed or baked potatoes and you have your meal.
The aroma will fill your house with wonderfulness! The ingredents are inexpensive and easily located everywhere.

Food Love From Mom
You know that wonderful feeling when you show up at Mom's house for Sunday dinner, and the aromas of your favorite meal fill the air? This baked steak with vegetables and a savory mushroom gravy was that meal for me at my Mom's. To me very few things smell more delicious cooking! My late mom Izzy was the best cook in the world but she kept things very basic and simple - the art of true country cooking. She baked this dinner in a regular roaster in the oven, and it was absolute heaven.
This was her favorite meal to cook, I think... her signature dinner. I know it was my favorite one to EAT! My recipe builds on her original recipe. Hers was plain steak, onions, and mushroom soup. I think my addition of veggies and seasonings take it to a different level. Not better; just different.
For years I did this as she did in a small roaster in the regular oven. Nowadays, I tend to like preparing it in my Nesco roaster. Either way, it's sure to get applause from everyone around your dinner table!
Baked Mushroom Steak & Veggie Recipe
It's a One-Pot Dinner!
You will need:
- 4-6 skillet steaks, round steak, chuck steak, sirloin, whatever your pleasure... Not cube steaks because they will totally fall apart.
- Olive Oil
- 1 bag Mirepoix blend frozen veggies (Or 1 cup each chopped green pepper, celery, and onion)
- Red wine vinegar
- 1 pkg beef stew seasonoing mix (optional)
- 1 large can Cream of Mushroom soup
In your electric roaster, crockpot or traditional roaster, sprinkle about 2 tbsp olive oil. Add frozen vegetables and begin to stir fry them at 350 until just translucent, a few minutes. Place steaks in on top of veggies. Sprinkle steak with red wine vinegar, salt and pepper.
When mixture is completely hot, add 1 cup of water, the Cream of Mushroom soup, and about 1/2 pkg of the beef stew seasoning. Save the rest for another meal. Stir sauce thoroughly until well blended. Cover and reduce heat to 275. Bake for about 2.5 hours or until meat is very tender. Add additional water if necessary toward end of cooking time.
Instead of the Mushroom Soup, stir in the following:
- 1 can Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Garlic
- 1 whole additional chopped bell pepper
This will make a more traditional smothered steak dinner.
My favorite is to serve this over mashed or baked potatoes, but you could also do rice, quinoa, noodles, etc.
