what are simple syrups

simple syrups are a mixture of an equal amount of sugar and water boiled together to create a very liquid syrup that serves several different purposes. sometime they are used on cake layers to keep them soft and to add flavours, or they can be the base for puddings and custards, or create the flavours for drinks and shaved ice. in any case, they are a great way to infuse many desserts and dishes with a little extra flavour!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz sugar
  • 8 fl oz water

Instructions

  1. 1) combine sugar and water in a saucepan and, stirring, bring the water to a boil, stirring and boiling until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. 2) store in a container and refridgerate until you wish to use it.

coffee simple syrup - makes 16 fl oz

  • 8 oz sugar
  • 8 fl oz water
  • 1/2 oz ground coffee or expresso

Instructions

  1. 1) combine sugar and water in a sauce pan and, stirring, bring the water to a boil.
  2. 2) add the ground coffee to the water, then take th epan off the stove and let sit for 20 minutes away from teh heat
  3. 3) strain the syrup to remove any grounds left over and store the strained syrup in a container in teh fridge until ready to use.

Liqueur flavoured simple syrup - makes 16 fl oz

  • 8 oz sugar
  • 8 oz water
  • 2 fl oz of your desired liqueur for flavouring.

Instructions

  1. 1) bring water and sugar to a boil on the stove, sirring constantly until dissolved.
  2. 2) when the sugar has dissolved completely, remove from the stove and let cool completely.
  3. 3) when the syrup has completely cooled, stir in the liqueuer, and store in the fridge until ready to use.

vanilla simple syrup

  • 8 oz sugar
  • 8 fl oz water
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • split and scraped

Instructions

  1. 1) bring water and sugar to a boil on the stove, stirring constantly until dissolved.
  2. 2) when the sugar has dissolved completely, add the split vanilla beans and it's scrapping to the syrup
  3. 3) remove pan from heat, and let stand for 20 minutes, before straining the syrup into a container to store in the fridge until it's ready to use.
