Ways to Make Snow-themed Cup cakes or Cakes

Snowflake cakes and cupcakes can be created in many different ways. They can also be made in different flavors, so you don't have to be limited to white cake and frosting for a snow flurry theme (although yellow cake or frosting might be tacky).

A very easy way to decorate a snow-themed treats are to follow the example in the image to the right. A small cookie snowball has been added to a chocolate cake and frosting along with a few edible snowy sugar sprinkles.

Other easy ways to decorate is by using snow-themed wrappers or paper cups. Snowflakes on the paper or wrapper make even plain cupcakes festive.

Edible snow-like sprinkles or flakes made from royal icing or white chocolate are a quick way to decorate a plain mini cake. Even non-edible snowflake toppers (paper, plastic, ornaments, glitter) can be added to create a winter wonderland theme. Be sure to point out that they are decorative, not edible!

Pre-shaped mini and cake pans and molds are a fun and simple way to bake a snowy dessert.

Snow-themed Cake with Royal Icing Snowy flakes

One very popular method of decorating snow-themed cakes or cupcakes is with edible snow flakes made out of white icing.

With a bit of practice, a bit of patience and directions from Martha Stewart, snowflakes can be make by piping white icing into snowy shapes. She even has a printable template to follow for piping the icing.

Stephanie Patag of Blisstree offers some very helpful tips on turning royal icing snowy flakes in her article on that include "scotch tape to tape down the design and parchment onto your work surface, to prevent slipping" and how important it is to have "a small paintbrush in a bowl of water, for touching up any mistakes or rough spots."

Another very helpful tip was to be sure to make more flakes that you need to allow for breakage, or perhaps create a design, like a submerged flake that would allow you to even use the broken ones.

Take a look at the video instructions on "How to Make Snowflake Royal Icing" and read a few of the articles to get started making your own royal icing flakes.

Top Red Velvet Cakes with White Chocolate Flakes

White chocolate can also be used to make piped snowy flakes as seen in the example of the snowy red velvet cupcakes in the image to the right. With these red velvet mini cakes white chocolate flakes and red colored sugar were added to top butter cream frosting to make for very festive holiday treats.

Like the white icing snowy flakes, white chocolate chips or white chocolate bars can be turned into decorative snowy flakes. Yummymummy shows how in the blog post on "Cup cakes Topped with White Chocolate Snow flakes."

To make the flakes all it takes is some white chocolate, a pastry bag with #4 tip (or a zip lock bag with a small hole), a pattern or template and some wax paper and a bit of patience.

Another very helpful tip was to be sure to make more flakes that you need to allow for breakage, or finding a way to even use the broken ones to decorate.
