Make Fresh Bread at Home with Easy Soda Bread Recipes

Bread is one of my favorite treats to have at any meal whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Breads such as Cinnamon Oatmeal Soda Bread and Peanut Butter Soda Bread are so easy to make and enjoy with little fuss.

There are many variations to keep the mix interesting and only a few basic ingredients are needed. You will enjoy the heartiness of these breads with a crispy crust, yet moist and flavorful on the inside.

Soda Bread is traditionally served

with butter and a hot cup of tea.

A sweet and delicious bread is so good with a smear of butter or cream cheese. This recipe for Cinnamon Oatmeal Soda Bread is the best morning breakfast bread, yet also a nice companion for a lunch or dinner soup.

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbls sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • melted butter and oats (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Grease a 9X5X3 loaf pan, set aside.
  3. In a large bowl mix together first six ingredients.
  4. In another bowl stir together remaining ingredients (except for optional ingredients).
  5. Add to flour mixture until thoroughly combined.
  6. Pour into prepared pan.
  7. Brush top with additional butter and sprinkle with oats, if desired.
  8. Bake 45 minutes or until lightly browned.

Whole Wheat Soda Bread

A contemporary version of Irish soda bread with a healthy twist. If you don't finish the loaf it makes a delicious toast the next day!

Serves: Makes 1 loaf


  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbls molasses


  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Grease a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
  3. In a large bowl combine dry ingredients.
  4. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
  5. If too wet, add more flour.
  6. Place dough into loaf pan and bake 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool and slice.

Peanut Butter Soda Bread

A unique and tasty soda bread recipe that is so good with jelly or preserves.

Serves: Makes 1 loaf


  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup regular oats
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 tbls honey
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup currants

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Grease a large baking sheet.
  3. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  4. In a large mixer bowl combine peanut butter and honey.
  5. Slowly add buttermilk until mixture is smooth.
  6. Add to dry mix along with currants and mix well.
  7. Move dough to baking sheet and shape into a round loaf.
  8. Cut a cross deep tinto the top.
  9. Bake for 35 minutes or until brown and top makes a hollow sound when tapped.
