A Recipe for Sour Broccoli

I found this recipe for sour broccoli in an old church cookbook and was delighted to find it fits beautifully with the Wahls diet. I immediately wanted to add it here at Squidoo for my collection of Wahls Diet recipes. This is a delicious, tart way to eat broccoli and I think you will enjoy it.

I do not know the history of this recipe. It was submitted to the cookbook of international recipes by a lady named Alice Metry. The ethnicity of Ms. Metry's recipes is not noted, but the dish is clearly Middle Eastern in origin.

I found this sour broccoli recipe in the cookbook of St. Michael Orthodox Church in Louisville, Kentucky, published in 1991.

Sour Broccoli Recipe

This is a very easy recipe for sour broccoli.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch organic broccoli
  • 1 or 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 3/4 cup of olive oil
  • 1/4 cup of lemon juice

Instructions

  1. 1. Wash the broccoli and steam 10 minutes or until tender.
  2. 2. While broccoli is cooking, process the garlic and salt in a food processor using the steel blades. Then, with the processor still running, add the oil and process. Then add the lemon juice and continue to process.
  3. 3. When broccoli is tender, remove it to a serving dish and pour the lemon-garlic-oil mixture over the cook vegetable.

Variation on this Sour Broccoli Recipe

Try the lemon-oil dressing on other steamed vegetables.

Suggestions: Spinach, squash, asparagus, green beans, cabbage, cauliflower, endive, chicory or dandelion greens.

      I like broccoli (we even had some growing in the yard last year, mom brought them from Italy) and I sure think they would be better with the lemon juice.

      Love broccoli and prefer sour taste over sweet, so this vegetable recipe looks like I gotta give it a try. :)

      So I read this but was surprised to see the ingredients. Is the lemon the primary contributor to it being "sour broccoli"? I may try this but without doing the blender step and using ground organic garlic powder instead - be interesting to see if it still comes out w/same flavor?

      I do like a little dressing like a honey-mustard on my broccoli so this might suit me fine.

      First time ever I read about sour broccoli. I don't think it's for me though.
