Collecting Starbucks Coffee Mugs: 1994 to 2012

Updated on November 17, 2012

Welcome to my page about Collecting Starbucks Mugs!

This page is devoted to you, the Starbucks collector!

I love Starbucks mugs - collectible Starbucks Coffee city mugs, travel coffee cups, hand painted mugs, holiday mugs, and more!

My best find was this Venezia Starbucks mug from Venice, Italy! I found it in a Seattle thrift store and it was in perfect condition!

I like to shop on Ebay for Starbucks city mugs from around the world, and on this page I'll show you how I find some of my best deals.

If you have your own collection, be sure to tell me about it in the guestbook! I love seeing new mugs!

Scroll down to see new 2012 Starbucks Mugs! Page Updated 5/20/2012

WHY Starbucks CITY mugs are sooo valuable!

The sky-high prices that people will pay for some of the Starbucks city mugs reflect the fact that you can only buy a Starbucks city mug in its home city....

Rarity drives the price up! Are you going to travel the world to complete your collection or are you going to do some Ebay buying?

Timeline of Starbucks Mugs Produced

There have been so many mugs produced, often times more than one mug for each city, that collectors often classify them by year and type of image on the cup (i.e. collage, photo, skyline, architecture, etc), as well as size.

  • 1994-1995 Icon City Series
  • 1994-? International Style Cities
  • 1999-2001 Collage Series
  • 1997 States of Bean Series
  • 2002-2003 US "Italian Romance" Series (Valentine's Day)
  • 2003 Christmas Ornament (Miniature) Skyline City Mugs
  • 2002-2003 Skyline Series
  • 2004 City Scenes (Mini cups, too)
  • 2005 Destination Series (featuring 25 American Cities)
  • 2005 Photo Series, Featuring London & other UK cities
  • 2006 Architecture Series
  • 2007 Parks Series
  • 2008 Icon Global Mugs

Starbucks City Mugs & Crazy Selling Prices

Actual sale prices on Ebay! (auctions & buy-it-now)

Here is a list of some of the top-selling auctions:

  • FIRENZE ITALIAN EDITION II Starbucks Coffee mug ($501)

  • 1994 New Orleans City Mug ($306) (brand new, sold for $361 in 2011!)

  • NYC Starbucks Coffee Mug featuring yellow taxi cabs ($99)

  • Starbucks Skyline Seattle Headquarters Coffee Mug ($87)

  • Mt Rushmore Coffee Mug ($61)

  • 1994 Santa Barbara 20oz Coffee Mug ($78)

  • Bucharest, Romania Coffee Mug ($58)

  • 1994 Aachen City Coffee Mug ($237)

  • 2003 Tuscany Italian Edition II ($99)

  • 2006 Sao Paulo Coffee Mug ($69)

  • 2008 Veracruz Icon Series Coffee Mug ($62)

  • 2002 Kuwait City Mug ($59)

Prices vary widely (and wildly!) on some of the city mugs. In 2004, a woman said she would pay $1000 for the Minneapolis city mug. Since then, there have been new Minneapolis mugs produced, but perhaps if you have the first original Minneapolis city mug you might be able to make some big money! In fact, I read that a Minneapolis mug sold for $2000. If I see it happen with my own eyes I will be sure to update this page.

Starbucks City Mugs - Rare Collectible Ones from 1994!

The first Starbucks mugs were produced in 1994. Here are a few of the ones currently up on auction.

To Aimee: How to Determine the Value of your Starbucks Mugs

Learn how to sell your Starbucks Mugs for Top Dollar!

Hi Aimee,

Thanks for visiting my site!

Determining the value of a Starbucks mug is not a science. Basically, how much you can sell your mug for depends on:

- How rare is your mug?

- What is the condition of your mug?

- How long are you willing to wait to sell it?

- How desirable is your mug?

Mugs that are in new or like new condition will sell for more than those with scratches or other problems. If the mug has its original box or tags then that is even better.

If your mug is extremely rare and desirable, then you have a good chance of getting a good price for it.

If you put it up on auction, then the price you get is somewhat up to chance. Who will see it while it's up on auction?

To find out if your Starbucks mug has sold before, go to Ebay's advanced search and search completed listings. However, this only goes back a few weeks. I also use Terapeak which searches back a whole year but that's a subscription service. (And worth every penny if you sell much on ebay!)

Does your Washington DC mug hold 1 GALLON? Someone sold a Giant San Diego coffee mug that holds one gallon for $136 on Ebay.

I've sold a few blue glass mugs. I think I sold them for around $15 each.. They took awhile to sell, and they sold to people in Europe. I think there are lots of different kinds of blue glass mugs so you'll have to look up which ones you have.

I hope this helps!

Think of your Starbucks Collection as an investment

Buy Low, Sell High!

Forbes magazine had an article about things to invest in.. given the possibility of hyperinflation, paper money might decline in value. One of the article's suggestions was "trinkets"....

I think Starbucks mugs might be just the right kind of trinket to invest in. They have become cheaper on ebay recently, and when something is cheap it is a good idea to buy.

BUY LOW, SELL HIGH!

There are many devoted collectors out there, including completists.. If Starbucks continues the decline, their mugs will likely remain valuable over the long haul.

Each city mug was only sold in the city it represents, so there is a limited supply of them.

Jump Start Your Collection

Here are a few Ebay auctions for LOTS of mugs... You can buy a whole lot of mugs all at one time. A great way to begin your collection!

I got a Starbucks mug for Christmas last year and it's immense. It can hold two whole cups of coffee (more than I could drink in one go). Although it's a great size for hot choc and marshmellows.

I almost choked on my coffee when I discovered that the very one I'm drinking out of right now is listed for $99 on eBay - I better put it away quick in a safe place before I break it! I would love to know what it is worth. It is is very good condition outside, but obviously a bit discolored on the inside due to the dirt. New here! I'm in Seattle and began with the City mugs back in '94, so my collection is of the originals. I have about 50 or so, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to part with them. They have never seen a drop of coffee in them and were only ever for display/collecting. Do I part them out individually? Do I put them in regional groups? Or do I put a price on the whole lot and just see what happens? I'd like to find out which are the most rare or sought after. Is there a site that ranks the value of each City mug? Like a common Seattle Space Needle mug may be a 2, but maybe one of the 2 New Orleans or Minneapolis mugs would be a 10? Also ... I have issues #1 and #2 of Joe Magazine, and the premiere issue has the letter to the partners from Howard Shultz still perfectly attached to the inside cover. Anyone?

        Aloha -

I have what may - or may not - be an original Starbucks mug/tumbler. It has the brown cigar-band logo and seems to fit what the original tumblers looked like.

I was wondering if there was someone I could send pictures to who could confirm whether it is or not.

        Thanks

I have a clear (i think from the late 90's) mug that I don't know how much it is worth. I also have one of the blue glass mugs from a few years ago. I have a Washington DC LARGE display mug that I have't seen for sale anywhere. How much should I estimate these when I sell them?

I either can't find or wish there was a website with a history of all Starbucks mugs and appr. value, like antiques roadshow for us! :)

        Thanks for any info.

@anonymous: Wow! That is an awesome find! It may have been a display piece or a limited edition collectible. It's very rare. It's probably worth at least $100-$200. Recent sale prices for other 2 Gallon Size Mugs were: Pike Place mug - $262, Vancouver - $160, and Chicago - $150. Good luck!

Hi: Hope someone can help me. I recently purchased a Starbucks City Mug (Collectors Series). The name on the mug is Lisboa. I'm thinking it's actually from Lisbon, Portugal. I plan on listing this on Ebay. Does anyone know anything about this mug - is it rare and can anyone suggest a reasonable starting price on this mug? It is in pristeen unused condition. The last one I saw on Ebay went for for $147.00. That was the starting asking price by the seller and there was only one bid on it. Is this Lisboa mug that hard to find? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

@anonymous: The 1994 Lisboa Starbucks Mug sold for $79 in March. It looks like it was a buy-it-now, so it's possible that the seller underestimated its value. The 2010 Lisboa Mug has sold for about $44 in the past year. The older 1994 one is definitely harder to find. I only saw it on auction once in the past year. To get the highest value for it, you may need to put it on a fixed-price listing and wait for a buyer, or list it more than once on auction until it sells. Don't put it up for less than you'd be happy with :) Good luck on it.

I just bought a 2003 Japan Starbucks mug today at Goodwill for $0.99. I tried looking up info on this particular mug, but can't find any in the eBay current or completed listings. Like new condition. Is this valuable? I stumbled across your blog, but have not seen any photos of this mug online.

@anonymous: If your mug just says Japan on it, rather than the name of a city, it might be pretty rare. I'm not sure what its value is, but it sounds like a good find to me!

I just bought 6 black mugs that say Starbucks Coffee on the side. The inside and out are black and some of the glaze is missing in spots. The bottom is white and unglazed and unmarked. Are these knock offs or errors?

My step-dad's mom has a pumpkin pie recipe and the only way you are supposed to get the "family pumpkin pie recipe" is by having a certain old mug and I have looked high and low in all sorts of old shops to no avail. They did a measurement of the cup and it is equivalent to 1 and 1/3rds cup and some of the family members have just gotten the recipe and use it without the special mug. I wont do that, but it sure is a nice pumpkin pie recipe although it is a tiche on the "heavy" side, don't eat two pieces in a row it sits in your stomach like a lead weight.

I did a lens awhile ago on "Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake" https://hubpages.com/food/PumpkinPieCheesecake that turned out great, without that "heavy feeling" that my step-grandma's "White Mug Pumpkin Pie" recipe has.

        Awesome lens!!!

The city, state and country Starbucks mugs do absolutely nothing for me. They are not attractive at all. Big deal that they are only sold according to the name on the mug. You can easily get them via the Internet. I don't see them holding their value compared to some of the great looking mugs but you never know.

I have collected the Starbuck city mugs too. One cupboard in our kitchen only has the mugs. They are a really great size for my coffee. The fun part for me is my husband and I decided we would buy one in every city we went to. We were surprised when what we thought was a big city didn't have one. I am sad that they stopped making them.

I Love your page! I have a collection of about 25 Starbucks mugs. I have one in particular that I can't find any information about. On the bottom is 2002 Starbucks Barista Collection Series. On the handle is Starbucks. On the cup is starbucks (lowercase) in green and a green mountain background and Seattle in about 1.5-2" raised black letters. It is similar looking to the 1994 City Mug but with Raised Letters. Any help with series?

I so so so want the Italian series simply because I have traveled to Italy, specifically Venice, Tuscany, Rome & Florence, yet the prices are ludicrous.

@anonymous: In November, 2012, it sold for $149 on ebay! Looks like a really rare one. The only other one that sold on Ebay in the last year was in last June and it sold for $55. It looks like if you take good photos and write a good description, and if it's in really good condition, you can start the price pretty high.
