Steam Ovens - The Best Way to Healthy Cooking

Updated on December 13, 2012

Why We Love Steam Ovens

This lens is about a new type of cooking I discovered (or should I say I am still discovering) when we decided to instal a steam oven in our new kitchen. I always wanted to cook and eat healthy, but since having kids, this has become a priority.

In this lens I will share my joy over the steam oven and introduce new ways of healthy cooking and also share some of the recepes for those who already have this oven at home. I hope you enjoy!

Advantages of Steam Oven Cooking

Yummy steamed food

Steaming your food instead of cooking it in water is definitely the healthier and also more delicious choice. If food is cooked in water, all the good vitamins and also the flavours and colors of the food are preserved. Not just vegetables, but also meets and fruits are much more delicious when cooked in a steam oven.

Steam ovens can be used to defrost, cook or reheat food.

All the food that comes out of the oven does not look like on the pictures from the catalogues from different steam oven producers. It can get over or under-done, just like in your regular pot. But I guess this is just one thing you have to master with time and enjoy your healthy and colorful diet.

My main misconsception about the steam ovens was, that the vegetables you cook in it, are always crunchy and they can not be overcooked. This, as I have found out, is not true however :-) So I found all the tips and recipes I find online most helpful. An of course I am sooooo glad that the oven I have (Miele) can "talk" to me about which food I am about to cook and will suggest cooking times and also which dishes to choose, sometimes, which is great too.

Disadvantages of Steam Ovens

The only disadvantage I have found until now is, that you have to be extra careful when opening the oven when the food has finished cooking. Even if you wait for a while, the steam comes rushing out at the top when you open the door and I still heve to remind myself not to stick my head in too soon. It is really dangerous if you forget that and that often happens when you are in a hurry.

Best Steam Oven Recipes

Here are some great links I have found with yummy recipes for steam oven. I will add some of my own later on.

My Favorite Dishes to Prepare in Steam Oven

After owning the steam oven for a few months, I now have gotten used to using it regularly in my daily cooking. I always make dumplings and risotto in there. I also cook fish fillets and mixed vegetables (for sidedish) in my steam oven. I have also tried to cook pasta on few occasions and it turned out great. Lately I have started to bake my own bread. I love that my steam oven offers the "dough rise" programme. It is really convenient and it works great. It impressed me so much, that I almost don't buy any bread, I bake my own :-)

Can't wait to try out some new recipes and will update you on my favorite dishes for the steam oven.

I love my electric steamer, but I had no idea steaming had been taken to this level. I love steamed vegetables, but to steam your meat too, now that is something. Thanks for sharing this lens, it has given me food for though - literally! Would be a total neat thing to have
