Sunday School Snacks for Old Testament Stories

Updated on July 30, 2014

Old Testament Sunday School Snacks

In your Sunday School class, having a snack which is associated with the main Bible story is a great way to reinforce the lesson. On this page you'll find snacks to reinforce Old Testament stories: creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, the tower of Babel, baby Moses, King David, Jonah, and more.

Some of the snacks featured here can be made by the children in their class. Others will be made ahead of time and just eaten and enjoyed during class. Make sure you point out the significance of the snack for maximum learning opportunities.

To help you to have a cooking activity with the children which will go as smoothly as possible, I am also including some tips and practical suggestions. Please feel free to add any of your own further ideas to the guestbook at the end of this article.

Cooking in the Sunday School Class

Do you cook or allow the children to prepare food in your Sunday School class?

See results

If the children will be doing a food activity, make sure you prepare ahead of time

  1. Test out the recipe at home first.
  2. Don't try to be too elaborate, especially when just starting to introduce food preparation to your class.
  3. Make sure that none of the children have allergies to the ingredients you will be using.
  4. Make sure that the activity is appropriate for the age of the children, the number of children, and the amount of time and space you have available. Be warned that the activity will take longer than your trial run at home!
  5. Make sure you have all ingredients and utensils on hand. Some of these recipes will require advance preparation.
  6. Make sure you have a safe cooking environment for the children. Instead of using a stove, you may like to consider purchasing individual heating units for the children to use.
  7. It would be a good idea to have an apron or smock for each child to protect their clothes
  8. Make sure the children know the rules for sanitation and safety before you begin any activity with food.
  9. You may need to ensure that you have a container for each child, or a way for them to transport home any excess food they prepare (unless they will be eating it all in class).
  10. Leave enough time for clean up afterwards.
  11. Consider enlisting the help of one or more responsible helpers.

      1. We had doh-nuts for the kids one week, and taught about how, without Jesus, your life has a hole in the middle of it.

      2. We were teaching on prayer, how the prayers of the saints is a sweet aroma to God, and we did 'instant noodles' (the whole area smelt of chicken noodles)

      3. We made a gigantic banana split in a piece of (cooking paper lined) guttering. A chef came to demonstrate it for us, and talked about the things that had to happen to the banana, cream etc and related them to our christian lives.

      4. We have also done 'fruit toast';

      5. Milk shakes (sometimes God shakes us up, and if we learn from it we 'taste' better)

Crystal Hayward : When ever I tell about the widow and the oil and flour, I take an electric frypan ( I have to find it in my storeroom) and I make scones - flour (with powdered milk mixed into it)(I also lace it with some sugar for the children's tastebuds) oil, and water according to my scone recipe book. We mix it, each child having a stir, I pat it out, and cut into squares. All the time talking through the story again. Rises and cooks great in the frypan. If you have one with a glass lid, its even better.

I'm trying to find recipes to go with my lessons. Like Elisha and the Shumen woman , or Elisha and the widow woman.I think with snacks for the kids when they eat them at other times maybe it will help them remember the story that was taught with it.

I wrapped a crescent roll around a hotdog leaving a small opening for face and baked them. When done you can put mustard drops as eyes if you want to. These represented Baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes
