A Combination of Tomato Pie Recipes

Yummy! I took the Tomato Pie Recipes from three friends and combined "this" from one and "that" from another. The Tomato Pie sure was good and easy to make!Thank you to my friends for sharing their recipes and helpful hints. I needed all the help I could get! I have included these "Helpful Hints for making your Tomato Pie" below the recipe so keep scrolling.I was first introduced to Tomato Pie about 12 years ago so I am really not sure how long the recipe has been around. When I first created this page, it was actually my first time to make it but I had eaten it many times before. Here is the Tomato Pie Recipe as I made it and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Let me know how you make Tomato Pie. Since I first created this page, I have made this Tomato Pie Recipe numerous times and it never fails to be delicious! The good thing about this Tomato Pie Recipe is that you can get creative and add other ingredients, too. I usually make two at a time and share one with a friend (and then wished that I had kept it for myself).Photo: Fresh Tomato Photo made by OhMe in my kitchen. I love to put the fresh tomatoes in the window and watch them ripen. I love to pick them from the garden and eat them when they are warm from the sun.

Tomato Pie Recipe

This Tomato Pie Recipe is a combination of several Tomato Pie recipes that my friends shared. I hope you enjoy. Be creative and share with me your own version in the guestbook below. Thanks

Ingredients for Tomato Pie

  • 4 diced tomatoes
  • 1 deep dish pie crust - 9 inch
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion (You might want to saute the onions first)
  • 1 pkg of Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1 cup mayonaise
  • 1 cup grated cheese (I use Sharp Cheddar)

Instructions

  1. Follow the directions for pre-baking pie crust. Pierce with fork on sides and bottom before baking.
  2. Dice Tomatoes and place on cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt. Allow to sit for a few minutes and then rinse and pat dry. This will keep the pie from being too runny.
  3. Layer 1/2 of diced tomatoes in pie crust and top with 1/2 of diced onions and sprinkle with 1/3 Italian Dressing Mix. Note: We only use 1/2 the pkg of Seasoning Mix just because we don't like it as strong
  4. .Repeat.
  5. Combine the remaining Dressing Mix with Mayo and grated cheese for the icing and spread over the top..
  6. Bake at 350 degrees until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Now you have your recipe, let's get the ingredients together

This Tomato Pie Recipe can be varied so don't be afraid to get creative!

Ingredients for Tomato Pie for your shopping list:

  • 3 or 4 ripe tomatoes diced
  • 1 - 9 in pie shell (of course, you can make your own pie crust if you want to)
  • 1 c finely diced onion or 2 green onions chopped,
  • 1 pkg of Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix or a mixture of your favorite fresh herbs.

Note: Most of the time I just use 1/2 pkg,Salt and Pepper,1 c mayonnaise,1 c grated cheddar cheese. I must say that I like my Tomato Pie better than most I have tasted in restaurants.

Next, you will need to prepare your tomatoes and onions for your Tomato Pie

3 tomatoes if they are large, 4 if they are smaller

While your pie crust is pre-baking,do the following:I always peel my tomatoes before dicingbut this is a personal preference. I have never tried this Tomato Pie Recipe with canned tomatoes but may have to do that this winter. I think it would be great with the canned seasoned diced tomatoes. I know that many people don't peel their tomatoes but we do.Spread your diced tomatoes on a baking sheet, salt and let sit for several minutes. Then rinse and pat dry with a paper towel.

Note: This helpful hint was on my friend's recipe that she got from Grits and Groceries Restaurant Website

Layer 1/2 of the tomatoes topped with1/2 of the onions (some people like to sauté their onions first) and sprinkle with1/3 of the Italian Dressing Mix.Add another layer with the remainingtomatoes and onions andsprinkle that with 1/3 of the dressing mix.One of my friends likes to add extra Oregano,Basil, and other spices.

Do you have a Tomato Knife? - Slice your tomatoes using a good Tomato Knife

We did not have a Tomato Knife for a long time and then got one. Now, I don't know how we managed without it.

The Tomato Knife

Verdun tomato knife OVD-20
Verdun tomato knife OVD-20

We always peel our tomatoes but I know a lot of folks don't do that. We do use a tomato knife and it really makes a big difference. Of course, it always helps to soak your tomatoes prior to peeling. That makes it a lot easier and the peels almost slip off. The tomato knife is a must especially if you are peeling a lot of tomatoes for canning. The knife also makes slicing much, much easier and does such a wonderful job.

Now for the Icing of your Tomato Pie

Spread this topping all over the top of the pie, add salt and pepper

Ice with the mixture of grated cheese, mayonnaise and remaining dressing mix.I have found that Sharp Cheddar is betterfor cooking than Extra Sharp. The Extra Sharp seems to get grainy. My sister made it using the shredded 3 cheese pkg and said it was very good. That's a good thing about this recipe. You can be creative.

Bake your Tomato Pie at 350 degrees until Golden Brown - Cheese should be bubbly and onions cooked

Photo Above: Someone Got Into My Pie

Mine was still a little runny but still tasted great. My hubby said, "That's right tasty!"You can see a section of the done pie looks a little different. That is because I cut it before it was completely done. I just had to go ahead and eat the cut portion! Sorry about that! I guess the saying "Patience is a Virtue, is true!"

"Hi Nancy Thanks for the link to the tomato pie recipe. We have lots of tomatoes and that was a perfect recipe to use some, plus I had never tried a tomato pie. I did not have a pkg of the Italian dressing mix, so I used fresh basil, thyme and rosemary from my herb garden. I also watched the video from your link(cooking up a story) and used the caramelized onion idea to top the pie. That made it very tasty. I then just top the onions off with mozzarella. Thanks again for the link. DonnaPS we ate the entire pie except for 2 slices! Hello ohme, You have a great lens! Tomato pie seems to be coming into fashion in England, good job!I have set up a brand new lens which tells you the basic core ingredients for different cooking styles, ie, Southern, Indian, Spanish etc. I have personally chosen you as one of the contenders in a little competition Im doing. Under each list is a poll asking if you can think of recipes and dishes to create, using some of the ingredients, plus others of your own ingredients, ie meat, fish pasta etc. There are different tasks for each section, ie a Vegetarian Chinese recipe, or a Chicken Curry recipe etc.You can then put your recipe name in the voting poll further down with a link to the recipe (which might be on your lens) creating more traffic for you. Once I have received the first 10 links and recipes I will start a 15 day countdown. The top 3 voted for recipes at the end of this period will be placed as a permanent link on my Lens.I have posted the first link Gordan Ramsays Chicken Curry, lets see if the public like one of your recipes more than his.I do hope you would like to participate in my little competition. The Squidoo lens is http://www.squidoo.com/essential-kitchen-food-ingr...

I've only had tomato pie once in my life and I loved it. I had it at a restaurant called Our House (now closed) in my hometown of Selma, Alabama. Alas, I didn't even know a tomato pie existed - so it's going to be a first for me - looks delicious - as do many of your other recipes. I use so many tomatoes recipes - it would be a bit lengthy. A simple one is my tomato soup - not creamed et al - simple and wholesome. Try layering parboiled potato slices, large, fresh mushroom slices and tomato slices. Use an egg and cheese mixture poured over the top and bake moderately - always a winner! Definitely, I'm endorsing this lens as a favourite to return to - I love the abundance of recipes and info - thanks for sharing!

I've never had tomato pie, but I can see that it would be hard to go wrong with these ingredients. Yours looks gorgeous and I'm just going to have to try it! As for my favorite recipe with fresh tomatoes, I haven't done this in a long time, but I used to grill stuffed tomatoes and zucchini on the outside grill. I'd use the inside of the tomatoes, leaving the "shell" intact, and the same with the zucchini (sliced lengthwise), combine those with some seasoned breadcrumbs, diced onion, and parmesan cheese, then stuff the mixture back into both the tomato shells and the zucchini shells. Grill until done. Summer comfort food! (Oh, and thank you, OhMe, for mentioning my name about the recipe on an apron. Isn't that a fun idea? Glad you liked it!)

This looks delicious. I've actually had an apple pie recipe that used green tomatoes instead of apples. It was really good! I had my doubts. This one looks really good - a lot of vegetables that I eat all the time anyway.

Tomato Pie sounds really good! Wonder if I could substitute something else for the onions? My tummy doesn't tolerate onions very well. Mmmm, I'll have to think about that. Great lens, Nancy!

I love all things tomato (except Ketchup - I only "like" it on certain things), but I think I would truly enjoy tomato pie! I'll have to try it, then experiment with adding extra ingredients. I wonder how it would be with some of my favorite pizza toppings added to it...

That hint/tip about getting some of the water out of the tomatoes will help me. I've made tomato pie a couple of times and loved it. I had to add a meat to it so hubby would think it was a "meal". So of course I added shrimp! I'm so glad to read this because I had forgotten how good it was and it's been way too long since I've made Tomato Pie.

I have always liked growing flowers more than vegetables because veggies are ready to pick right at vacation time, and they are a lot of trouble to can or freeze. Flowers just look pretty, and you don't have to do anything but enjoy their beauty. However, I do love it when some wonderful friend shares their home grown veggies with me, and once I canned about 4 quarts of tomatoes and they made the best vegetable soup that I have ever eaten. I do try to get fresh local vegetables and fruit at the Farmer's Market in Pendleton and Anderson and at Denver Downs and Kathy's. My most favorite thing to preserve is blueberries. I pick them at Happy Berry Farm and then put them on a tray and freeze them and then put them in plastic bags to have on oatmeal all winter long....I will try your tomato pie. Thanks!
