Healthy Snack Ideas for Adults and Kids

Snacks are a great way to keep up your energy between meals, especially if you are a very active person, or work a physically demanding job. And did you know that it's actually healthier to eat 5 or 6 mini-meals a day instead of having 3 huge meals? It can be an excellent way to help lose weight. On this site you will find my Top 10 healthy snacks so you will have lots of new healthy snack ideas for taking to work or school, or just when you're out on the go. Plus, there are lots of kid-friendly snack ideas as well that are sure to make your whole family happy and energetic.

Fruit, the perfect choice for a healthy snack idea

You can't get much healthier than fruit. They are delicious, low in calories, provide satisfaction for your sweet tooth and are filled with vitamins and fiber.

My favorites for a quick snack on the road are apples, bananas, grapes and mandarin oranges. They require no preparation at home, are delicious and give you a quick burst of energy when you need it. My favorite time to have a piece of fruit is when I'm heading between classes (I'm a university lecturer) on a very busy day, or before I stop at the gym on the way home from work. I'd never make it through my workout without a snack!

Ants on a log: a healthy delicious snack

Do you remember when you were a kid, how healthy and delicious ants on a log were? I know I loved it when my Mom made this for a treat when I came home from school. There's no reason not to enjoy them as adults too!

Simple, fast and easy. Spread some peanut butter on celery and add a few raisins. Will give you a good boost of energy as peanut butter contains some protein.

Hummus and Carrot/Celery Sticks

Hummus is a very healthy snack. It's low-calorie (especially if you make it at home and control the oil) and eat it with veggie sticks instead of chips. Try carrot, celery or cucumber slices.

Here's my delicious hummus recipe:

Combine:

Cooked chickpeas (canned or boiled), Tahini paste, lemon juice, garlic, salt, olive oil and cumin in a blender. Add a bit of water if necessary to blend. Adjust to taste! Enjoy. You can keep it in the fridge for up to 3 or 4 days.

Nuts: packed with nutrients

Nuts are a protein, nutrient filled snack. Just grab a small handful for a quick burst of energy. Be careful to not eat too many though. They have condensed calories and fat. My favorites are almonds and walnuts

Yogurt: it's so simple anda convenient to make your own

It's quick, easy, filled with calcium and protein. When you're at the store, make sure you look for the ones that are low in fat and sugar. Try the natural ones. Or even better yet, make your own. It's very easy to do if you buy a yogurt machine.

They are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. Delicious and low in calories as well.

Granola Bars: a convenient snack

Eaten in moderation, granola bars can be quite healthy. They contain nuts, whole grains and dried fruit. Of course, you should stay away from the most dessert type ones with lots of chocolate and peanut butter and marshmallows. It's important to compare the nutritional information when you're at the grocery store shopping for them. Look for low calories, sugar and fat.

Air Popped Popcorn

Perfect for when you're craving something salty. Forget the microwave stuff that filled with chemicals and too many calories but instead pop your own at home. Spritz some oil on it instead of using butter. Then, just add salt, or buy one of those popcorn flavor makers. It's low in calories, filled with fiber and delicious.

Hard boiled eggs

You can boil eggs and keep them in your fridge for a fast, easy snack. Just peel them, add a bit of salt and pepper. It's under 100 calories and is filled with lots of vitamins and protein to keep you going.

Tuna and crackers

It's very easy to have a healthy snack on the go if you buy the tuna, packed in water in the foil packets. It's perfect for a single size serving. Put it on some crackers and you'll be full for a couple hours. It's healthy, packed with protein and delicious.

      Good suggestions! My favorite healthy snack is a bowl of cereal, with some walnuts or cashews and a few mini chocolate chips.

      Good lens!! A lot of your suggestions are things we have very often. You are right about taking care with granola bars though. I haven't found many over here in UK that are 'healthy' without lots of sugar, or even worse, artificial sugar! I like 9 bars though- don't know if you have them in US?

      Getting into a health kick ( I found out i am the weight of my mom when she entered highschool and i am not even in highschool yet) I love Granola bars and ants on a log is a good idea , I might try it! ;)
