USA Seafood - Fish, Shellfish and Other American Products
This page has information about USA seafood. American seafood includes a multitude of saltwater and freshwater fish, crabs, shrimp, prawns, lobsters, mussels, clams, scallops, oysters, squid and other products. Americans consumed 4.5 billion pounds of seafood in 2012, according to NOAA Fisheries.
According to the National Fisheries Institute, Americans eat more than a billion pounds of shrimp each year, making it the most popular type of seafood in the United States. Consumption has been rising an average of 33 million pounds a year, every year, since 1980. Shrimp can be sautÃ©ed, grilled, boiled, fried or steamed. Shrimp are popular in dishes such as soups, chowders, gumbo, jambalaya, casseroles and salads.
New England Seafood
The region known as New England includes the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. New England is world famous for its abundant fresh seafood. Visitors from around the world visit New England to enjoy local fish and other seafood.
Mid Atlantic Seafood
The mid-Atlantic region of the USA is usually defined as the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. Seafood of the region includes quahog clams, ocean clams, surf clams, soft shell clams, scallops, lobsters, blue crabs, shrimp and other shellfish. Saltwater fish include groundfish such as cod, haddock, pollock, hake, whiting, bluefish, flounder, monkfish, scup and others.
Status of U.S. Fisheries
NOAA has released the 2009 Status of U.S. Fisheries, the annual report on the nation's fish stocks. According to the report, 85 percent of stocks were not subject to overfishing, compared to 84 percent in 2008. “Overfishing” occurs when the catch is above the target set in the fishery’s management plan.
Roughly 77 percent of stocks were not overfished. The term “overfished” relates to populations levels which ensure the stock is able to recover.
Four stocks were classified as rebuilt in 2009, including Atlantic swordfish, Atlantic scup, Atlantic black sea bass and St. Matthew’s Island, Alaska, blue king crab.
Atlantic scup, Gulf of Maine thorny skate and Gulf of Mexico pink shrimp were removed from the 2009 overfishing list. No stocks were added to the overfishing list in 2009. Canary rockfish, petrale sole and two stocks of coho salmon were added to the overfished list.
