Where to Buy Wheatgrass - Just What is Wheatgrass and is Purchasing Wheatgrass Right For You?

Updated on June 21, 2011

What is Wheatgrass?

The all natural health benefits of wheatgrass were discovered in the 1930s by Charles Schnabel.  Schnabel, an agricultural chemist, was looking for a plant to nurse his dying hens.  Not only did the hens survive after being fed the wheatgrass, they prospered!  These hens, previously on the brink of death, were producing more eggs than his other hens.  Schnabel fed his other hens wheatgrass, and they too doubled their egg laying.  Schnabel then began feeding his family wheatgrass and the rest is history.

Wheatgrass is the young grass of your average wheat plant.  Turns out that the grass stage of wheat is when the plant is at it's highest nutritional value!  Wheatgrass provides chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, and enzymes - all essential nutrients for a healthy you!

Benefits of a Diet Rich in Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass comes in several forms, as a powder and in wheatgrass juice. A diet rich in either of these forms of wheatgrass is very healthy, as wheatgrass is a source of all natural chlorophyll. Do you know how mom always told you to eat your green leafy vegetables? Well that was a simple way of saying that you need to consume more chlorophyll - the green, energy producing molecule in the plant. The dietary benefits alone are the main reason to purchase wheatgrass, but check out these other health benefits that proponents of whatgrass claim buying wheatgrass provides!

Why You Should Buy Wheatgrass

  • improve the digestive system
  • prevent diabetes
  • prevent heart disease
  • promote general well-being

Where to Purchase Wheatgrass

Buying Wheatgrass Juice

Decided on buying some wheatgrass or wheatgrass juice to try out?  Well it might be available right down the road at your local supermarket!  Wheatgrass juice that is.  Wheatgrass juice is available for purchase at certain grocerystore, such as Whole Foods, and at just about every health food store.

Buying Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass itself is harder to come by, on the other hand.  Most people grow it themselves, buy wheatgrass from an online retailer, or head to their local herb store.

One of the vendors at our Farmer's Market grows wheat grass and sells it. They not only sell it to customers for their own consumption, but also for the customers' pets. Dogs and cats who are housebound and don't get outside much need a healthy source of greens once in a while too.
