World Cup Cupcake Ideas

There are lots of ways you can make cool cupcakes for the World Cup, ranging from easy to hard, so don't worry if you're a baking beginner. My four favourite ways to make such cupcakes are:

* Bake a batch of plain, chocolate or lemon cupcakes and top them with fondant or frosting, before adding football-themed rice paper toppers (Easy)

* Bake a batch of plain, chocolate or lemon cupcakes and top them with fondant or frosting, before adding a non-edible football or trophy toy to decorate (Easy)

* Bake a batch of cupcakes (your choice) and top them with fondant or frosting, then make a fondant football or World Cup trophy to go on top (Medium)

* Bake a batch of cupcakes in your fella's favourite flavours, top them with a yummy frosting and/or fill them with a melted or ice-cream centre, and top with anything from a World Cup trophy to a mini football pitch with goal posts and ball! (Hard)

World Cup Cupcake Recipes

First, Bake your Cake!

For basic World Cup cupcakes that you are going to top with fondant or frosting, you can't go wrong with plain or chocolate sponge cakes. Here's how I make mine:

Plain Cupcakes

4 1/2 oz self-raising flour

4 1/2 oz caster sugar

4 1/2 oz butter

2 medium eggs

2 tablespoons milk

Line a 12 hole muffin/cupcake tray with paper cases. Pre-heat the oven to 190 degrees C (375 F, Gas Mark 5).

Put the butter in a mixing bowl, then slowly add the sugar, beating as you go. Adding the sugar little by little gives you a lighter sponge. Once fluffy, add the remaining ingredients and beat until the mixture is smooth.

Add some of your mixture to each case (I use an ice-cream scoop, with a teaspoon for scraping off!)

Bake the cupcakes for around 15 minutes, or until the centres are firm and springy to the touch. Stand for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

Remember, cupcakes need to be COMPLETELY cool before you add any frosting to the top!

Chocolate Cupcakes

To make chocolate cupcakes, simply make as above, substituting 1oz of the flour for 3 level tablespoons of cocoa powder (i.e. 3 1/2 oz flour and 3 tablespoons cocoa powder).

Make as above, but sift the flour and cocoa into the bowl when you add all the additional ingredients.

Get Creative with your World Cup-Cakes!

The easiest way to get that football feeling with your cupcakes straight away is to use football-themed paper cases. I used cases very similar to these brilliant soccer cupcake cases by Wilton to make my World Cup fondant sponges.

If you want to create something a bit more spectacular with your footie cakes, then try some of the recipes below. You go opt for a flavour you know your "team" will love, or you could play with soccer ideas, such as having a round ball cupcake with a crunchy centre, or a satisfying "GOOOAAAAL!" cupcake with melting centre!

Alternatively, you could make cupcakes themed around each of the World Cup countries. Use flag rice paper toppers (here are the ones I used),

and choose coordinating frosting or fondant colours. You could even theme each cupcake flavour to the country, such as American fudge brownie, Mexican chili chocolate or Italian ice-cream centres for Italy!

Cupcake Recipe Suggestions

Dark Chocolate Chili Cupcakes

Guys love football, and guys love hot food (curry anyone?), so why not combine the two by making these chocolate chili cupcakes and topping with a spicy edible football or World Cup trophy covered in cinnamon sprinkles?

Beer Cupcakes

If there's one thing guys love more than football it's probably beer, so this recipe is perfect! It's actually made with Guinness rather than beer but tastes divine. Top with a trophy or an England flag and you'll have him eating out of your hand!

Ice-Cream Cupcakes

Oh yum! These will be wolfed down by old and young footie fans alike. There are all kinds of ice-cream cupcakes, from cupcakes in ice-cream cones to cupcakes with ice-cream centres, but I've opted to link to these ones because they're fun, they look delicious and you can make them simply by using up leftovers from your freezer! Top with chocolate footballs and voila!

Whiskey and Beer - Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

The score doesn't always go the way he wants, so such times may call for an emergency cupcake to drown those sorrows. An Irish car bomb is basically a shot glass of Baileys Irish Cream and Jamesons Irish Whiskey dropped into a 3/4 full glass of Guinness, which must be downed pronto before this, er, interesting mix starts to curdle. Ask for one in an Irish bar and you'll either get a smile and a drink or a black eye... think about it! This is the slightly safer cupcake version.

How to Decorate your World Cup Cupcakes

Football Frostings, Toppings and Fondants!

There are endless ways to decorate your World Cup cupcakes - here are some of my favourites.

The easiest way to get World Cup-cakes is with edible toppers. You can buy football-themed rice papers on eBay (either in sheets or individually pre-cut), with designs ranging from footballs and shirts to flags and trophies. or you can get sugarettes and cake toppers from either eBay or Amazon, or cake specialists. You can also print your own designs if you have a printer that will accept edible inks and papers.

For my World Cup fondant sponge cupcakes, I used football-themed rice paper toppers. You can get similar designs such as these:

Football Sugarettes

You can pop rice papers on top of fondant, frosting or buttercream. Some will probably need a bit of icing to act as glue. For a simple fondant topping, simply roll out some fondant/sugarpaste in your preferred choice of colour and use a cookie cutter to cut a circle or square shape large enough to top the cupcake.

Alternatively, make a delicious topping such as buttercream, chocolate ganache, cream cheese frosting or any other number of yummy toppings, and use a piping tube to pipe the frosting on to the cupcake. Use different nozzles to achieve different effects. You could even pop a chocolate football on top of that gorgeous frosting peak to act as the cherry on top!

The more adventurous might like to try making football-themed toppings out of fondant or modelling chocolate. Either buy fondant that is suitable for modelling or make your own, but be aware that you will need to add either CMC or gum tragacanth to your sugarpaste recipe in order for it to be the right consistency for modelling.

Collection of 22 Colours x 100g Professional Luxury Icing Ready To Use Icing Sugarpaste

For basic toppings and shapes, I used a set of pre-coloured sugarpaste like this (it's easier than trying to colour your own!):

You can create shapes such as the World Cup trophy or a football, concoct an entire footie pitch or goalposts, a football shirt, or a whole creative topping such as a football patterned frosting or grass.

Want some ideas? Here we go!

World Cup Trophy Cupcakes

Top a cupcake with a miniature replica of the World Cup trophy! You can either make one yourself out of fondant, or use a small decoration. Here I used a World Cup keyring by simply removing the key chain. You could make a batch of cupcakes with little fondant shaped trophies and have one central cupcake with the big shiny replica trophy in the middle - very effective!

You can also create cool cupcakes with rice paper toppers. These World Cup trophy circles came from eBay and look great teamed with other football-themed toppers such as balls, flags and shirts.

Coordinate your topper with a complementary fondant colour. Gold or orange for the trophy, or green for the pitch, black and white for the ball, or white with red stripes for the England flag!

Football and Flag Cupcakes

These amazing cupcakes use the pattern of a football to create the entire topping of the cupcake, and it looks extremely effective!

Rather than using rice papers, you can create your own flags with fondant, such as these England flags in the foreground of this picture. Stack them up for effect, or create different stacks for different teams, or one of each flag!

Football on the Pitch Cupcakes

Get some pitch action on your cupcakes by creating a grass base, and putting footie inspired things on top - think balls, boots, goalposts and even tiny players! These cupcakes look great with a simple ball and pair of football boots on top of the "grass".

Pipe your icing in ragged swirls to get more of a grass effect, like the marshmallow frosting on top of these brilliant cupcakes. Simply topping with a fondant football is just right, as the cupcake stands out and most certainly has the wow factor.
