There was much noise from the left when the Bush administration founded the Department of Homeland Security and a lot of concern about "the government" infringing upon free thought ...
Now the left is in power and that massive DHS superweapon is focusing it's guns on "the enemies of the state" on the right ... will they keep silent?

Ralph Deeds and I had a very interesting similar discussion ... I noticed that the ACLU defended muslims and anti-war groups from these "fusion centers" but now that the "fusion powered" guns are facing right will the defenders of the first amendment, free speech and free thought, actually defend?
Is the idea of free speech precious enough for reasonable people on the left who are pro-abortion and pro-gun control to join and defend the civil rights of those with whom they disagree?
It will be interesting to see, won't it?
I think you said you are a member .... so you seem to have inside info. Maybe I should have titled the post "should" the ACLU ... If/when they do, it will also be interesting to see what kind of fire they draw from the left.
Although I'm a member, I don't have any "inside information." Anybody who sends them a check for $25 can call themself a member. Here's a link where the ACLU defended a preacher[''s right to protest abortion in a parade in Akron, Ohio.--

Here's a case where the ACLU defended the rights of abortion protesters--

As I'm sure you know the First Amendment doesn't protect the right to "cry fire in a crowded theater." Likewise I suspect the ACLU would not be likely to side with speech advocating violence against people who perform or have abortions and as I mentioned above would not support the right to physically block the entrance of a clinic. I doubt that verbal threats in person, over the phone or through the mail would be protected by the First Amendment.
Thank you again Ralph, I'm not even sure I would have defended some of that preeacher in Cleveland's rights.
Thanks. Maybe BDazzler will join! She should. Up to now she's a free rider.
Did you find anything from 2001 to today? Some groups can changes over time according to who is currently in charge and who is currently involved. I haven't heard anything friendly toward the "right" from the ACLU in this new century...but I haven't gone looking either.
I found plenty and I didn't even look that hard.
They even defended Cheech Limbaugh not more than a few years ago.
"Is the idea of free speech precious enough for reasonable people on the left who are pro-abortion and pro-gun control to join and defend the civil rights of those with whom they disagree?"
Are not we all suppose to do what's right? If one is right then mustn't everybody else be wrong, and should this wrongness be protected?
Maybe right is wrong.
So, you agree that people who thihnk like me should be put in prison camps ... because I think abortion is wrong and that both the Republicans and the Democrats are corrupt?
You get to decide what's right? Or Obama? And everyone else has to shut up or go to jail?
I think you are over-estimating the difference between "right" and "left" - seriously - they have a saying here in France:
If elections made any difference - they would not be held.

It seems to me, the ACLU is missing in action...They claim to be the defender of freedom and individual rights and work against abuses of power by our government...sounds good until you examine just what they do.They target religious institutions and defend criminals...

Do you think that the ACLU would Defend the Neo-Nazis today? In 1978 The ACLU defended a neo-Nazi group right to march in a mostly Jewish (including several holocaust survivors) suburb of Chicago called Skokie. Freedom of speech also includes speech we as a nation hate. Now people do whatever they...

Well I was just reading this off Yahoo a minute ago, and it seems a guy chooses to exercise his free speech rights in a rather colorful way. According to this guy's story, his ex-girlfriend gets an abortion, so he decides to invest money in a billboard condemning her decision. Of...

Republicans feign outrage over Biden's recent comments? It's enough to make you dizzy, isn't it? Here we have evidence of Republicans routinely calling Democrats fascists (and communists and even pedophiles etc.) yet they are, once again having a hissy fit over Biden using the same word to describe...
