Will Muslims in Egypt Destroy Antiquities?

Interesting that the police force just disappeared.

It's not just criminals who loot and destroy antiquities.  The Koran teaches Muslims to destroy religious objects and sites that predate Islam.  Muslims have destroyed religious antiquities in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan and Indonesia.

What would Egypt have without western investors or tourism?

The British were pretty good at looting antiquities and I don't think we had many Muslims amongst the ranks.

Don't be daft, at least those looted by Europeans are treasured and preserved and studied.

So they like to tell you.
Read about the damage done to the Elgin Marbles by so called restoration.

Do you see a difference between the exception and the rule?  Does one pebble ruin a whole barrel of rice?

But here's a little example for you.  One out of reams of examples.

Occupying western armies used Egyptian monuments for artillery practice.

Yes, yes, Westerners are evil and Muslims are little angels.

Dude, that's not what they're saying at all. They're just pointing out that the opposite statement "Muslims are evil and Westerners are little angels" - which you appear to believe without question - is equally untrue. Humans are humans. There are good humans, bad humans, and humans who are somewhere in between.

Religious fanatics do tend more towards the bad end of the scale, but that's nothing new. tongue Countless pagan antiquities were destroyed at the behest of Bishop Theophilus in 391 AD, possibly including part of the Great Library of Alexandria, which almost 2000 years later remains one of history's greatest tragedies.

As for the situation in Egypt, it's likely that the antiquities are under more threat from greed than religion at present, and the Egyptian people themselves have risen up in defense of their national treasures. After looters broke into the Egyptian Museum in the first days of the demonstrations, Egyptian citizens made a human chain around the building to prevent others getting through.

Of course this tidbit won't be of interest to an islamophobe.

"On May 10th, a middle-aged man carried a can of gasoline and a pipe bomb into the Jacksonville Islamic Center of Northeast Florida during evening prayers and detonated it.

Fortunately, there were no injuries to people, though the bomb did damage property. The surveillance video above gives a fairly decent picture of this man, who is clearly white, middle-aged, and on a mission.

The local news is all over it, of course. WOKV.com reports the FBI investigating it as a hate crime and possible domestic terrorism.

"It was a dangerous device, and had anybody been around it they could have been seriously injured or killed," says Special Agent James Casey. "We want to sort of emphasize the seriousness of the thing and not let people believe that this was just a match and a little bit of gasoline that was spread around."

Casey says surveillance video from the Islamic Center shows the arsonist carrying gasoline and the pipe bomb. When the explosive went off, parts of it were found 100 feet away on 9A. So, a mosque is bombed by a white guy and the bomb isn't exactly small, but the national media sees no value in reporting it? Really? And yet, that is evidently the case."
