"God Fearing" and that is a good thing?

   It has always struck me as odd that "God fearing" is considered a good thing. I was raised Christian. It is my understanding from my studies and conversations with others that God is all about love and forgiveness. Yet here we are with so many people saying that you should fear God. It strikes me as counter intuitive to fear that which will bring you salvation and love.
   
   I guess this question gets to be aimed at the Christians: What are your thoughts about "God fearing"? Is this an error in judgement or warranted indoctrination?

      Often, I hear the term, "fear" as being interpreted as "awe, reverence, hallowed, exalted and profound respect" when it refers to gods. In that respect, it is more a matter of definition rather than indoctrination.

      God fearing? Only gullible would fear something that doesn't exist to begin with.

   Yes, John said if we fear, love is not yet made complete in us. The 'fear of God' is not treating God like a monster for Job said to fear God is to hate evil. He added, wisdom is the fear of God.

         correct! I was a child when I read revellation and I didn't sleep for two days. My mind almost ran mad! This is because at then, I beleived bible had a final authority.

         and fear is not a reason to follow..?
         
         fear is a control to force you to follow. The Nuns at the school I attended when  I was  a child were masters at it!

            Me too. My mother was "educated" in a convent by nuns who were brutal.

               They were Maryinite Nuns and pushed the scare tactics and disipline to the max.  Ruler across the back of the hand, tell you to hold out your hand, stand still and do not cry, or you will get another wack.

      It sure is Jeff.
      A funny little story about abuse.
      In state school I was talking in assembly, not exactly a corporal crime, but the teacher in charge that Monday had a hangover and went berserk on me, pulling me out of line to receive "6 of the best" with a leather strap in the classroom.
      
      Being a bush kid, I was used to standing up for myself, so instead of copping it sweet, I backed up against the blackboard, grabbed the very heavy yard ruler laying on the ledge and broke it over his shoulder with all my strength behind it, then took off up the hallway, out the door and home!
      
      Mom came down to the school to bring me back, the headmaster called the teacher in, smelled his breath and told him he was fired and to leave the school right now!
      
      I have had a lot of success in my life by standing up for myself.
