The US crime rate is dropping and according to a BBC theory, Obama may well be responsible due to giving black youth a sense of belonging.

Crime has dropped almost everywhere in the world, so say statistics. And why not give Obama credit? I say give credit to anything/anyone that even remotely encourages a reduction in crime. Where's the harm in that?

Apparently that sense of belonging does not include employment since black unemployment is as high as it was during the Depression.  The BBC's theory is silly because if there is a decline in the crime rate it is probably more to do with demographic shifts.

        How come?

No, if as the previous poster, da_trif, says that the crime rate is down globally, then demographic shifts can't be part of the equation, or can it?

It is also true in Europe, although I can't speak for the rest of the world, that most crimes are proportionately carried out by black youths (there is an argument that police unfairly target black youths, but that's another argument), so has crime risen elsewhere?

Have blacks the world over been motivated by Obama? If true, then that is wonderful smile

Not even close. O-man is a crime, but thats another debate. Crime rate has been declining for many years. NoPresident has a direct effcect on crime going down. Perhaps it has to do there are less youth since the babyboomers have grown up and soon are retiring

Crime rates have been dropping pretty steadily for a number of years.  I doubt a single role model has much to do with it.

the BBC should look at Nashville, Youth Violence is not dropping, not here. Cannot speak for other places.

I'm glad to hear this. It is going to take a lot more than Obama to get the crime rate where it needs to be.

I would think these guys have a lil better grip on the reasons why than the BBC.

-"The study by the DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) was based on detailed surveys of a statistically representative sample of the population. It found an annual average of 195,000 hate crime victimizations between 2003 and 2009, with the numbers bouncing around from year to year but declining overall, from 239,400 in 2003 to 148,400 in 2009. An earlier BJS study, using the same survey methodology but examining hate crimes during the 2000-2003 period, found an average of 210,000 hate crime victimizations per year.

The decline, Northeastern University criminology professor and hate crimes expert Jack McDevitt told Hatewatch, follows a similar national decline in violent crime overall. The apparent reasons for that decline, which likely apply to hate crimes as well, include the shrinking of the national population of 16- to 24-year-olds, who are by far the most crime-prone population cohort; the rise of effective community policing strategies around the country; and the diminished use of particularly crime-associated drugs like crack cocaine and methamphetamines, he said.-

Well you know that was only one reason the BBC gave that I mentioned - if you read the link the range of reasons encompass the points you quoted too.

Certainly lesser usage of crack cocaine. Legal abortions being offered. Reduction of lead in petrol (gasoline in the US I believe). Better policing. A whole range of things.

I simply don't find the justification to give Obama the credit for any of it. It may be that some black youth now feel more empowered, but you cannot say that is the cause. Besides, a few grand a day from dealing drugs empowers you more that some dream of being the next Obama. That is tangable, dreams are not.

No not for drug dealing, although I am sure they were doing that anyway, but it is a sad fact that black youths seem to be responsible for most of the crimes carried out. But why?

Do they feel a sense of grievance against a country where their ancestors were not born free?

Do they feel having a black man in the highest power, gives them back a sense of self-belief? A new way forward. An icon, if you like, that they can aspire to?

Don't you know that anything that improves in the US while Obama is president is due to other factors but anything that gets worse is all his fault?

Apologies are needed as there is seemingly much hear say and no proof to justify such claims as this subject suggest.
Obama couldnt possibly be rewarded a medal or praise for any
thing to do with any crime rates anywhere going up or down. Its a
opinion riddled with disgust with whomever can even suggest thes
e tales be valid as true.
If anything the Crime Rates have grown to to an inexperienced
War Mongering Free Pass Agent of the United States to suppress
the Americans and to start wars in other countries and not payin
g tribrute to the USA own citizens of National Plight.
Few stories of Valor would ever fit such a Unkind Person and
lyer such as Obama whom is not kind nor generous Church going
believer in the word of God as Obama loves death too much.Obama
is deemed the axis of Evil and a National Threat to any country
    and its people.
