Has the U.S. become a nation of haters?

Never in my life have I seen such vitriol directed at our current POTUS and our former POTUS. Some people didn't like Clinton or Daddy Bush, some made fun of Ford and thought Carter was inept, and some thought Ronnie was senile, but I honestly don't remember as much pure hate directed at any of these as I've seen aimed at GWB and Obama. Even if you don't agree with the presidents' policies, shouldn't the office at least garner a little respect? Isn't it possible to disagree with them without calling them vile names and depicting them as headhunters, Nazis, monkeys, Alfed E. Newman, idiots, and non-citizens? I'm not talking about good-natured jokes here - presidents have always been the butt of those. I'm talking about pure venom. I learned a long time ago that hate will consume and destroy the hater, eventually.

This tirade was prompted by the comments I read on blogs last night, mostly directed toward Obama, with a few Bush attacks. Can't we, as Americans, do better than this?

That's a strange question to ask now, Bush was dragged through the mud a long time ago. Now its Obama's turn to be roughed up and people are concerned? He's a terrible president and deserves as much criticism as he gets. Get over it.

I thought with Bush, it was a fluke. Now that Obama is getting the same treatment, I worry that it's a trend. And since you're new here and don't know me, I'll tell you that I didn't vote for Obama. In fact, we still have McCain stickers on our auto. I disagree with a lot of Obama's policies and hope the GOP can run a candidate worthy of my vote. I'm not whining for Obama - I'm concerned about the office, in general.

A lot of people follow the leader who sets or perpetuates the standard for civility in public conversation.    Bush never, as far as I remember, publicly bad-mouthed former leaders or Obama OR the average citizen.   Obama has done all that.  And his followers have taken that inch and made it into miles and miles of hateful carp.  Conservatives, for the most part, do fight back, but not usually with the vileness of the Left;  conservatives usually fight on the issues, not against Obama as a person.

He has said we all share a "horrendous tragic history" in reference to the civil rights movement.  What he so conveniently forgets is that that issue has been straightened out and done with and he should NOT keep bringing it back up.  He apparently knows nothing about forgiveness toward others nor how to ask for it himself.  He just doesn't care. He called America "arrogant" and continues to blame us all for every ill that a few people have done.  He has mocked evangelical Christians, and actually all Christians;  mocked those who believe in the right to bear arms for our own protection; tried to sway our kids not to follow their grandparents' and parents' teachings.   He's tried to get Bush prosecuted for things that happened during his Presidency.  He's mocked average citizens who simply wanted him properly vetted.  Not to mention the stuff Michelle Obama has said that he hasn't even tried to apologize for allowing.

Being a sarcastic arrogant mocker against honest citizens isn't one of the requirements of the Oval Office, nor is it needed or desired.

I tend to write some off to the internet; it is too easy to go public while retaining anonymity.

The intense, vitriolic mud slinging campaigns don't help.  Constant media picking at picayune matters hurts.

Our entire political system has become a battle ground for companies and individuals looking for government monies and more power.  While it has always been this way to some extent the battle has intensified enormously and personal attacks are seen as one way to get what they want.

    It's a mess.

Rush is a hatemonger. I dunno if I'd go so far as to call him evil, but he certainly has a different sense of morality than most of us. He doesn't seem to have a problem with repeating misleading (or outright false) information, for example.

Hate monger-One who incites others to hatred or prejudice. Rush informs his listeners of the latest goings on politically and then gives his interpretation. It is usually punctuated with humor and satire. The left who is almost completely humorless misinterprets it and calls it hate for their benefit. Ive been listening to Rush for over twenty years and I have seen more hate in these  forums perpetrated by liberals in the last two weeks than all of the past 20 years from Rush.

It's disturbing to say the least. Last night my son posted a comment in regard to a highly opinionated article blasting the US, and one of the posters commented back saying he hoped Iran would drop a bomb on his house. Where does this hatred come from? The posters screen name is 'americansaredumb'. [not on Hubpages]
Like wilderness said, a lot of it comes from anonymity and cowardice. Would he say that face to face?

I get most of my news from PBS and a few select newspapers. I can't listen to the other stuff. The Republican National Convention is going to be in Tampa. I can only imagine the mood of the nation at that time. It makes me sad at times that politics has become the focus of many peoples lives. Everything is blamed on the President. It's not the Presidents fault that someone doesn't have a job. Look at the housing market and the banks. Who can afford to move and accept a job offer if they can't sell their house? So the job offers aren't made. Businesses can't pay for a prospective employees underwater home.

It's been this way and even worse from the very beginning, what's new is the internet and 24 hour news networks.  Jefferson and Adams attacked each other viciously, though usually through surrogates or name du plumes.  Roosevelt gave a speech during the 1936 campaign in Madison Square Garden focusing on the hatred directed at him by Republicans.  "I welcome their hatred".

Some left-wing terrorist groups stockpiled arms preparing for battle against Nixon's goons, and carried out bombings of government-related buildings during the early 70's.

    1. Jeff Berndt profile image73
Jeff Berndtposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Thanks, Ron, I was about to talk about the Jefferson-Adams campaign. They called each other all sorts of names.

And thanks for the reminder of domestic terrorism in the '70s. We haven't got any of that lately, though we have had some threats of it from the opposite end of the spectrum. (2nd amendment solution, anyone?)

I think it's also true that the rational folks on both sides get drowned out by the cranks on both sides. Someone spouting vitriol may not be representative of the folks on his side of a given issue, but boy does the vitriol make good copy. So the nastiest elements get the most attention. It's the press's fault to an extent, but it's also the fault of those of us who watch the media that give us the vitriol. If we'd turn off the cranks, and turned to the rational voices, perhaps the level of discourse might be raised.

      Just  thought.

In an interviewwith the Financial Times, Hagel blasted GOP leadership for their “irresponsible actions” during the debt ceiling debacle, noting that “I think about some of the presidents we’ve had on my side of the aisle — Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., go right through them, Eisenhower — they would be stunned.”

“Disgusted” with the debt ceiling negotiations, Hagel called it “an astounding lack of responsible leadership by many in the Republican party, and I say that as a Republican.” “Does anyone not believe what’s happened here the last couple weeks in the market was not a complete, direct result of the lack of confidence that came out of that folly, that embarrassment?” he asked.

Asked about Tea Party influence, Hagel said the Republican party is too captive to a movement that is “very ideological” and “very narrow.” “I’ve never seen so much intolerance as I’ve seen today,” he said. Later surveying the GOP 2012 field, Hagel said the party may need to rebuild, agreeing that Republicans are now “too far to the right.”

    *****

Thank you Mr Hagel. Never seen so much intolerance!

The market's been up and down depending on the news of the day.
Big jump the day we found out insurance companies aren't going to have to pay out as much for Irene as predicted.
Big drop on the day the government announced stagnant employment report* and went after BofA et al for their mortgage fraud.
Which of these is directly attributable to Obama?

*Do not tell me Obama is solely responsible for the unemployment rate. You can't have it both ways. Either the government SHOULD be involved in creating jobs or it should stay out of the free market's way.
Heck, the GOP won't even let him come talk to them about job creation when he wants to. Geez.

So your saying that if there was "A better business environment" companies would create more jobs. Why? If the rank and file Americans have no money to spend, due to inflation and job losses thanks to Wall St and the previous administrations economic policies ,there is no demand to meet. Businesses hire people to meet demand, period. They don't just hire people because there's "A good President" or business policy,Which  looks like paying no taxes and doing as they please if you listen to enough republicans.

America has a long history of criticism and animosity between political opponents. This isn't about hate at all but belief in how mankind should govern itself and what role government should play in society. We have a long history of what can go wrong when we allow too much centralization of power and when we sacrifice our personal responsibility to bureaucracy. There is no compromise between this view and that of opponents who believe government is the owner of all wealth and the agent of the people to insure its proper distribution, fairly. Consequently between those visions there will be heated debate.

There was no television network with Bush-Bashing 24/7, nor a radio blitz of Bush hate every day.

In fact, I remember being iced out when he was prez: told to shut up, called a traitor, un-American, all kinds of nasty.

      http://community.nytimes.com/comments/w … -done.html

LMC, when have I ever said that you hate America? And how can you say all Obama opposition is racist? When BO has bashed Bush, was it because Bush is white? I do agree that some of the hatred for BO is most likely PARTIALLY based on racism, but certainly not all of it is. When white liberals bash conservative Herman Cain, is it because he's black?

"When white liberals bash conservative Herman Cain, is it because he's black?" Some of them, probably. There are jackholes on both sides of the spectrum, and the further you get to the ends, the more jackholes you find.

Most Obama opposition is because of his policies. I disagree with this opposition, but respect it.

But it's undeniable that there is a significant minority of Obama-bashers that use racial slurs and xenophobic language in their bashing. Is racism why they oppose him? Who knows? It doesn't really matter. What matters is they're using racist rhetoric, which is incredibly rude.

"personally I am a conservative but would support Obama if he was doing the right things"
Well, imo he is doing (some of) the right things. He's also caved on a lot of things that he ought not to have caved on. We can talk about those things, and why we support or oppose them, without accusing each other of being racist.

Personally, I don't think it's terribly useful to talk about whether someone is a racist or not. It's unimportant and a waste of energy, since it can never be proven or disproven without being able to read the person's mind (impossible).

But that picture of Obama dressed as a witch doctor? Or the cartoon of him in the turban with the exaggerated lips? The sign calling him a "lyin' African?" That stuff sounds pretty racist to me. I don't care whether the people who made or carried those signs are actual racists or not. What I care about is that they were carrying signs with racist images on them.

There are a few possible responses to that observation. They can say,
"Oh, yeah, that's a good point. This sign makes me look like a jerk and  doesn't do my argument any favors. I should carry a different sign."
            This would be my favorite.

Or they can say, "It's freedom of speech, suck it up."  or "It's just a joke."
This is code for "I know it's a racist sign, but I don't care. I'm going to carry it anyway."

Or they can say, "Huh? I don't really think this is a racist cartoon."
This could open a dialogue about what carrying such a sign makes them look like to others. Maybe they'll end up switching to a less racially-charged sign, or maybe they'll still not see a problem with it. Who knows. But it's a better response than "Can't you take a joke?"

"I assert that those who claim someone is racist when they are not are racist themselves."

Ok, he is a buffoon and he isn't my president. I wasn't really sorry just offering an olive branch, I hope democrats never get any power again. Why should we share, when we do we are blamed for all the problems democrats have caused. Accept responsibility for this entire financial collapse and then just move along.

Really? Did you know Bush senior had gay sex parties there? It was in the papers and everything.
And I'm SURE you know about the Franklin Cover-up? Oooooops, yup, lead to Bush Daddy's time in office.
Iran/Contra with Reagan? Not as bad as Monica's spit?
      October Surprise?

You know, it's beginning to look like you far righty's REALLY have a problem with sex...while everything else seems to be OK, no matter the criminality.

Respect for the oval office went out with Rush Limbaugh.

    "Waging War on Obama

The Koch brothers are not run-of-the-mill political opponents. An investigative report last year by the New Yorker magazine on the secretive and deep-pocketed pair have shown them to be "waging a war against Obama."  They have bankrolled the Tea Party movement, climate change skepticism and right-wing think tanks, such as the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the Competitive Enterprise Institute and the National Center for Policy Analysis."
